Call of the Chickadee
December, the Doorway to Winter: Call of the Chickadee “Chicka-dee-dee-dee”- this beloved little bird sings its name for the whole world to hear. Black-capped chickadees (Poecile atricapillus) are small plump birds, just 4 to 5 inches in length with 8-inch wingspans. Both males and females look alike with soft gray backs and tails, white cheeks, a white chest and belly, and a splash of buff-colored feathers below the wings. Their most distinctive characteristics are their black caps and black masks and throats. The chickadees along with their cousins the Carolina chickadees and tufted titmice are members of a passerine family of birds called Paridae and are often referred to as Parids. They are common sites in the winter landscape as they are non-migratory and stay in their habitats year-round. The range of black-capped chickadees and Carolinas overlap and sometimes the birds interbreed so identification can be confusing. Black-capped chickadees are generally a northern species and are the more common bird here at Duke Farms. Black-capped chickadees live in mixed deciduous and coniferous forests, but readily visit bird feeders in suburban backyards. The black-capped chickadee is found from Alaska east through Canada and throughout the upper two-thirds of the United States. They are year-round residents wherever they live. In winter Chickadees often form small flocks that may include other birds like titmice and nuthatches. They flit from tree branch to tree branch gleaning the dead insects, spider eggs, seeds, mosses and berries from bark and trees. Chickadees often collect and cache their food for future meals, sometimes storing food in holes in snags or under bark or lichen. -
Barn Swallows AKA: Mud Swallows
Barn Swallows AKA: Mud Swallows. Close relatives: Purple Martin, Cliff Swallow, Tree Swallow Scientific Classification: Animalia, Chordata, Aves, Passeriformes, Hirundinidae; Hirundo; H. rustica. Bird Size & Markings: Adult Barn Swallows are about 7” long, stand 4” high and have a 13” wingspan. They weigh less than 1 ounce. Males have metallic blue back, wings, and tail with rufous to tawny underside. The blue crown and face is contrasted with the cinnamon forehead and throat. Females are not as brightly colored. Habitat: You can find Barn Swallows feeding in open habitats such as fields, parks, marshes, meadows, ponds, and coastal waters. Their nests are often easy to spot under protected overhangs. Nesting/Dens: Barn Swallows lay 3 to 7 eggs in each brood and can hatch broods twice a year. Brood fledge in about 2 weeks. Both sexes construct the nest of mud pel- lets. Contributor (2013): Paige Koon (SCDNR) DESCRIPTION Taxonomy and Basic Description Red-bellied Woodpecker, David Brezinski/USFWS The cavity nesting guild includes a diverse group of birds that all require the use of cavities or crevices as nesting locations. The most well-known cavity- nesting species are woodpeckers (family Picidae), and this account addresses 4 species: Downy Woodpecker, Pileated Woodpecker, Red-bellied Woodpecker, and Downy Woodpecker, Dan Red-headed Woodpecker. The remaining birds in the Sudia/USFWS Cavity Nesting Birds Guild included in this account are from the families Paridae (Carolina Chickadee), Troglodytidae (Carolina Wren), Apodidae (Chimney Swift), and Hirundinidae (Purple Martin). The Downy Woodpecker is the smallest of the 4 woodpeckers discussed here. It is distinguished in appearance by its black and white coloration, white breast, white striping on the head, and white on Pileated Woodpecker, Mark the back between the wings. Adult males have a Musselman/USFWS smudge of red across the back of their head. The Pileated Woodpecker, the largest in North America, is a striking bird with a red crest and solid-black back. In flight, the white on the underside of its wings is readily apparent. The Red-bellied Red-headed Woodpecker, Woodpecker is a medium-sized woodpecker that is Dave Menke/USFWS distinguished by its zebra-striped wings and back, and red “mullet”. -
Species Account
SPOTTED SANDPIPER Actitis macularius non-breeding visitor, vagrant monotypic Spotted Sandpipers breed across n. N America and winter as far south as c. S America (AOU 1998). The status of this species in the Pacific and the Hawaiian Islands is confused by its similarity to Common Sandpiper, a Eurasian counterpart (Dement'ev and Gladkov 1951c, Cramp and Simmons 1983), that has reached the Hawaiian Islands on at least two occasion and possibly others (David 1991). Records of this pair, unidentified to species, have been reported throughout the Pacific (E 41:115, Clapp 1968a, Pyle and Engbring 1985, Pratt et al. 1987) while confirmed Spotted Sandpipers have been recorded from Clipperton, the Marshall, Johnston, and the Hawaiian Is (Amerson and Shelton 1976, Howell et al. 1993, AOU 1998). David (1991) analyzed records of the two species of Actitis sandpipers in the Southeastern Hawaiian Islands and concluded that, between 1975 and 1989, 6 of 12 birds (1983-1989) could be confirmed as Spotted Sandpipers based on descriptions and photographs while the remaining six (1975-1983) could not be identified. Prior to this, Pyle (1977) listed only the species pair (Spotted/Common Sandpiper) for the Hawaiian Islands. Since this analysis and through the 2000s there have been 25 additional records of Actitis, 18 of which we consider confirmed Spotted Sandpipers while 7 did not include enough descriptive notes to separate them from Common Sandpiper. Because 24 of 37 records in the Southeastern Islands have been confirmed as Spotted Sandpipers and only one has been confirmed as a Common Sandpiper, we assume that the following summary of Actitis sandpipers reflects the status of Spotted Sandpiper, the more expected species in the Southeastern Islands. -

The Evolution of Nest Construction in Swallows (Hirundinidae) Is Associated with the Decrease of Clutch Size

HENEBERG A b s t r a c t : Variability of the nest construction in swallows (Hirundinidae) is more diverse than in other families of oscine birds. I compared the nest-building behaviour with pooled data of clutch size and overall hatching success for 20 species of swallows. The clutch size was significantly higher in temperate cavity-adopting swallow species than in species using other nesting modes including species breeding in evolutionarily advanced mud nests (P<0.05) except of the burrow-excavating Bank Swallow. Decrease of the clutch size during the evolution of nest construction is not compensated by the increase of the overall hatching success. K e y w o r d s : Hirundinidae, nest construction, clutch size, evolution Birds use distinct methods to avoid nest-predation: active nest defence, nest camouflage and concealment or sheltered nesting. While large and powerful species prefer active nest-defence, swallows and martins usually prefer construction of sheltered nests (LLOYD 2004). The nests of swallows vary from natural cavities in trees and rocks, to self-exca- vated burrows to mud retorts and cups attached to vertical faces. Much attention has been devoted to the importance of controlling for phylogeny in com- parative tests (HARVEY & PAGEL 1991), including molecular phylogenetic studies of swallows (WINKLER & SHELDON 1993). Interactions between the nest-construction va- riability and the clutch size, however, had been ignored. -

S A T R ER G S RO CHOOLS P Red Knot (Calidris canutus) Description The Red Knot is a chunky, medium sized shorebird that measures about 10 inches from bill to tail. When in its breeding plumage, the edges of its head and the underside of its neck and belly are orangish. The bird’s upper body is streaked a dark brown. It has a brownish gray tail and yellow green legs and feet. In the winter, the Red Knot carries a plain, grayish plumage that has very few distinctive features. Call Its call is a low, two-note whistle that sometimes includes a churring “knot” sound that is what inspired its name. -
First Record of the Terek Sandpiper in California
FIRST RECORD OF THE TEREK SANDPIPER IN CALIFORNIA ERIKA M. WILSON, 1400 S. BartonSt. #421, Arlington,Virginia 22204 BETTIE R. HARRIMAN, 5188 BittersweetLane, Oshkosh,Wisconsin 54901 On 28 August 1988, while birding at Carmel River State Beach, MontereyCounty, California(36032 ' N, 121057' W), we discoveredan adult Terek Sandpiper (Xenus cinereus). We watched this Eurasian vagrantbetween 1110 and 1135 PDT; we saw it again,along with local birders, between 1215 and 1240 as it foraged on the open beach. Wilson observedthe bird a third time on 5 September 1988 between 1000 and 1130; otherssaw it regularlyuntil 23 September1988. During our first observationa light overcastsky resultedin good viewingconditions, without glare or strongshadows. The weather was mild with a slightbreeze and some offshorefog. We found the Terek Sandpiperfeeding in the Carmel River'sshallow lagoon, separated from the Pacific Ocean by sand dunes. Its long, upturnedbill, quite out of keepingwith any smallwader with whichwe were familiar,immediately attracted our attention. We moved closer and tried unsuccessfullyto photographit. Shortlythereafter all the birdspresent took to the air. The sandpiperflew out over the dunesbut curvedback and landedout of sighton the open beach. We telephonedRobin Roberson,and half an hour later she, Brian Weed, Jan Scott, Bob Tinfie, and Ron Branson arrived,the lattertwo armedwith telephotolenses. We quicklyrelocated the TerekSandpiper on the beach,foraging at the surfline. The followingdescription is basedon our field notes,with color names takenfrom Smithe(197.5). Our bird was a medium-sizedsandpiper resemblinga winter-plumagedSpotted Sandpiper (Actitis rnacularia)but distinguishedby bright yellow-orangelegs and an upturnedbill (Figure1). The evenlycurved, dark horn bill, 1.5 timesthe lengthof the bird'shead, had a fleshyorange base. -
