These functions are called div and mod in Pascal, are called / and % in C and C++, are called / and % in Java, and are called / (or \) and mod in .NET. ASPECT RATIO Aspect Ratios Are One of the More Confusing Parts of Video
ASPECT RATIO Aspect ratios are one of the more confusing parts of video, although they used to be simple. That's because television and movie content was all about the same size, 4:3 (also known as 1.33:1, meaning that the picture is 1.33 times as long as it is high). The Academy Standard before 1952 was 1.37:1, so there was virtually no problem showing movies on TV. However, as TV began to cut into Hollywood's take at the theater, the quest was on to differentiate theater offerings in ways that could not be seen on TV. Thus, innovations such as widescreen film, Technicolor, and even 3-D were born. Widescreen film was one of the innovations that survived and has since dominated the cinema. Today, you tend to find films in one of two widescreen aspect ratios: 1. Academy Standard (or "Flat"), which has an aspect ratio of 1.85:1 2. Anamorphic Scope (or "Scope"), which has an aspect ratio of 2.35:1. Scope is also called Panavision or CinemaScope. HDTV is specified at a 16:9, or 1.78:1, aspect ratio.If your television isn't widescreen and you want to watch a widescreen film, you have a problem. The most common approach in the past has been what's called Pan and Scan. For each frame o a film, a decision is made as to what constitutes the action area. That part of the film frame is retained, and the rest is lost.. This can often leave out the best parts of a picture. -

Introduction to Uncertainties (prepared for physics 15 and 17) Average deviation. When you have repeated the same measurement several times, common sense suggests that your “best” result is the average value of the numbers. We still need to know how “good” this average value is. One measure is called the average deviation. The average deviation or “RMS deviation” of a data set is the average value of the absolute value of the differences between the individual data numbers and the average of the data set. For example if the average is 23.5cm/s, and the average deviation is 0.7cm/s, then the number can be expressed as (23.5 ± 0.7) cm/sec. Rule 0. Numerical and fractional uncertainties. The uncertainty in a quantity can be expressed in numerical or fractional forms. Thus in the above example, ± 0.7 cm/sec is a numerical uncertainty, but we could also express it as ± 2.98% , which is a fraction or %. (Remember, %’s are hundredths.) Rule 1. Addition and subtraction. If you are adding or subtracting two uncertain numbers, then the numerical uncertainty of the sum or difference is the sum of the numerical uncertainties of the two numbers. For example, if A = 3.4± .5 m and B = 6.3± .2 m, then A+B = 9.7± .7 m , and A- B = - 2.9± .7 m. Notice that the numerical uncertainty is the same in these two cases, but the fractional uncertainty is very different. Rule2. Multiplication and division. If you are multiplying or dividing two uncertain numbers, then the fractional uncertainty of the product or quotient is the sum of the fractional uncertainties of the two numbers. -

As such it doesn’t have the same structure as a “normal” film reference book. Our aim is to promote the free exchange of ideas among fellow professionals, the cinematographer, their camera crew, manufacturer's, rental houses and related businesses. DIGITAL BROADCASTING Predicting the future of broadcasting P.A. Laven EBU Technical Director Will broadcasting be supplanted by the Internet? Will “convergence” lead to a single delivery system for multimedia services? Which broadcast delivery systems (terrestrial, satellite or cable) will become dominant for digital TV? Will the reduction in costs of computer hardware affect broadcasting? Will computers merge with TV sets? This article attempts to answer such questions, both by looking “sideways” at the world of computers and the Internet and by analyzing some technological trends. 1.
