The possibilities shot up out of the ground from before me like Milton's Pandemonium from the soil of hell. Of course, this assignment ultimately turned out to be much less intimidating and filled with demons than that, but at the time, it felt as though it would be. When you're an English major like I am, your choices are simultaneously extremely numerous and severely restricted, mostly by my inability to write convincingly or sufficiently about most topics. However, after much deliberation and agonizing, I realized that something I am good at is writing about film.

  • First-Run Smoking Presentations in U.S. Movies 1999-2006
First-Run Smoking Presentations in U.S. Movies 1999-2006 Jonathan R. Polansky Stanton Glantz, PhD CENTER FOR TOBAccO CONTROL RESEARCH AND EDUCATION UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, SAN FRANCISCO SAN FRANCISCO, CA 94143 April 2007 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Smoking among American adults fell by half between 1950 and 2002, yet smoking on U.S. movie screens reached historic heights in 2002, topping levels observed a half century earlier.1 Tobacco’s comeback in movies has serious public health implications, because smoking on screen stimulates adolescents to start smoking,2,3 accounting for an estimated 52% of adolescent smoking initiation. Equally important, researchers have observed a dose-response relationship between teens’ exposure to on-screen smoking and smoking initiation: the greater teens’ exposure to smoking in movies, the more likely they are to start smoking. Conversely, if their exposure to smoking in movies were reduced, proportionately fewer teens would likely start smoking. To track smoking trends at the movies, previous analyses have studied the U.S. motion picture industry’s top-grossing films with the heaviest advertising support, deepest audience penetration, and highest box office earnings.4,5 This report is unique in examining the U.S. movie industry’s total output, and also in identifying smoking movies, tobacco incidents, and tobacco impressions with the companies that produced and/or distributed the films — and with their parent corporations, which claim responsibility for tobacco content choices. Examining Hollywood’s product line-up, before and after the public voted at the box office, sheds light on individual studios’ content decisions and industry-wide production patterns amenable to policy reform.

Each chapter is devoted to an individual novel and explores its hero's feelings of socio-psychological estrangement on personal and interpersonal levels as well as the role of the train journey which serves to arouse, create or alleviate such feelings. Chapter One deals with Sanshiro (Sanshiro. 1908) by Natsume Soseki and follows the hero on his long train journey from backward Kyushu to progressive Tokyo.

The set design for the 88th annual production, For the Record, called for a massive 11-foot-diameter rotating globe suspended above the stage and wrapped in the masthead of the show’s fictional newspaper, the Chicago Offering. Northwestern’s set, scenery, and paint shops are located in the Virginia Wadsworth Wirtz Center for the Performing Arts, but Waa-Mu is performed in Cahn Auditorium. How to pull off such a planetary transplant? By deflating Earth. The globe began as a plain white (albeit custom-built) inflatable balloon, but after its initial multisection muslin wrap was created (to determine shrinkage), it was deflated, rigged, reinflated, motorized, map-designed, taped for a paint mask, primed, painted, and unpeeled to reveal computer-generated, to-scale continents.

The Official INDIEGOGO Press Kit: October 2nd- Nov 5th INDIEGOGO LINK: IGG.ME/AT/GIRLONGIRLMOV IE “It’s about defending our identity in the face of skepticism.” –Jodi Savitz director/producer Email: [email protected] Facebook.com/girlongirlmovie Vimeo Channel: vimeo.com/channels/girlongirlmovie Tweet @girlongirlmovie Pinterest.com/girlongirlmovie www.girlongirlmovie.com Contact: Jodi Savitz Phone: 954-415-1736 Email: [email protected] PRESS RELEASE Girl on Girl: an original documentary about lesbian visibility to launch $100,000 Indiegogo Campaign to fund first phase of production! [BROOKLYN NY—OCTOBER 2ND, 2013] After garnering over 12,000 fans on Facebook, Girl on Girl director, Jodi Savitz, is reaching out to the public for support. Beginning October 2nd, Savitz will launch a 35-day crowdfunding campaign on the popular fundraising site, Indiegogo, with the goal of raising $100,000 to fund the first phase of production. So far, Girl on Girl has proven its worth through its growing international fan base, and its sponsorship from New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) and Curve Magazine. Unlike any documentary film to date, Girl on Girl focuses its lens on the lives of feminine lesbians, and invites the audience to discover what life is like for women whose identity is incessantly trivialized and stigmatized, both outside of and within queer spaces. Girl on Girl challenges assumptions of what society imagines a lesbian to look like and, for the first time, addresses the issue of feminine lesbians feeling invisible even after coming out. The independently produced film features such ‘celesbians’ as Lauren Bedford Russell (The Real L Word: Season 3) and Huffington Post columnist and award-winning lesbian porn producer, Jincey Lumpkin (JuicyPinkBox.com), along with several other women from around the country, including New York, Florida, Utah, and North Carolina.

  • Representations of Bisexual Women in Twenty-First Century Popular Culture
Straddling (In)Visibility: Representations of Bisexual Women in Twenty-First Century Popular Culture Sasha Cocarla A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Doctorate of Philosophy in Women's Studies Institute of Feminist and Gender Studies Faculty of Social Sciences University of Ottawa © Sasha Cocarla, Ottawa, Canada 2016 Abstract Throughout the first decade of the 2000s, LGBTQ+ visibility has steadily increased in North American popular culture, allowing for not only more LGBTQ+ characters/figures to surface, but also establishing more diverse and nuanced representations and storylines. Bisexuality, while being part of the increasingly popular phrase of inclusivity (LGBTQ+), however, is one sexuality that not only continues to be overlooked within popular culture but that also continues to be represented in limited ways. In this doctoral thesis I examine how bisexual women are represented within mainstream popular culture, in particular on American television, focusing on two, popular programs (The L Word and the Shot At Love series). These texts have been chosen for popularity and visibility in mainstream media and culture, as well as for how bisexual women are unprecedentedly made central to many of the storylines (The L Word) and the series as a whole (Shot At Love). This analysis provides not only a detailed historical account of bisexual visibility but also discusses bisexuality thematically, highlighting commonalities across bisexual representations as well as shared themes between and with other identities. By examining key examples of bisexuality in popular culture from the first decade of the twenty- first century, my research investigates how representations of bisexuality are often portrayed in conversation with hegemonic understandings of gender and sexuality, specifically highlighting the mainstream "gay rights" movement's narrative of "normality" and "just like you" politics.

  • The L Word and Narrating Biographies
The L Life: The L Word and Narrating Biographies Leah Barbara Caluzzi Submitted in total fulfillment of the requirements of the degree of Masters of Arts (Screen Studies) July 2015 Department of Culture and Communication, Faculty of Arts University of Melbourne Produced on archival quality paper 1 Abstract This thesis examines the reception of the television series The L Word by young adult lesbians in Melbourne. It shows the influence of the series as a media object that is significant to three aspects of these women’s lesbian lifestyle construction: coming out, lifestyle development, and integration into the lesbian community. This thesis argues that, as a media object, the series helps these lesbians narrate their own biographies as they negotiate their life transitions into adulthood. 2 Declaration This is to certify that: i. this thesis comprises only my original work towards the Masters ii. due acknowledgement has been made in the text to all other material used iii. this thesis is less than 40,000 words in length, exclusive of tables, maps, bibliographies and appendices Leah Barbara Caluzzi Date: 9-11-15 3 Acknowledgements I would like to take the opportunities to acknowledge the many people who have helped to make this project possible. Firstly I would like to thank my primary supervisor, Assoc. Professor Audrey Yue for her tireless guidance and direction across the length of this project.
