The design team wants to make sure the NW area will be cohesive with the opposite side of the street and act as a kind of signature or “gateway” element. The east side triangle design should be completed by Fall 2014. 3.1.1 CRBA shared that a Bike Share Toronto station is being proposed for the east side. It was noted that the east side triangle is a very large CRBA/ open/park area in which a stand would take up only a minute portion INFO and be an absolutely logical location. • Development Planning Application for 373 Front Street East and 90 Mill
TE19.5.9 LANA MCINNIS & JÖRG BOLLMANN 912-80 Mill Street Toronto, Ontario, Canada M5A 4T3 October 14th, 2020 TO: CITY OF TORONTO CITY CLERK C/O Toronto-East York Community Council Ellen Devlin, Secretariat 2nd floor, West Tower, City Hall 100 Queen St. W. Toronto, ON M5H 2N2 Re: Development Planning application for 373 Front Street East and 90 Mill Street Planning Application Number: 19 228307 STE 13 OZ; Oct 15th 2020 Community Council Meeting item TE19.5 Delivered by Email ([email protected]) Dear Secretariat, Toronto-East York Community Council, We have been residents of the Distillery District since 2007. We made the conscience decision to move into this area as we were inspired by the City’s vision for the neighbourhood outlined in the City-endorsed West Don Lands Block Plan 2006 (WDL Block Plan 2006) that is currently partially realized as the Pan Am Athletes’ Village. From our point of view, the proposed development at 373 Front Street East and 90 Mill Street, Planning Application Number: 19 228307 STE 13 OZ, AKA Block 3, 4, 7 of the WDL Block Plan 2006 deviates significantly in built form, set-backs, heights and density from the City-endorsed WDL Block Plan 2006 and the internationally recognized and award winning Public Realm Master Plan 2011 for the West Don Lands (West Don Lands, 2017–2018 Global Awards for Excellence Winner). These significant deviations have not only a direct negative impact on our current living quality, as our unit will be deprived of direct sunlight by the new development and exposed to increased noise levels, but also bears a high risk of long lasting negative social economic effects for the whole neighbourhood including the Distillery District and the Canary District.

  • LMDA Conference Handbook - Toronto, on - June 21-23, 2018
LMDA Conference Handbook - Toronto, ON - June 21-23, 2018 33rd Annual LMDA Conference* – TORONTO, ONTARIO Thursday, June 21 – Saturday, June 23, 2018 I’m so excited to welcome you to my hometown, Toronto – it’s not just the place Drake calls "The Six," but a city of great diversity, great growth (we’re the 4th largest city in North America) and with that, great challenges. Toronto is in the 'Dish With One Spoon Territory’ – a treaty between the Anishinaabe, Mississaugas and Haudenosaunee that bound them to share the territory and protect the land. The "Dish” represents what is now southern Ontario, from the Great Lakes to Quebec and from Lake Simcoe into the United States. We all eat out of the Dish, all of us that share this territory, with only one spoon. That means we have to share the responsibility of ensuring the dish is never empty, which includes taking care of the land and the creatures we share it with. Importantly, there are no knives at the table, representing the idea that we must keep the peace. The conference theme is “Crossing Borders” – for many of you, you’ll be crossing a border of one kind or another to attend this conference. That act inspired me to think about what other kinds of borders are people crossing in their work and their lives in order to make art. It became clear through the Call for Proposals that the theme resonated with a lot of you and the conversations at the conference will deal with all kinds of borders and the ways in which we acknowledge them or cross them.

  • How Top Canadian Architects Designed a Pan Am District from Scratch the Globe and Mail
7/13/2015 How top Canadian architects designed a Pan Am district from scratch The Globe and Mail How top Canadian architects designed a Pan Am district from scratch ALEX BOZIKOVIC The Globe and Mail Published Thursday, Jul. 09, 2015 8:42AM EDT Last updated Thursday, Jul. 09, 2015 1:17PM EDT Take a crowd of Canada’s top architects, put them in a room and ask them to design a dense city neighbourhood – working with a 1,000page book of rules and requirements. This was how the Canary District in Toronto, which will be the athletes’ village for the Pan Am/Parapan Am Games this summer, was created. Surprisingly, this citybycommittee is coming out well. The $514million, 14hectare complex is walkable, sustainable, contemporary but respectful of history, and economically diverse. It will efficiently house 10,000 people for Pan Am and then serve different users, in about 1,650 units, over the long term. If that sounds like a recipe for virtuous blandness, it is. These are seven buildings in 50 shades of grey. But the four architecture firms involved – KPMB, architectsAlliance (aA), MacLennan Jaunkalns Miller (MJM) of Toronto and Montreal’s Daoust Lestage – set out to build an ensemble. “How do you define a new district, a new community?” asks architect Renée Daoust of Daoust Lestage. “It can’t always be with a ‘wow’ building. The richer communities reflect some elements of continuity within their urban fabric. It’s a fine thread.” In this case, the thread runs along Front Street in Toronto, which has been extended east from downtown as a grand boulevard.
