  • 2.6 an Enhanced Architectural, Archaeological and Page 149 Natural Heritage
2.6 Montréal Master Plan 2.6 An enhanced architectural, archaeological and page 149 natural heritage Montréal’s rich heritage reflects the City’s different periods of urbanization and the various ways of building that characterized them. The widespread recognition of this heritage is largely the accomplishment of the citizens who, for many decades, have been playing an active role in heritage preservation. This role is primarily a collective effort achieved through .6 the vigilance of conservation, information and public awareness groups concerned with the 2 fate of old buildings and properties. It has also been carried out through the individual An enhanced built, efforts of residents who care about their property and neighbourhood. The Ville de Montréal recognizes the value of its heritage. Not only does it reflect the City’s archaeological and history and culture, it also contributes to cultivating a stronger sense of belonging among Montrealers. This heritage also contributes to the City’s tourist appeal and to real estate natural heritage investments. These investments concern mainly the recycling of buildings of interest, the revitalization of older neighbourhoods and the consolidation of sites with heritage or landscape value. The City views its heritage from a broader and more integrated perspective. Thus the Master Plan recognizes the following dimensions of Montréal’s heritage: Built heritage, both old and more recent; Archaeological heritage; Commemorative heritage; Natural, landscape and scenic heritage. Heritage conservation and enhancement must also be integrated into all urban development efforts, both private and public, beyond concerns of a strictly regulatory nature. To complement the goals and objectives pertaining to the urban landscape and architectural quality described in Section 2.5, the City intends to encourage the expression of each borough’s identity through intensified efforts in heritage preservation and enhancement as well as by exemplary action.

Home to the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, and the Opéra de Montréal, the complex is situated between Saint Catherine and de Maisonneuve Streets, and St-Urbain and Jeanne-Mance streets, in an area now known as the Quartier des Spectacles in the borough of Ville-Marie. Place des Arts was an initiative of Mayor Jean Drapeau, a noted lover of opera, as part of a project to expand the downtown core eastward from the concentration of business and financial activity in the centre- west part of downtown. The Corporation George-Étienne-Cartier, named in honour of George- Étienne Cartier, a Father of Confederation and opera lover, was set up to build it, and the first part of the complex (including the Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier) was inaugurated on September 21, 1963. The other theatres were added progressively.

  • Making Montreal's Indoor City Accessible for People with Disabilities
Making Montreal’s Indoor City Accessible for People with Disabilities Matthew Hagg Master of Urban Planning Candidate Supervised Research Project Report Submitted to Ahmed M. El‐Geneidy in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Master of Urban Planning degree School of Urban Plan ning McGill Unive rsity October 1, 2009 Making Montreal’s Indoor City Accessible for People with Disabilities ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would like to thank Professor El‐Geneidy for all of his assistance and guidance during this project and to thank Professor Badami for offering to be the second reader for this project. I would also like to thank Lisa Kastelberger, Kevin Manaugh, and Andrew Matheson for their contributions towards the GIS model that this research is based on. Finally, thank you Fawn for everything. I could not have done it without you. 2 Making Montreal’s Indoor City Accessible for People with Disabilities ABSTRACT Indoor pedestrian networks are a facet of the built environment in many cities around the world. They are built for many reasons, including separating pedestrians from motor vehicle traffic, providing a refuge from seasonal inclement weather, or to bring pedestrian traffic and retail businesses to otherwise unused floors of office buildings. In Montreal, an Indoor City (RÉSO) has been in existence since 1962 and has grown to a length of 32 km within the downtown area. While previous studies have examined the network growth and its effects on the levels of accessibility to retail space within the indoor city, the results of these studies do not hold true for people with disabilities. This research examines the ability of a person with physical disabilities and/or mobility impairments to function within Montreal’s Indoor City.
