(HBMS) to collect some local fish and berry data to determine metal concentration content in potential local food sources. The purpose for collecting this data was to incorporate it into the human health risk assessment (HHRA) being conducted by Intrinsik. Any assessment of the results in terms of potential risk to human health from the consumption of local fish and blueberries is beyond the scope of this report and will be addressed in detail in the human health risk assessment currently being conducted by HBMS. The scope of work was taken from the draft “Flin Flon Local Food Survey Summary and Local Food Sampling Plan” (Intrinsik, 2008) and is summarized in the Table 2.1 below. Some adjustments to the sampling plan were made that are discussed later in this report.     Doug Evans: Contributions to Northern Manitoba Archaeology Katherine Pettipas Introduction In the fall of 2014, the Manitoba Archaeological Society (MAS) honoured a number of avocational archaeologists at its annual conference. On this occasion, I had the opportunity to present an overview of the contributions of former Flin Flonner Doug Evans to our knowledge and understanding of the province’s northern heritage. Figure 1: Doug Evans Doug is an avocational heritage aficionado and a long-time member of the MAS. He is also the founder of the Flin Flon Heritage Project that involves the collection and digitization of the history of the northern mining town. Northerners may recognize him as the author of his witty books about early days in the community, namely, Tales from a Town with a Funny Name and A Child’s Garden of Rocks. Few are aware of Doug’s valuable work as an avocational archaeologist and ethnographer in the 1950s and 1960s. The proceeds of his efforts (artifacts and photographs) have been donated to The Manitoba Museum, and to the University of Winnipeg (oral history). The Manitoba Archaeological Society recognized Doug’s efforts many years ago by naming a site in the Flin Flon/Lake Athapapuskow area and a particular type of projectile point after him.     A System Plan FOR MANITOBA’S PROVINCIAL PARKS Introduction Provincial parks play an important role in the lives of Manitobans. Parks contribute to the conservation of our natural lands and cultural heritage, offer excellent camping, cottaging and other outdoor recreational opportunities, contribute to Manitoba’s economic well-being through tourism and resource development, and strengthen Manitoba’s climate change resiliency and adaptability. Together, Manitoba’s provincial parks form the provincial park system (Appendix 1). The purposes of this system are defined in The Provincial Parks Act. The system is intended to: a) conserve ecosystems and maintain biodiversity b) preserve unique and representative natural, cultural and heritage resources c) provide outdoor recreational and educational opportunities and experiences in a natural setting WHAT IS A SYSTEM PLAN? To help manage park lands, The Provincial Parks Act requires that a system plan be prepared by the Manitoba government. The system plan is intended to help balance the various demands placed on park land and to ensure that an organized approach is taken to park protection, use and development over the long term. This system plan identifies park boundaries, explains the role of each park and outlines land use categories to help guide park use and management. Since the first park system plan was published in 1985, the provincial park system has evolved greatly and it will continue to change as Manitoba’s network of protected areas grows and new park management ideals are embraced. This system plan reflects the continually evolving beliefs and values that inform Manitoba’s approach to the management of these important areas.
