Making a Canal Nelson's Victory at Trafalgar May Have Given Britain
Talk 4: Making a Canal Nelson’s victory at Trafalgar may have given Britain sea superiority, but it hardly affected Napoleon’s military position in continental Europe. Five years on and the Emperor could still marshal an army of half a million men for an invasion of Russia, but there he met with unparalleled defeat. After Borodino the largest and bloodiest battle of the Napoleonic wars, the invasion faltered and then turned into a terrible retreat. As snippets of news about the retreat from Moscow reached London Sir Thomas Bernard and Colonel John Drinkwater attended a small ceremony in Regents Park. We might imagine each man turned over a little soil before handing the spade to someone more adept in its use. Perhaps a few proprietors watched the event, wondering how long it would be before they could attend another ceremony, this time to celebrate the completion of the project in which they had invested. And also speculating as to how they might be affected by the demise of Napoleon. Anyone taking a cursory look at a map on which the line of the Regents Canal had been drawn might think construction would be as simple as digging the Grand Junction branch canal, but closer inspection of a cross sectional drawing showed it would be far more complicated. For a start three tunnels were needed. One was hardly bigger than a wide bridge, but the other two, the first at Maida Hill and the second at Islington, were substantial undertakings. Then there was the fall from Paddington to Limehouse, 86 feet in all, which would demand the construction of 12 locks. -

Keeley Hawes, Philip Glenister, Dean Andrews, Marshall Lancaster, Montserrat Lombard
Ashes to Ashes (DVD) Talent: Keeley Hawes, Philip Glenister, Dean Andrews, Marshall Lancaster, Montserrat Lombard. Director: Johnny Campbell, Bille Eltringham Classification: M (Mature) Duration: 516 minutes (including 8 episodes) We rate it: Five stars. Date of review: 22nd October, 2009 Several years ago, audiences in both the UK and Australia were introduced to the wondrous BBC drama Life on Mars. Taking its name from a David Bowie song, Life on Mars followed the intriguing exploits of a 2006 Manchester cop, Sam Tyler, (played by the wonderful John Simm) who was hit by a car and seemingly sent back in time to 1973. The show functioned as a compelling psychological thriller, following Tyler’s efforts to discover what had sent him back in time (was he in a coma, dying, dreaming, or in some kind of limbo-land or Purgatory?) and his attempts to escape 1973 and get back to his life in 2006. At the same time, the show was a loving and at times hilarious re-creation of the 1970s British cop-show milieu (think of The Sweeney crossed with The Professionals, but shot with today’s filmmaking technology), and it featured the wonderful Philip Glenister as the now-iconic DCI Gene Hunt, a politically- incorrect, hilariously foul-mouthed and utterly lovable character who infuriated Tyler as often as he helped him in his various quests. Life on Mars was a critical and commercial hit, and it spawned a tremendously effective second series. The characters central to Life on Mars were both sympathetic and fascinating, the writing and direction of the episodes occasionally awe-inspiring, and the mystery at the heart of the entire show was brilliantly handled to the very end. -

Call the Midwife Is a Moving and Intimate Insight Into the Colourful World of Midwifery and Family Life in 1950’S East London
A Neal Street Production for BBC One Starring Jessica Raine with Jenny Agutter, Pam Ferris, Miranda Hart and Judy Parfitt Based on the best-selling memoirs by Jennifer Worth and dramatised by Heidi Thomas Call the Midwife is a moving and intimate insight into the colourful world of midwifery and family life in 1950’s East London. We are introduced to the community through the eyes of young nurse Jenny Lee as she arrives at Nonnatus House to live and work as a midwife alongside an Order of Nuns. As Jenny comes to terms with her new life, we meet some phenomenal people who prove that their warmth, resilience and determination are to be admired beyond measure. At the heart of this world are the Sisters of St Raymond Nonnatus who have been active in the East End as Anglican nursing nuns since the beginning of the 20th century. The Sisters and the midwives of Nonnatus House carry out many nursing duties across the community. However, with between 80 and 100 babies being born each month in Poplar alone, their primary work is to help bring safe childbirth to women in the area and to look after their countless newborns. The series was commissioned by Danny Cohen, Controller BBC One, and Ben Stephenson, Controller BBC Drama. It was adapted with the blessing and guidance of Jennifer Worth, who worked closely with Neal Street Productions and screenwriter Heidi Thomas (Upstairs Downstairs, Cranford) up until she passed away shortly before filming began in the summer of 2011. Starring newcomer Jessica Raine as Jenny, the cast includes Jenny Agutter, Pam Ferris, Miranda Hart and Judy Parfitt. -
