ADVISORY: It will be mid spring in the Rockies during the time of the SGM and the weather is subject to swift and dramatic changes. It can be 25 degrees or snowing or both in the same day. Banff is at about 4,500 feet above sea level and it will be quite cool in the evenings. (Average for May is high of 13C and average low of 0C.) Pack for all weather conditions. You can monitor Banff weather and forecasts on Accuweather or Environment Canada websites. Best to be pre- pared for anything in the mountains. (Also, Banff is a national park and wildlife often meander around the hotels, particularly elk. They can be quite dangerous and should not be approached.) Forbes which stands at 11,850 feet (3,612 metres) • Mountains in Banff National Park are 45 to 120 million years old • The Bow River in Banff flows as far as Hudson's Bay • The largest dammed lake in Banff is Lake Minnewanka and the largest natural lake is Hector Lake • More than 5,000,000 visitors travel to Banff National Park every year • Parts of Banff were built by prisoners during World War I. Thousands of Ukrainian immigrants were sent to internment camps as part of the War Measures Act; those in Banff were enlisted to build roads and to help cre- ate the golf course .
