“Something’s happening here”: Bonnie and Clyde and the Sixties Bruce Campbell Something’s happening here What it is ain’t exactly clear (Buffalo Springfield) It was a tumultuous time; 1967, the Age of Aquarius, the time of Flower Power, free love, and hippies.1 There were “Be-Ins” on both coasts. In the Haight-Ashbury section of San Francisco, there was a celebration called the “Summer of Love,” and a top-ten song advised “if you’re going to San Francisco, be sure to wear some flowers in your hair” (McKenzie). Young people were encouraged to “turn on, tune in, drop out,” and the nation suddenly learned about LSD.2 A generation just coming of age called for “peace and love.” Others wanted quicker, more violent change. Young men were being sent to Vietnam to fight what many considered an unjust war. Figures from the US National Archives show that more than eleven thousand young Americans died in Vietnam in 1967. The next year, the number would rise to more than eighteen thousand. The war was costing taxpayers billions of dollars a year, and each month, thousands of young men were being drafted into military service.3 When there were demonstrations against the draft and the war, protestors were met by police and National Guard troops. Groups like the Weathermen began using bombs to strike at “the system.”4 Blacks seeking equality grew frustrated with the slow progress of Martin Luther King’s nonviolent approach to achieving racial equality. In the summer of 1967, race riots plagued Newark, Detroit, and other cities.

SAPIENTIAE, FILM AND MEDIA STUDIES, 3 (2010) 109–120 The French New Wave and the New Hollywood: Le Samourai and its American legacy Jacqui Miller Liverpool Hope University (United Kingdom) E-mail: [email protected] Abstract. The French New Wave was an essentially pan-continental cinema. It was influenced both by American gangster films and French noirs, and in turn was one of the principal influences on the New Hollywood, or Hollywood renaissance, the uniquely creative period of American filmmaking running approximately from 1967–1980. This article will examine this cultural exchange and enduring cinematic legacy taking as its central intertext Jean-Pierre Melville’s Le Samourai (1967). Some consideration will be made of its precursors such as This Gun for Hire (Frank Tuttle, 1942) and Pickpocket (Robert Bresson, 1959) but the main emphasis will be the references made to Le Samourai throughout the New Hollywood in films such as The French Connection (William Friedkin, 1971), The Conversation (Francis Ford Coppola, 1974) and American Gigolo (Paul Schrader, 1980). The article will suggest that these films should not be analyzed as isolated texts but rather as composite elements within a super-text and that cross-referential study reveals the incremental layers of resonance each film’s reciprocity brings. This thesis will be explored through recurring themes such as surveillance and alienation expressed in parallel scenes, for example the subway chases in Le Samourai and The French Connection, and the protagonist’s apartment in Le Samourai, The Conversation and American Gigolo. A recent review of a Michael Moorcock novel described his work as “so rich, each work he produces forms part of a complex echo chamber, singing beautifully into both the past and future of his own mythologies” (Warner 2009).

As film critic after film critic stumbled over Screenwriter’s Monthly can be found themselves to call his performance everything from "original" to at the following fine locations: "eccentric," they forgot one thing: the screenwriters, Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio, who did one heck of a job creating Sparrow on paper first. Sure, some critics mentioned the writers when they declared the film "cliché" and attacked it. Since the previous Walt Disney Los Angeles film based on one of its theme park attractions was the unbear- able The Country Bears, Pirates of the Caribbean is surprisingly Above The Fold 370 N. Monday 25 July 2016, London. Ahead of Kirk Douglas’ 100th birthday this December, BFI Southbank pay tribute to this major Hollywood star with a season of 20 of his greatest films, running from 1 September – 4 October 2016. Over the course of his sixty year career, Douglas became known for playing iconic action heroes, and worked with the some of the greatest Hollywood directors of the 1940s and 1950s including Billy Wilder, Howard Hawks, Vincente Minnelli and Stanley Kubrick. Films being screened during the season will include musical drama Young Man with a Horn (Michael Curtiz, 1949) alongside Lauren Bacall and Doris Day, Stanley Kubrick’s epic Spartacus (1960), Champion (Mark Robson, 1949) for which he received the first of three Oscar® nominations for Best Actor, and the sci- fi family favourite 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (Richard Fleischer, 1954). The season will kick off with a special discussion event Kirk Douglas: The Movies, The Muscles, The Dimple; this event will see a panel of film scholars examine Douglas’ performances and star persona, and explore his particular brand of Hollywood masculinity. Also included in the season will be a screening of Seven Days in May (John Frankenheimer, 1964) which Douglas starred in opposite Ava Gardner; the screening will be introduced by English Heritage who will unveil a new blue plaque in honour of Ava Gardner at her former Knightsbridge home later this year. Born Issur Danielovich into a poor immigrant family in New York State, Kirk Douglas began his path to acting success on a special scholarship at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City, where he met Betty Joan Perske (later to become better known as Lauren Bacall), who would play an important role in helping to launch his film career.

TRANSCRIPT A PINEWOOD DIALOGUE WITH ARTHUR PENN Bonnie and Clyde, directed by Arthur Penn, was a watershed film that changed the course of American cinema with its playful, reflexive tone, its unflinching depiction of violence, and its sympathetic portrayal of charismatic outlaw heroes. During the Museum of the Moving Image retrospective American Outsiders: The Cinema of Arthur Penn, the director discussed the critical controversy surrounding the film’s release, and the remarkable collaboration that included Warren Beatty as producer and star, and screenwriter Robert Benton.
