  • Keith Hill on Keith Hill
June 1, 2015, Issue 450 Addressing SaladGate Six pages of in-depth reporting on Women In Country and a post-CRS panel write-up in which Keith Hill urged slashing female- voiced songs made nary a ripple outside the business a few months back. But the consultant’s lettuce-and-tomatoes analogy last week in this space touched off a social and, eventually, major media tidal wave. Go figure. We’ll get to Hill in the next story (right), after female PDs and MDs weigh in with their thoughts on a well-known though still confounding reality. In full disclosure, some of the women we contacted declined to contribute for lack of time or lack of what they felt would be helpful feedback. Some passed because they weren’t comfortable publicly commenting in a “no-win argument.” And some came to us asking to be part of the conversation. Lost In Translation: “I don’t think he phrased what he was trying to say especially well,” says Scripps/ Spark Plug: Big Spark/Star Farm’s Olivia Lane hosts industry Tulsa OM and KVOO PD Jules Riley, whose pros at Handlebar J in Phoenix over the weekend. • Issue 469 Motor Mouths: Country in Detroit “Detroit: Cars and Rock ‘N’ Roll
October 12, 2015, Issue 469 Motor Mouths: Country In Detroit “Detroit: Cars and Rock ‘n’ Roll. Not a bad combo.” Nice, Kid Rock. But what are either without radio? Motor City call letters including WCSX, WRIF, WOMC, WKQI, WJR, WWWW and WYCD have become famous over the years with help from Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Steve Kostan and Arthur Penhallow, National Radio Hall of Famers Dick Purtan, J.P. McCarthy, Steve Dahl and Howard Stern, and Country Radio Hall of Famer Dr. Don Carpenter, to name a few. Not a bad pedigree. PPM market No. 12 is changing, though, especially with respect to Country. For starters, CBS Radio’s WYCD got its first direct challenger in four years when Cumulus Adult Hits WDRQ adopted the company’s Nash brand in late 2013 (Breaking News 12/13/13). And just a few weeks ago Carpenter ended his 10- year WYCD morning run, which led to other on-air changes at the station (CAT 8/5). Country Aircheck details some of those and checks WDRQ’s progress here. Write On: Rosanne Cash, Mark James, Even Stevens On The Market: Detroit – Rust Belt city or city on a and Craig Wiseman were inducted into the Nashville comeback? “Detroit is on a great comeback, but there was a time Songwriters Hall Fame last night (10/11) at the 45th Anniversary Hall of Fame Gala held at the Music City where people moved out of the market,” says Center. Pictured l-r: NaSHOF Board Chair Pat Alger, James, WYCD OM/PD Tim Roberts.

BLAKE, MAREN, FGL, LUKE COMBS LEAD 2017 AIRPLAY an life get much better for Blake Shelton? He anchors one of TV’s top shows, headlines concert dates, has a No. 1 album, and is now the 2017 Country radio airplay leader. CShelton’s 2017 airplay totals propel him to both the top Overall Performer and Top Male spots, driven by a pair of songs – “A Guy With A Girl” and “Every Time I Hear That Song” – that spent three weeks at No. 1. A third single – “I’ll Name The Dogs” – was in the Top 5 as 2017 came to a close. Adding to Shelton’s totals were four cuts from his new album Texoma Shore that charted the week of its release, though he would have topped airplay even without the points generated by those cuts. THEYEAR Florida Georgia Line’s trio of 2017 hits extend Tyler Hubbard and Brian Kelley’s dominance in INMUSIC the Duo/Group Performer category to fi ve years. They’re also the only non-solo male artist to make this year’s Top 10 Overall airplay performers. The Blake Shelton meteoric rise of Maren Morris continued in 2017. Airplay from “80s Mercedes” and “I Could Use A Love Song” vaulted her to the most-heard female artist of the year. Adding to her Country radio presence this year was a featured performance on the No. 1 single “Craving You” with Thomas Rhett. (Airplay points for that song are not included in Morris’ totals.) This year’s Top New Artist title goes to Luke Combs.

Kissling Assistant Professor of Education Dana Stuchul Professor of Education Esther Prins Professor of Education Gwendolyn Lloyd Professor of Education Head of Graduate Program * Signatures are on file in The Graduate School iii ABSTRACT Black Haitian and Haitian American (H/HA) girls exist within multiple intersections that are not adequately addressed in Literacy Studies. This study offers theoretical and pedagogical insights on what it means to teach and study Black girls from transnational communities. The objective was to conceptualize a space which centered the intersectional lives of Black immigrant girls, and create emancipatory learning experiences in reading and writing instruction. The research questions were: How do H/HA girls enrolled in HELP narrate their identities, place, and girlhood in autobiographical writing? In what ways do H/HA girls generate Discourses of race, place, and girlhood through discursive practices in HELP’s classroom? How do the institutional practices of HELP attempt to center the needs and talents of H/HA girls? How does HELP reconfigure learning spaces? This embedded case study examines two units for analysis: the literacies of five H/HA girls, and the institutional practices of the HELP program.

  • A Linguistic Analysis of the Era of Violence in African American Spirituals, Jazz, & Blues 179
Nihonbashi Gakkan University Hirona Matayoshi:Sociolinguistics: A Linguistic Analysis of the Era of Violence in African American Spirituals, Jazz, & Blues 179 開智国際大学紀要 第 15 号(2016) 報告・資料 Sociolinguistics: A Linguistic Analysis of the Era of Violence in African American Spirituals, Jazz, & Blues - Civil Action and Effective Citizenship Education through the Language War 1 Matayoshi, Hirona (又吉弘那) This paper is a linguistic critical analysis by reflecting upon Robin Tolmach Lakoff’s sociolinguistic analysis within her brilliant understanding of linguistics in her book, “The Language War”. She portrays her understanding of linguistics though current events in time. She discusses about how politics and the people are entwined within the “Language War”. Although her book was written in the year 2000, we are continuing her theory. We will add new current event issues to her theory while reflecting along with her book. According to Professor Lakoff, the purpose of linguistics is to translate and interpret the meanings of events for the next generation. Therefore, the writer of this article will follow Professor Lakoff’s strategies while explaining past issues toward recent issues that are occurring in the news so we can understand the meaning of the “Language War”. We must first look at the “Language War” in the testimony of violence within African American Blues, Jazz, and Spirituals. African American Blues, Jazz, and Spirituals are historical voices, resources, databases of witnesses, and victims of the past. These voices screamed out the inequality of generations. In a way, they are still surviving a "Language War" even today. They screamed for help in protest and yet due to those who perpetuated the violence of segregation, intimidation, and discrimination that took place, “no one” could help them but continued to avoid the problem.
