Kohlschreiber Carries German Hopes Into Quarters GERMAN TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS 2016: DAY 5 MEDIA NOTES Friday, July 15, 2016 Rothenbaum Tennis Arena, Hamburg, Germany | July 11-17, 2016 Draw: S-32, D-16 | Prize Money: €1,388,830 | Surface: Clay ATP World Tour Info Tournament Info ATP PR & Marketing www.ATPWorldTour.com www.German-Open-Hamburg.de Martin Dagahs: [email protected] Twitter: @ATPWorldTour Twitter: @Am_Rothenbaum Fabienne Benoit: [email protected] Facebook: @ATPWorldTour Facebook: @TennisAmRothenbaum Press Room: +49 40 524724141 KOHLSCHREIBER CARRIES GERMAN HOPES INTO QUARTERS DAY 5 PREVIEW: Four seeds remain in contention for the German Tennis Championships title – and all four could advance or be eliminated on quarter-final Friday in Hamburg. Up first on Centre Court is a repeat of the 2009 semi-final, as No. 3 seed Pablo Cuevas takes on France’s Paul- Henri Mathieu, who came out on top against here seven years ago before losing to Russia’s Nikolay Davydenko in the final. Cuevas gained revenge a year later in Bastad, but this is the Uruguayan’s first meeting with Mathieu in almost six years. Up next on Centre Court, No. 8 seed Guillermo Garcia-Lopez faces Stephane Robert for the second time this season, some 14 years removed from their first encounter on the Futures circuit in Gran Canaria, Spain. Back then, a 19-year-old Garcia-Lopez lost to Robert, then 22, who in turn lost in the quarter-finals to eventual champion Rafael Nadal, aged 16. Stuttgart champion Philipp Kohlschreiber faces a new opponent but the same flag in the shape of Renzo Olivo – the third Argentine the No. 1 seed has taken on at Am Rothenbaum in succession after beating Carlos Berlocq and Nicolas Kicker to reach the last eight. Should both Kohlschreiber and Cuevas win, the German will have been confronted with a decidedly South American route to his first Hamburg final, while the bottom half of the draw features four European quarter-finalists. Closing out the day’s singles action, No. 7 seed Martin Klizan returns after his 51-minute second- round victory over Germany’s 17-year-old wild card Louis Wessels to face Daniel Gimeno-Traver, who spent far longer on court to edge past qualifier Daniil Medvedev. The Spaniard might have ended the three-hour, eight-minute match a little sooner, had he converted one of two match points on Medvedev’s serve at 5-3 in the third set, only to fail to serve out the match in the next game, finally securing the win in a third-set tie-break. • Game, Set, Watched: Governance, Social Control and Surveillance in Professional Tennis
GAME, SET, WATCHED: GOVERNANCE, SOCIAL CONTROL AND SURVEILLANCE IN PROFESSIONAL TENNIS By Marie-Pier Guay A thesis submitted to the Department of Sociology in conformity with the requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts Queen’s University Kingston, Ontario, Canada November, 2013 Copyright © Marie-Pier Guay, 2013 Abstract Contrary to many major sporting leagues such as the NHL, NFL, NBA, and MLB, or the Olympic Games as a whole, the professional tennis industry has not been individually scrutinized in terms of governance, social control, and surveillance practices. This thesis presents an in-depth account of the major governing bodies of the professional tennis circuit with the aim of examining how they govern, control, constrain, and practice surveillance on tennis athletes and their bodies. Foucault’s major theoretical concepts of disciplinary power, governmentality, and bio-power are found relevant today and can be enhanced by Rose’s ethico-politics model and Haggerty and Ericson’s surveillant assemblage. However, it is also shown how Foucault, Rose, and Haggerty and Ericson’s different accounts of “modes of governing” perpetuate sociological predicaments of professional tennis players within late capitalism. These modes of surveillance are founded on a meritocracy based on the ATP and WTA rankings systems. A player’s ranking affects how he or she is governed, surveilled, controlled, and even punished. Despite ostensibly promoting tennis athletes’ health protection and wellbeing, the systems of surveillance, governance, and control rely on a biased and capitalistically-driven meritocracy that actually jeopardizes athletes’ health and contributes to social class divisions, socio- economic inequalities, gender discrimination, and media pressure.
