Partners in Learning Survey

You’re invited to participate in the Tell Them From Me (TTFM) Partners in Learning survey designed for parents and carers. This survey complements the TTFM student and teacher surveys, which focus on student engagement, wellbeing and effective teaching practices. All Department of Education schools have the opportunity to participate if they choose.

Why should I participate?

Parents and carers are an important and valued part of the school community. Schools can use survey feedback to make practical improvements and inform school planning.

What does it involve?

This online survey takes about 15 minutes to complete. It is anonymous and voluntary.

If you have more than one child at this school, and feel that your children’s experiences differ, you can complete the survey more than once.

How can I participate?

You can access the survey in your own time, between Monday, 21 August and Friday, 13 October 2017. Follow the link below on your computer or tablet:

SCIENCE

Endeavour Sports High Schools first ever Science Week

National Science Week is an annual festival of Science that takes place in August each year. This celebration aims to raise the profile and increase the public understanding and appreciation of science, innovation, engineering and technology, and their role in maintaining and improving our society, economy and environment. Throughout the week the Science faculty organised events for all junior students to participate in.

Year 7 students researched a famous scientist and the contribution they made to the field. The students’ posters will be displayed around the school to remind students of the importance of Science during our first celebration of Science Week.

Year 8 attended the Big Science Big Fun Show by Fizzics Education. Students witnessed giant bubbles, flying toilet paper, a hair-raising electricity experiment, bubbling liquid nitrogen demonstrations, and levitating beach balls. Students experienced a nail chair, a giant gyroscope, fire balls, coloured shadows and a flame equalizer. Not only were students amazed and excited by this presentation but they learned about numerous outcomes from the NSW Stage 4 Science syllabus.

Year 9 students were presented Mystery Investigators by radio host from 2GB Richard Saunders and Maynard. This taught students how to use science to unlock the secrets behind the strange and mysterious, in a fun and interactive show.

Year 10 experienced Education Interactive presenting a Forensic Science workshop. The murder case explored the importance of cyber safety with social networks, the dangers of drink spiking and the consequences of risk taking. The scenario was: a 17 year old school girl is found lying dead on the ground in a disused military bunker. The girl’s parents reported her missing four days prior when she failed to return home from school. There are signs of a struggle and a substantial wound to the head appears to be the cause of death. Students examined the crime scene and analysed the evidence including entomology, trace evidence fingerprints, toxicology and much more. Students had to collect evidence to solve the murder.

Endeavour was invited by Compass at University to participate in the Sydney Festival at the Australian Museum. Students and teachers were invited to join in the biggest celebration of Science for schools, presented by the Australian Museum in collaboration with over 50 other leading organisations. With interactive workshops, shows, and a speciality Expo demonstrating the latest in science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics (STEAM), it’s hard not to get inspired! Indigenous and non-Indigenous girls participated in an engineering egg challenge, virtual reality and a frog encounter.

HSIE

Terms 2 and 3 have been very busy in HSIE this year and our students have participated in a number of extra activities designed to complement the work being completed in class in various subjects.

Our Years 9 and 10 Commerce classes have entered and are currently playing the ASX Schools Sharemarket game. Students receive a virtual $50 000 which they then invest over a 10 week period, in 200 companies listed on the Australia ASX. The prices students buy and sell at are at the same prices as they would be in the live market so this is as close to real life trading as they can get. The teams compete against other teams throughout Australia to see who can make the most profit during this period. It is a practical and engaging way to bring the theory of our Commerce courses into a real life context and it allows them to deepen their understanding of our “Investing” unit of work. The students really enjoy it and as always there is healthy competition between our teams to see who can make the most from their $50,000.

We recently also had an incursion for Years 9, 10 and 11 called “Mad About Money”, a performance by the National Theatre for Children, sponsored by the IMB Community Foundation. Local IMB Branch representatives were also in attendance and thoroughly enjoyed the performance. The play was a series of four educational sketches which were designed to teach students core financial literacy skills including how to prioritize your needs and wants, the difference between cash and credit, all about investing and the importance of forming a savings habit. The performance was highly engaging for students as the actors combined a script with improvisation based on audience volunteering and participation for ideas to create these humorous yet educational sketches. The performance was a perfect complement to our Years 9 and 10 Commerce elective courses which teach and develop skills in these areas. It was also useful reminder to all students about the importance of improving their skills in managing their personal finances as they grow in independence and begin to move into the casual/part time workforce and beyond.

Historical skills, knowledge and understandings have also been extended for Year 8 this term through their participation in our Medieval Show Incursion. Presenter James Adams is a highly engaging one man show all about the Medieval period which students study in Year 8 History. He explains and demonstrates the development of armour and weaponry, fighting tactics, crime and punishment and general aspects of Medieval culture throughout this period. James Adams bring a wide variety of examples of armour, weaponry, shields and other medieval replica props to show students and they always enjoy the opportunity presented in the session to have a hands-on look at these items and try on the helmets and armour and hold the swords and shields.

8J, our extension History class, competed in the Australian School History Competition. It is a challenging competition as it tests students’ general historical knowledge, source interpretation and critical thinking skills and questions may be. We are proud to report that our results were above the national average in this competitive event. Of the 18 students who sat the competition this year, we achieved seven Credits and five Merits. We are very proud of our students who participated in this competition. We will extend entry to this competition next year to both our extension classes and other students who would like to sit this competition.

Teachers on HSC HSIE classes have been working extremely hard to ensure that all our students are equipped with the skills, knowledge and understanding that they need to experience success in their forthcoming HSC exams. I encourage all students to keep working hard right up until their exam is complete as improvements in their performance during this period can still be made and positively influence their end result. HSIE teachers are available and keen to read and give feedback on any practice responses, exams or essays that students complete and I urge students to take advantage of our teachers’ passion for and expertise in their subjects in the lead up to the HSC.

From HSIE we wish all our HSC students the very best of luck.

EXTENSION CLASS – Year 7

It has been another busy and productive term with some new and exciting opportunities for each of the extension classes.

Whole class activities were enjoyed by Year 7J at the fieldtrip to the Botanic Gardens for the Enviromath experience with Mr O’Riordan and Mr Richardson and Year 8J’s two incursions, the Medieval Exhibition for History run by Mrs Certoma and the Inquisitive Minds workshop for Mathematics, run by Mr Marland.

A team of 12 students from both 8J and 7J also participated in Mind Marathon with Mr Briscoe-Hough at East Hills Boys High School, representing Endeavour for the first time with outstanding results.

Our debating representatives, Byron Kay, Tyler Sherman, Harrison Parker and Cassie Brown enjoyed more success by taking out the ZONE championship against Engadine High School. A fantastic effort to them and Mr Moller ( see his report in Debating news.)

The Year 7J debating team of Alexandra Singleton, Dane Kingston, Brock La Macchia, Damien Murphy and Caleb Strahl also demonstrated their public speaking skills at the same event coming a very close second on the day.

Competitions & Extension Initiatives

Mind Marathon Report: Mr Rhys Briscoe-Hough

On Friday 28 July we sent two teams (Year 7 and Year 8) to compete in the Mind Marathon at East Hills Boys High. Our teams were required to answer questions in the following categories: Science, English, Maths, HSIE & General Knowledge. The teams were also required to complete an Engineering challenge within a time period and with minimal resources.

Of the 32 teams that competed, our Year 8's placed 7th and our Year 7's placed 9th. Congratulations guys! Endeavour is very proud of this achievement. Well done to Brae Ovens,Tamara Girdwood-Reich, Lara Wakeham, Dion Vallianos, Mohammad Khaled, Ellen Stupar from Year 7 and Tyler Sherman, Reneigh Scott, Felicity McNeill, Sean Kore, Jasmine Catts from Year 8.

Inquisitive Minds Report: Mr Craig Marland

Talented Mathematicians from 7J, 8J and the best performers in Maths this year from 8K participated in a workshop named Inquisitive Minds which involved students solving and working their way through problems, patterns, pictures and puzzles. During this workshop, students participated in an interactive lesson on strategic problem solving and competed against each other in various competitions for prizes. All of the students were eager participants and all reported that they had a great day.

Enviromaths Report: Mr Peter O’Riordan

The 7J class attended the fieldtrip to the Botanic Gardens to explore real world problems aligned with horticultural maintenance and park planning. Some of the activities involved them measuring the area of garden beds, age, width and height estimations of trees, as well as estimating temperature and humidity.

It was an enjoyable day and the students expressed a lot of enthusiasm with the questions they asked and their cooperation with their guide. It was a valuable out-of-class experience for them visiting the city and applying formulas and equations to everyday things.

7J & 8J Lego Robotics Challenge: Mr Glen Tindall

Our STEM program has a new initiative involving selected extension students from non TSP who will be making preparations for and upskilling in robotics and engineering to take on the Global Lego Robotics challenge in November. If they make it through the first round the time frame will be extended for further preparation and this will be another first time representation for Endeavour at this event. Students who will be involved in this are: Nicholas Verteouris (7J), Mohammad Khaled (7J), Claire Greiss (8J), Abby Stewart (8J), Brock La Macchia (7J), Cooper Johnson (7J) and Brenden Burbidge (7J.) We wish them and Mr Tindall the best of luck in this event.

History Competition Results

The 8J class participated in the Australian History competition in Term 2 and the results demonstrated our students are performing well above state average in this subject. Special mention goes to Thomas Longhurst and Marina Hilellis, both achieving outstanding results and other notable participants included Bradley Griffin, Harrison Parker, Kynan Hodges, Reneigh Scott and Sean Kore. Congratulations to all.

I look forward to more exciting events in Term 4 for both classes and for the staff, who I anticipate will be undertaking a second Professional Development in Gifted Education to assist with differentiation of their programming for 2018.

DEBATING

Year 8 Debating Success: 3 from 3 – Zone Champions

It has been an exciting term of Debating at Endeavour, which has culminated in our Year 8 Debating team being crowned, Zone 7 Champions. The team is 1 of 14 teams from across NSW who will now compete in the knock-out stage of the competition.

On Thursday 17 September the junior debating teams travelled to Engadine High School to compete in the final round of the qualifying stage of the Premier’s Debating Challenge.

For our Year 7 team consisting of Dane Kingston, Alexandra Singleton, Caleb Strahl, Brae Ovens, Damien Murphy, and Brock La Machia, their first year of debating has provided them with incredible insight and passion that with diligence and commitment will see fantastic results in 2018 and beyond.

For our Year 8 team, this third debate was a “must win” and the team was hungry for victory. The topic debated was “That all Australians need to complete and pass online testing prior to elections in order to vote”. The team consisting of Byron Kay, Harrison Parker, Cassandra Brown, and Tyler Sherman argued against the topic and showed their sophistication and debating excellence from the very start. After a fiery and contentious debate, Endeavour was awarded the victory, which secured the competition in our favour and awarded Endeavour with the title of Zone 7 Champions for 2017.

With this victory, the Year 8 team will proceed through to the regional finals against Kirrawee High School.

Well done to the Year 7 team for a tremendous year in debating, and good luck to Year 8 in the finals. Your diligence and commitment throughout the year has been admirable. We are so proud of your efforts.

CLONTARF CORNER

It’s that time again to share the love and positive news of what’s been happening at Clontarf.

A handful of boys from Year 8, 9, 10, have been to North Sydney to participate in the Ross Kelly Cup. One of the most prestigious carnivals in NSW the boys have to play for. As always, they are representing our school and program with flying colours. With over 20 teams this year it proves to be the biggest carnival yet.

Good Bunch Lunch The “Good Bunch Lunch” (GBL) brings together all students with 100% attendance each week for a healthy cooked meal. On the menu was a slow cooked beef Stroganoff prepared by "TC". From all reports the boys loved it, whilst still learning the value of life skills - setting up the tables, chairs, plates and cutlery, and then washing up. All staff are very welcome to join in on GBL so come and mix with the boys in their space :-)

Minister For Education Visit

There are many moments when Clontarf staff are proud of the boys. None more than the group of boys who proudly represented our school and the program, providing a tour of the room for the Minister for Education, Rob Stokes MP. Immersing the boys in these opportunities is a win-win for everyone. Their well-being, self-esteem, and pride increases ten-fold.

Health Check Screening Day

Fourteen local health providers, including dental, hearing, eyesight, GP, alcohol and other drugs and Headspace, all volunteered their time to perform various check-ups and deliver sessions with our students enrolled in the Clontarf program.

Why We Go On Camps

We believe that one of the most effective tools we have to build meaningful and lasting relationships with our boys is to get them out of their normal environment through overnight camps.

In most cases, our camps will be conducted in other parts of the state that have Clontarf Academies, allowing interaction with the wider Clontarf family, and a chance to see that they are a part of something big. Often times it will also mean catching up with cousins and friends who are in the program in our country locations.

It is important to note that our camps are an engagement tool, rather than a reward. While the students that are doing the right thing will rarely miss the chance to get on a Clontarf camp, we need to get around the boys who, for whatever reason, are not bringing their best selves to the table when they are at school. Our camps focus on life- skills (such as making our own meals, or providing opportunities for the boys to demonstrate leadership through community volunteering) that will help develop their maturity and increase the value they place on their futures.

Camps are perhaps the most powerful strategy we have at our disposal in the quest to modify behaviour. Year 7 & 8 Wellbeing Camp – All Smiles! Training The boys at a friendly game of indoor lazer-tag.

Early morning training is a great way Morning Training Sessions to teach the boys the importance of Thursday - 7.30AM starting the day on a positive note. From 6am we round the boys up in ALL STAFF WELCOME the bus and then put them through a high energy, fun workout in the gym or on the active area. They shower and then have a healthy breakfast before entering the classroom already having achieved a great outcome for the day. HOME

STEM

Term 3 has been a busy one with the arrival of our first lot of equipment for our exciting new STEM program. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths and its purpose is to provide students with lessons that are grounded in real life scenarios using the latest technology and with a strong focus on group work. The intent is to show how STEM subjects are linked together in real world jobs, assist students in the development of the skill sets that will help them gain employment after school and motivate them to pursue STEM core subjects and careers.

This project has been made possible by means of a grant from Toyota through the Schools Plus program and we are deeply grateful for the support and encouragement they have provided to us in this endeavour.

The first STEM lessons have made use of our OZOBOT programmable robots and have proven immensely popular with students and teachers alike. Coding is a main component of STEM in our school and these robots have the capability to cater to all age groups and abilities. Our Year 7 and Year 8 Extension classes along with Special Education have been the first to use these robots and we were even able to integrate a STEM coding lesson into an English lesson! Teachers are now requesting to be trained in use of the OZOBOT robots so as to implement this resource into their own core learning areas.

Endeavour is also for the first time entering the FIRST LEGO LEAGUE challenge that will see a team of our talented Year 7 and Year 8 students compete against schools from over 80 countries in a global robotics competition. The first round of the competition is on 17 November and we look forward to our team flying the flag for team Endeavour in their debut.

Some of the other resources we have received include programmable flying drones, 3D printers, 3D CAD, laptops and a 3D scanner. We look forward to rolling out bigger and better STEM lessons for our students next term and are confident they will make a big impact in motivating our students in their learning of STEM subjects.

MEDIEVAL SHOW – Year 8

The Medieval show was a wonderful experience. We all felt like we were back in the Middle Ages. During the show, we got to see lots of armour and weapons. The chain mail was extremely heavy and it was worn for protection. We learned that the armour progressed from chain mail to plated armour to full suits of armour. They also had very strong helmets. All the knights were equipped with strong, heavy shields that protected the knights in the ferocious battles during the Middle Ages. We got to see daggers, swords and we were told about the different methods of attack. We also got to check out throwing weapons and siege weapons. We enjoyed learning about all these things from the Middle Ages and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. By Joshua Kermond and Michael Longhurst

TSP NETBALL

It’s been a non-stop term for our Netballers. They have had extensive training, competed in numerous Netball competitions and achieved some great results!

The term started with our Opens team playing in the second round of their Knockout Competition at Menai Indoor Sports Centre on Monday 24 July, earning them the title of Sydney East Champions. They were undefeated and progressed to the finals which were held over two days at Berkeley, near Wollongong. Our girls played their best netball and ended up second in the State. Congratulations on such a great result girls!

The next stage in the NSW Schools Cup competition was held in August. For two consecutive days we went to Netball Central at Olympic Park with a Year 7&8 team and a Year 9&10 team. Both days were lots of fun and our Year 7&8 team walked away as runners-up in the Sydney Metro area.

Year 7 & 8 Team Year 9 & 10 Team After two terms of Netball at Bellingara every Thursday, we have come to the end of our winter sport season. All three of our teams make it into the finals of the Port Hacking Zone.

Our Year 9&10 team won against Menai…after an 11 year drought!

Runners up Sydney Metro 2017

Our Year 7 team was in the Final against our Year 8 team….you guessed it, ENDEAVOUR won!

Year 8 scraped through by a small margin over our Year 7 team. CONGRATULATIONS to all.

TSP RUGBY LEAGUE

GIO Cup

The GIO Cup campaign continued throughout Term 3 with our final pool game against Patrician Brothers Blacktown early in the term played at Shark Park. The game swung to and fro for the majority of the game but a late swing in possession to Patrician Brothers gave them a 26-18 victory.

The result placed us 3rd in pool A which then put us up against Bass High in the quarter final. On the day we had a number of players out due to sickness and injury which led to the game being very scrappy. We got out to an early lead but Bass fought back and managed to fight their way to the front with nine minutes remaining in the second half. A brilliant individual try to Teig Wilton with four minutes remaining and we were able to hold onto an 18-14 lead to seal the victory.

The semi final was played six days later at against Westfields Sports High School. Westfields fought back from an 18 nil deficit against Patrician Brothers in their quarter final to win 26-18 so we knew we were in for a tough match. We started the game well with an early try to keep in contact with Westfields. A couple of crucial calls in the game allowed possession to swing Westfields’ way and they were able to capitalise. The score ended up with Westfields running out 33-10 victors. As the GIO Cup campaign came to a close, we were able to reflect on a difficult year. We had a young side with two boys from Year 10 and a large number of Year 11 boys playing in our top team.

Australian Schoolboys

The three Endeavour boys that represented NSWCHS at the Australian titles in the last school holidays had an outstanding tournament by all reports. Bronson Xerri, Teig Wilton and Dylan Smith were also rewarded with selection in the Australian Schoolboys team. This is a fantastic achievement for all of the boys. Bronson was also named Player of the Championships which is exceptional as he is still only 16 years old at the time of the carnival and in Year 11. Further accolades were earned by Teig who was named as Carnival MVP for NSW CHS. The boys will play against New Zealand 18s in the September school holidays. Buckley Shield

Our Buckley Shield team qualified for the semi final of the Sports High Schools Competition. The boys played against Westfields Sports High School and despite struggling for numbers on the day, put in a gallant performance against a much bigger side.

NYC Debut

Teig Wilton (right) made his NYC Holden Cup debut for the Sharks in round 24. This is a fantastic achievement for Teig who at 18 is playing against players two years older than him. Good luck to Teig and Mr Leary, trainer for this team, as they make their way into the semi finals.

NRL News

Congratulations to Year 12 student Dylan Smith (left) who signed an NRL contract recently with the . This means that Dylan will be training with the NRL squad once the pre season starts.

A recent study of the NRL squads revealed that there are 14 Endeavour Graduates signed at 16 NRL clubs. This means that for the majority of the games played on any given weekend will see one or more ex Endeavour students playing for NRL teams. Good luck to Cameron King, Brad Takaraingi, Frank Winterstein, Shaun Lane, Martin Taupau, Curtis Scott, Nu Brown, and Blake Ferguson as their respective teams make their way into the NRL finals series.

Frank Winterstein Visits Current Manly NRL player Frank Winterstein returned to his old stomping ground at ESHS early in Term 3. Frank attended ESHS as a member of TSP Rugby League for six years and graduated in 2004. Frank was a highly decorated schoolboy Rugby League player. He won a Buckley Shield in 1999, was a member of the first ESHS team to win an All Schools State KO, and in 2004 he represented Australian Schoolboys and was the captain of the ESHS team that went the entire year without losing a single game. During the course of the year he led the team to victory in the Arrive Alive Cup (National Champions), the University Shield, the St Marys Cup and the NSW All Schools Sevens.

Since graduating Frank's playing career has seen him cross codes and travel to all corners of the globe. He made his NRL debut with the Canterbury Bulldogs before travelling to the UK and playing for multiple clubs in the Superleague. A lengthy stint in Japanese Rugby then led to a year with the Australian Rugby 7s team. And finally a highly successful return to the NRL with Manly where his consistent good form has seen him earn a two year extension on his contract.

As you can see by the photos, Frank's visit coincided with an NRL bye and he actually joined in the Tuesday morning Opens training session (don't tell Trent Barrett!). Frank then spent an hour with the Year 9 Rugby League class where he detailed his journey and reinforced messages of the importance of education and the role it plays in following your dreams. It was great to see Frank back on the Field of Dreams. The visit is a reflection of his strong connection with the school and his ongoing passion for our TSP Rugby League program.

Billy Magoulias 2017 Holden Cup Lock of the Year Congratulations to former ESHS TSP Rugby League student Billy Magoulias (back row second from the left) who was recently named at lock in the 2017 Holden Cup Team of the Year. Billy graduated in 2014 and was a member of our GIO Cup team that won the national title in his final year of schooling. Currently Billy is an integral part of the record breaking Cronulla Sharks NYC team that enters the upcoming final series as runaway minor premiers. Billy is an excellent example of the well rounded graduates Endeavour Rugby League produces with his ability to combine the rigours of full time Sharks NRL training with completing his degree at the University of Wollongong.

Year 12 2017

Finally, we take the opportunity to say farewell and to thank our Year 12 boys for all their efforts, not only for this year but throughout. They have been a small cohort in numbers, but very big in heart. We have been proud to have them represent our school and our program. We wish them the best of luck in their upcoming HSC and in all of life’s endeavours.

Thank you again Year 12. We will miss you.
