All the sculptures are made out of granite and can be classified into Nagarajas and Nagayakshis except one which is a female naga devotee. This paper tries to briefly discuss the iconography, chronology and significance of the sculptures. Keywords: Exploration, Pamba River Basin, Kerala, Nagarajas, Nagayakshis, Iconography, Chronology Introduction Pamba is one of the important and third longest rivers in Kerala. It is apparently the river Baris/Bans mentioned in records of Pliny (Menon 1967-62). It originates from Pulachimalai hill in Peermade plateau at an altitude of 1650 MSL and has a length of 176km. It flows through Idukki, Pathanamthitta and Alappuzha districts and finally empties into the Vembanadu Lake. During medieval period Pamba basin harbored prosperous settlement like Kaviyur, Thiruvanmandoor, Perunnayil and Thiruvalla. Naga and yakshi images have earlier been reported from Niranam-Tiruvalla area (Mathew 2006). The present discoveries add to the list of known images. -

Researches on Poison, Garuda-birds and Naga-serpents based on the Sgrub thabs kun btus ALEX WAYMAN Tibetan literature deals with poison in a number of texts, conveniently in corporated in the Tibetan sadhana (deity evocation) collection Sgrub thabs kun btus,1 especially in Vols. Cha and Nya of the fourteen-volume set. Here the term for 'poison' (T. dug) has a range of usages and applications far ex ceeding what we could expect in Western conceptions, also far exceeding those found in Indian Buddhism itself. To differentiate the part due to the In dian heritage from what else is found in these Tibetan texts, whatever be the source, it is relevant to introduce numerical groups, namely, the three, the four, and the five kinds of poison. The threefold system does not implicate the Garuda-birds or Naga-serpents. The system of four poisons, with a fifth one added, in terms of the four or five elements, goes with both the Garuda-birds and Naga-serpents; and a secondary system of five poisons was found in a iion-faced' DakinT text. The undigested food due to vitiated agni results in apakwa-ahara-rasa, that does not get absorbed and transformed is termed as ama, is said to be root cause for diseases. Ama combines with dosha to form amadosha that acquires more shuktatva, further forming amavisha, paving to varied manifestations in diseases. Therefore, analyzing saama and niramavastha is essential for better diagnosis and management. Amlapitta, one among the annavaha-sroto-vikara manifests due to agni-vaishamya. Jihwa pareeksha (tongue examination) plays an important role to assess various changes in jihwa. It reflects the status of annavaha-srotas and ama. Thus, the present study aims at observation of manifestations on jihwa (tongue) by jihwa pareeksha in saama avastha of Amlapitta. Patients of Amlapitta were screened and subjected for jihwa pareeksha. -

Chalawadi Asst. Professor, Dept of A I History and Epigraphy Karnatak University, Dharwad The Rattas were the significant ruling dynasty, who claimed descent from the Rastrakutas. The earliest record is dated 980 A.D. It comes from the place called sogal. It is believed that sogal was their early capital, from where they shifted first to Soundatti and later on to Belgaum. Their reign continued till 1238 A.D.1 When they were thrown out of power by the seunas of Devagiri. The Rattas served under the Chalukyas of Kalyan and tried to become independent. When the Kalachuries displaced 'the Chalukyas generally the Rattas claimed authority over a large administrative division known as Kohundi or kondi 3000. This included major parts of Soundatti, Gokak, Hukkeri, Raibag, Chikkodi, Bailhongal and Mudhol, Jamakhandi talukas which fall in Belgaum and Bijapur districts. The line of descent of Rattas rulers, commences with Nanna and ends with Lakshmideva - II. In between there were eleven rulers, namely Karthavirya-I, Nanna - I, Erga, Anka, Nanna-II, Karthavirya II, Sena-II, Karthavirya-III, Lakshmideva-I, Karthavirya-IV and Mallikarjuna- II. The Rattas in the course of their rule patronaged both saivism and Jainism. By erecting temples and Basadis and giving much grants to them. One of the earliest references to Jaina patronage under the Rattas is noticed in Soundatti inscription. We are told that Karthavirya-I gave land (grants) to the Basadis constructed by Pritvirama his successors Kannakaira also gave grants to Jinalya at Soundatti. -

The thesis argues that the worshipper emulates the Tirthankara image which embodies Jain values and that these values define and, in part, dictate proper behavior. In becoming like the image, the worshipper's actions ex• press the common concerns of the Jains and follow a pattern that is prized because it is believed to be especially Jain. The basic orientation or line of thought is that culture is a system of symbols. These symbols are implicit agreements among the community's members, agreements which entail values and which permit the Jains to meaningfully interpret their experiences and guide their actions.
