Few are financial experts or economists but citizens who through their struggles have gained an understanding of financial power that few academics can rival. TNI had the privilege of talking to three warriors against the international banking cartel – a theatre director in Spain, a tax justice leader in Kenya and a local government campaigner in the UK – to hear about their struggles and the insights they have picked up that have relevance to all of us. Simona Levi, a theatre director and performance artist, is based in Barcelona. With her small group Xnet, she succeeded in getting former IMF chief and Bankia executive Rato and 17 others sentenced to prison in 2018 for their financial crimes and role in Spain’s economic crisis. Alvin Mosioma is based in Nairobi and with others stopped a tax avoidance treaty between Kenya and Mauritius. He helped organise the first World Social Forum in Kenya and is the founding Executive Director of Tax Justice Network-Africa. Joel Benjamin is based in London. His work with Debt Resistance UK has exposed a slew of toxic loans sold under false pretences to local authorities and has prompted major lawsuits, parliamentary enquiries and extensive media coverage. Spain recorded a €19.4 billion deficit with China last year. Among the agreements signed was one enabling Spain to export on-the-bone legs of Iberian ham, a popular product, and greater cooperation between the two countries’ scientists in the field of advanced materials. Madrid, however, did not sign on to China’s One Belt, One Road initiative that seeks to improve transport links between Asia and Europe, as it prefers to work with the EU in developing a parallel network of infrastructure to connect it to Asia. Poland and Greece have signed up. The government also does not see many opportunities for Spanish companies in the Chinese mega project, even though Spain has world-class construction and engineering firms. It also views the tendering system as not very transparent and tending to benefit Chinese companies. China is Spain’s largest trading partner outside the EU. Two-way trade rose from US$100 million in 1979 to US$30 billion in 2017. There are some 600 Spanish companies in China, mostly small ones, but multinationals such as Telefónica, Inditex (owner of Zara) and the banks Santander and BBVA also operate in the country.

Su padre, Ramón Rato Rodríguez-San Pedro, nacido en Gijón en 1907 y heredero de una importante fortuna en los ramos de la industria textil y la construcción, era nieto de Faustino Rodríguez-San Pedro (1833-1925), un abogado de renombre afiliado al Partido Conservador que sirvió de diputado, vicepresidente del Senado y alcalde de Madrid (1890) antes de encabezar los ministerios de Hacienda, Estado e Instrucción Pública en los gobiernos presididos por Francisco Silvela y Antonio Maura en los períodos 1902-1903 y 1907-1909. Fue también profesor de universidad, académico de Ciencias Morales y Políticas, y presidente del Consejo de Administración de los Ferrocarriles del Norte. La madre, Aurora Figaredo Sela, era a su vez vástago de dos familias de propietarios de la minería del carbón, la siderometalurgia y la banca con casas solariegas en la localidad de Mieres. Don Ramón Rato, jurista, escritor y acérrimo partidario del régimen dictatorial de Francisco Franco, y luego no menos ferviente defensor de las pretensiones dinásticas del príncipe Juan de Borbón (padre del actual rey, Juan Carlos I), se introdujo en el mundo de la radiodifusión después de la guerra civil y en 1947 puso en marcha la Cadena Rato, que iba a transformarse en uno de los más importantes grupos privados de la radio española.
