Marquis Theatre 1535 Broadway at 46th Street (877‐250‐2929), www.wonderlandonbroadway.com By Scott Harrah Have your kids been behaving badly? Punish them by taking them to this mind‐numbing mess of a Broadway musical. The White Rabbit has laid one big, stinking rotten egg of a show just in time for Easter, loosely based on Lewis Carroll’s classic children’s book, Alice in Wonderland. It is a shame indeed because so much could be done to make an imaginative, innovative musical adaptation of this timeless kid's story, but book writers Gregory Boyd and Jack Murphy and Broadway veteran composer Frank Wildhorn (of Jekyll & Hyde fame) fail on so many levels. The result is an excruciatingly painful, cringe‐inducing show that makes one’s jaw drop in stultifying amazement by how ill conceived the story is from beginning to end. We know we are in trouble in the show’s opener when grown‐up Alice (Janet Dacal, last seen on Broadway's In The Heights) appears on stage sporting dark leggings, a smock top with 1980s‐ style cinch belt and boots, and a frizzy hairstyle that makes her resemble pop‐rocker Pat Benatar in her MTV heyday. There is no doubt that Ms. Dacal is a gifted actor and great singer, but the material she is given with here wastes her talents.

The story written in 1868 relates a fictionalized account of its author’s young life with her sisters. While certain aspects of the story have been altered in this musical adaptation, the heart of the tale remains untouched. Four sisters of the March family: Jo, Meg, Beth and Amy come of age during the U.S. Civil War, while their father is away with the Union Army. Their mother, whom they affectionately call “Marmee,” nurtures and encourages these four strong-spirited young women to achieve their dreams. While this approach to raising children may be “conventional,” there is little “conventional” about her daughters. Jo, a tom-boyish writer, disregards social standards of how women should behave.

For the purposes of this document, I will make use of the established term low male voice (LMV) while acknowledging that there is a push for the removal of gender from voice classification in the industry out of respect for our trans, non-binary and gender fluid populations. In addition to analysis and summation of musical concepts and content found within each selection, each repertoire selection will include discussions of style, vocal technique, vocalism, and character in an effort to establish routes towards authenticity in the field of musical theatre over the last twenty five years. The explosion of online streaming and online sheet music resources over the last decade enable analysis involving original cast recordings, specific noteworthy performances, and discussions on transposition as it relates to the honoring of character and capability of an individual singer. My experiences with challenges as a young low voice (waiting for upper notes to develop, struggling with resonance strategies above a D♭4) with significant musicianship prowess left me searching for a musically challenging outlet outside of the Bel Canto aesthetic.

Wagner also appeared in over 1,200 performances in the role as the Beast. He also met with the THS theatre students and talked about his experiences while performing in Beauty and the Beast and other Broadway productions such as Into the Woods, Les Miserables, Three Musketeers, and Jekyll & Hyde. He also provided tips to calm stage fright, and encouraged the students to have the courage to pursue their goals in life. Tomball High School STAGE will perform Beauty and the Beast on Nov. 10-12 and Nov. 14 at 7 p.m. and Nov. 12 at 2:30 p.m. Beauty and the Beast tickets are $10 online in advance, $12.50 at the box office in advance, and $15 on the day of the show. Children 12 and under and Senior Citizens can purchase tickets for $6 for the Saturday matinee performance of Beauty and the Beast.
