Theory of the Beautiful Game: the Unification of European Football
Scottish Journal of Political Economy, Vol. 54, No. 3, July 2007 r 2007 The Author Journal compilation r 2007 Scottish Economic Society. Published by Blackwell Publishing Ltd, 9600 Garsington Road, Oxford, OX4 2DQ, UK and 350 Main St, Malden, MA, 02148, USA THEORY OF THE BEAUTIFUL GAME: THE UNIFICATION OF EUROPEAN FOOTBALL John Vroomann Abstract European football is in a spiral of intra-league and inter-league polarization of talent and wealth. The invariance proposition is revisited with adaptations for win- maximizing sportsman owners facing an uncertain Champions League prize. Sportsman and champion effects have driven European football clubs to the edge of insolvency and polarized competition throughout Europe. Revenue revolutions and financial crises of the Big Five leagues are examined and estimates of competitive balance are compared. The European Super League completes the open-market solution after Bosman. A 30-team Super League is proposed based on the National Football League. In football everything is complicated by the presence of the opposite team. FSartre I Introduction The beauty of the world’s game of football lies in the dynamic balance of symbiotic competition. Since the English Premier League (EPL) broke away from the Football League in 1992, the EPL has effectively lost its competitive balance. The rebellion of the EPL coincided with a deeper media revolution as digital and pay-per-view technologies were delivered by satellite platform into the commercial television vacuum created by public television monopolies throughout Europe. EPL broadcast revenues have exploded 40-fold from h22 million in 1992 to h862 million in 2005 (33% CAGR). -

Inter Milan's Alexis Sánchez Buys Sunny Isles Beach Condo
Inter Milan’s Alexis Sánchez buys Sunny Isles Beach condo He paid $2.45M for a unit on the 26th floor of Ritz-Carlton Residences, Sunny Isles Beach April 23, 2020 Inter Milan soccer player Alexis Alejandro Sánchez Sánchez, known as Alexis, scored a new home in South Florida, The Real Deal has learned. Sánchez, who plays for the Chilean national team and is on loan from Manchester United, paid $2.45 million for unit 2604 at the Ritz-Carlton Residences, Sunny Isles Beach, at 15701 Collins Avenue, according to property records. The 31-year-old forward, whose nickname is “El Niño Maravilla” (meaning the Wonder Child) is Chile’s all-time scorer with 43 goals. He was part of the team that reached the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup. He also previously played for Barcelona. At the Ritz-Carlton, he’ll have access to a private club level on the 33rd floor, a beachfront restaurant, pool deck, kids club, full-service spa, fitness center and wellness center. The 212-unit, 52-story tower was developed by Fortune International Group and the Château Group and designed by architect Bernardo Fort-Brescia of Arquitectonica. The development group declined to comment on the sale. Fortune and Château secured a temporary certificate of occupancy in February, allowing the developers to start closings. In a TRD webinar earlier this month, Fortune President and CEO Edgardo Defortuna said the developers have paid their roughly $210 million construction loan down to about $50 million. More than 70 units have closed, according to property records. Sánchez won’t be too far from soccer superstar Lionel Messi, who paid $5 million for a unit at Porsche Design Tower in Sunny Isles Beach last year. -

We find that offensive tactics measured by (i) simple variables, such as shots on goals, for both home and away teams, as well as the ranking of the teams, or by (ii) transformed variables, such as shots on goal and corners per ball possession, have a strong positive effect. Variables with negative effects are: the punishment of the teams, measured by own yellow and red cards per fouls committed, or simply the red cards, the shots wide, the corners, the ball possession and its difference, and how smart the defenders are playing, measured by the number of the opposite teams’ offsides per own ball possession. In addition, the multinomial logistic regressions show that differences in some match statistics and the ranking of the teams explain 9 out of 10 home victories and almost 6 out of 10 home defeats.
