  • Madonna and Tony Ward in Justify My Love (1990)
MADONNA: REBEL WITH A CAUSE? DUYEN PHAM COMMENTARY: NEHA BAGCHI RESPONSE: DUYEN PHAM Madonna and Tony Ward in Justify My Love (1990). Music is one of the most universally accessible forms of artistic expression and interpretation. It has the ability to transcend language and cultural barriers. Unlike fine literature or classic paintings, one need not possess prior schooling or a high place in society to experience or appreciate even most classical music. Pop music is, by its very nature, the most accessible genre of musical aestheticism. It is produced with the tastes of society in mind and is thus devoured by the populace, whose appetite for catchy beats seems insatiable. Madonna, with a career spanning two decades of number-one selling albums, has not only been the most successful artist in satisfying the public’s hunger for pop music, but—to both those who love her and those who love to hate her—the most meaningful. To fans, she signifies a refreshingly new breed of feminism; to critics, a social disease that gnaws away at the moral fiber holding society together—one that must be eradicated. Particularly through her practices of “gender bending,” Madonna has become the world’s biggest and most socially significant pop icon, as well as the most controversial. She dares to 75 use the tools that were intended by the patriarchy for domination to defy and transgress the norms instilled by that elite class. Madonna is a rebel with a cause. Madonna was born into the realm of American pop culture in the 1980s, alongside the launch of Music Television (MTV) in 1981.

  • Madonna: Like a Crone
ROCK ON: WOMEN, AGEING AND POPULAR MUSIC MADONNA: LIKE A CRONE Reaching fifty in 2008 was a watershed year not just for Madonna, but also for her millions of fans. She is a vital figure for women across generations: through her performances she has popularised feminist politics and debate, and promoted a message of sexual empowerment. Much of her career has hinged on this concept of self-liberation and sexual expressiveness. As a young star she was powerfully seductive - one of the first female performers in the pop mainstream to capitalise on video as a marketing tool, and to make that nexus between sex, pop and commerce so explicit. She also challenged notions of the male/female gaze with her book Sex, and videos like 'Justify My Love'. Much of her allure was centred around her visual image, and her ability to combine an inclusive sexuality with compelling costume changes and personae. Female stars in her wake, from Britney Spears to Lady Gaga, have been clearly influenced by her ideas on performance and sexuality However, becoming a mature woman and a mother has presented her with a dilemma. She is fiercely competitive and it is a matter of personal pride to 'stay on top' in the singles market. But in having to compete with younger women, she is subject to the same pressures to look young, slim and beautiful. As a result, she has to continually sculpt and resculpt her body through rigorous workouts and diet regimes. The sculpted body first emerged when she shed the voluptuous 'Toy Boy' look of her early career for her 'Open Your Heart' video.

  • Madonna's Postmodern Revolution
Journal of Literature and Art Studies, January 2021, Vol. 11, No. 1, 26-32 doi: 10.17265/2159-5836/2021.01.004 D DAVID PUBLISHING The Rebel Madame: Madonna’s Postmodern Revolution Diego Santos Vieira de Jesus ESPM-Rio, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil The aim is to examine Madonna’s revolution regarding gender, sexuality, politics, and religion with the focus on her songs, videos, and live performances. The main argument indicates that Madonna has used postmodern strategies of representation to challenge the foundational truths of sex and gender, promote gender deconstruction and sexual multiplicity, create political sites of resistance, question the Catholic dissociation between the physical and the divine, and bring visual and musical influences from multiple cultures and marginalized identities. Keywords: Madonna, postmodernism, pop culture, sex, gender, sexuality, politics, religion, spirituality Introduction Madonna is not only the world’s highest earning female entertainer, but a pop culture icon. Her career is based on an overall direction that incorporates vision, customer and industry insight, leveraging competences and weaknesses, consistent implementation, and a drive towards continuous renewal. She constructed herself often rewriting her past, organized her own cult borrowing from multiple subaltern subcultures, and targeted different audiences. As a postmodern icon, Madonna also reflects social contradictions and attitudes toward sexuality and religion and addresses the complexities of race and gender. Her use of multiple media—music, concert tours, films, and videos—shows how images and symbols associated with multiracial, LGBT, and feminist groups were inserted into the mainstream. She gave voice to political interventions in mass popular culture, although many critics argue that subaltern voices were co-opted to provide maximum profit.

  • Madonna E Seu Acervo Multiartístico: Os Fetichismos Visuais Na Obra Do Maior Mito

  • 'The Pleasure Is All Mine:' Music and Female Sexual Autonomy on Her
‘The Pleasure Is All Mine:’ Music and Female Sexual Autonomy On her recently released CD Medúlla the singer Björk has a song entitled “The Pleasure is all mine” stressing both pleasure in itself, the pleasures of women in particular, and above all the pleasure of doing something for others. Pleasure, to Björk, is something you yourself enjoy but it is always related to an other. With this ambivalent emphasis on self and other Björk – unwittingly – places herself in the middle of a debate of current feminist philosophy, namely that of relational autonomy. Against the critique of postmodern writers who see the subject as discursive citation, decentered, multiple or even as dead, feminist philosophers such as Catriona Mackenzie, Natalie Stoljar but also Paul Benson and Marilyn Friedman claim the existence of a subject position allowing autonomy.1 However, this feminist notion of autonomy is different from the classical tradition. Feminists have often criticized this classical notion for its mere focus on the individual and on reason and therefore defamed it as a traditionally ‘male’ model. The philosophy of relational autonomy, in contrast, is informed both by some arguments of poststructuralism and by care ethics.2 In opposition to most feminists, these feminist philosophers argue for the importance of autonomy in order to understand oppression and agency. But they modify the individualistically shaped notion by intentionally stressing a multilevel perspective on persons as emotional, embodied, desiring, creative, and feeling, as well as rational creatures. It is their common belief that persons are socially embedded and that agent’s identities are formed within the context of social relations and shaped by a complex of intersecting social determinants, such as race, class, gender, and ethnicity.

It has been accepted for inclusion in Articulāte by an authorized editor of Denison Digital Commons. Madonna' s Postmodern Eroticism by James Smith, '97 Madonna has been called "the most provocative artist in popular music today." The public controversy surrounding virtually every project she has undertaken from "Like a Virgin" in 1984 to her starring role as Eva Peron in the forthcoming Andrew Lloyd Weber version of Evita attests to her ability to push people's cultural buttons. Madonna has not only grabbed the attention of the general public, as any person who has had her 15 minutes of fame might do, but has also made her way into the realm of serious academia, arguably a more respectable accomplishment. In this essay, I will discuss academic arguments both criticizing and applauding the uses of the erotic. Finally, I will illustrate how Madonna embodies the ideologies of postmodernity in her representations of eroticism. One criticism of Madonna's portrayals of sexuality is that they are not erotic but, in fact, pornographic. This criticism surfaced in 1990 with the production of her Justify My Love video, which MTV refused to air in any time slot--even evening rotations.

Wanting, Needing, Waiting Ben Robins First Unitarian Congregation of Toronto 28 November 2015 Note that sermons are written to be spoken, and do not always follow conventional grammar, paragraph structure or timing. Minor changes may have been made to the text, for clarity. Reading Our reading today is an adaptation of Henri Nouwen and Psalm 42. When we feel disconnected from the divine, our sadness is the first sign of its return. To need love is to know love. To need justice is to know justice. Hope brings joy to our isolation. Hope brings love to our longing. The divine is present when deep calls out to deep. Our relationship with the divine, our intimate relationship with the divine, can become deeper and more mature as we wait patiently for its return. Sermon When I was a child, my Dad was my alarm clock. Every school-day morning, he would knock gently on my door, then come into my room and call out, “Up and at ‘em!” Up and at ‘em, time to jump out of bed and take on the world. Game on. There’s work to be done, and now’s the time to do it. I was raised Unitarian, so I knew that there was no God up in the sky who was going to solve my problems for me. I needed to take action.
