Although Holy Communion and other Sacraments are offered only to baptized and chrismated (confirmed) Orthodox Christians in good standing with the Church, all are invited to receive the Antidoron (blessed bread) from the priest at the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy. The Antidoron is not a sacrament, but it is reminiscent of the agape feast that followed worship in the ancient Christian Church. After the Divine Liturgy this morning please join us in the Church Hall for fellowship and refreshments. Please complete a Visitor’s Card before you leave today and drop it in the offering tray, or give it to one of the parishioners after the service, or mail it to the Church Office. 1 Today’s Readings: My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior. Verse: For he has regarded the humility of his servant. The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Galatians 6:11-18 Brethren, see with what large letters I am writing to you with my own hand. It is those who want to make a good showing in the flesh that would compel you to be circumcised, and only in order that they may not be persecuted for the cross of Christ. For even those who receive circumcision do not themselves keep the law, but they desire to have you circumcised that they may glory in your flesh. But far be it from me to glory except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. For neither circumcision counts for anything, nor uncircumcision, but a new creation. Peace and mercy be upon all who walk by this rule, upon the Israel of God. Henceforth let no man trouble me; for I bear on my body the marks of Jesus. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit, brethren. Amen. Ἀμήν. 8307 The Gospel According to John 3:13-17 The Lord said, "No one has ascended into heaven but he who descended from heaven, the Son of man who is in heaven. And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. "For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. Making and Baking the koulourakia 2nd Shift 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm Baking and Packing the koulourakia for the freezer If you can work both shifts, please let us know If you have questions, contact Catherine Mariakakis at [email protected] or Joan Marinos at [email protected] 3 FESTIVAL EQUIPMENT CLEAN UP DAY We are scheduling a Festival equipment clean up date> Saturday, September 23 9:00 am – 1:00 pm At the conclusion of our last festival we had rolled all the grills, fryers, and related equipment back to the storage room, without having an opportunity to clean them. During the summer the storage room was being used to collect items for the September Yard Sale. The summer was not a good time to schedule a clean-up because the weather is too hot plus many parishioners are on vacation. October our church has the AHEPA Dinner dance and Chicken dinner. November through February will be too cold to work outside. March we have Great Lent, and April we have Easter. Then the Festival is just three weeks away. The ideal time to clean the Festival equipment will be in September. Tasks: Pressure wash grills, fryers, and souvlas, towel dry and polish with stainless steel polish. We will need a minimum of seven volunteers. I know everyone’s schedules are busy, and your time is valuable, but even if you can only spare an hour or two, please come by. If you can make it, please bring a bowl or sauce pan to hold melted butter, and a pastry brush. That will help ensure we have enough equipment for all the workers. Finally, if you can please let either Evelyn Panos ([email protected]), Theky Pappas ([email protected]), or Cindy Paliouras ([email protected] or [email protected]) know if you’re able to come, so we’ll have some idea of how many helpers to expect, that would be much appreciated.

Robert We begin the New Ecclesiastical Year on September 1 and it is a won- derful opportunity to embark on a fresh start in our Church life. It is an opportunity to renew the cycle of remembering Christ's life. In the months ahead we will remember Christ's birth during the Nativity Sea- son to Great Lent and the Paschal Season. There is much wisdom in this renewing cycle. As we observe the various feasts including the lives of the Theotokos and all the saints, we also observe the Scripture readings, and Fasts as the year progresses. The liturgical cycle was established to aid and assist us in learning the life of Christ utilizing the Feast Days, Icons, Scripture, and Fasts to teach us. Many people look for different focuses in their lives and may often cen- ter their lives around things other than Christ. When we center our lives around temporary things, we can become empty in various parts of our lives. Living our lives with Christ as our focal point provides everything falling into place as it should. People that center their lives around Christ and His Holy Church will live a well balanced life. The focal point of their lives will always be there and it will be a light to lead them to the truth. As we start our new Church year I pray that we are guided and taught to strengthen our foundation with the knowledge and truth of our Lord and Savior.

    THE FLAME HOLY TRINITY GREEK ORTHODOX CATHEDRAL Monthly Newsletter Volume 4, Issues 9 and 10 September-October 2014 TRIUMPH AND TRAGEDY — THE ELEVATION OF THE HOLY CROSS By Father George Wilson rthodox faithful celebrate one of the most revered feasts of the Church just fourteen days after the new OEcclesiastical Year begins on September 1. The feast O is described as follows: “In the year 325 A.D. after the persecutions against the Christians had just ended, Christians were free to express their religious feelings and to adorn their places of worship with symbols of the faith such as the cross. Empress Helen, a devout Christian and mother of Emperor Constantine the Great, went to Jerusalem to undertake a mission of retrieving the cross upon which Christ had been crucified. After a futile search, the Empress was attracted by the scent of a plant called vasilikos (basil) in the area where Jesus had been put to death. She ordered excavation, and three crosses were unearthed. To determine the cross upon which Christ had died, a paralyzed person was placed on all three. And, when he was placed on the True Cross, he recovered miraculously and walked. The event was celebrated on September 14. Patriarch Makarios, who also witnessed the miracle at the historic site, raised the cross and blessed the people with it as they responded “Lord have mercy.” The Gospel lesson on this feast day is taken from the crucifixion account from the Gospel according to John. It is reminiscent of the heart wrenching narrative that Christian faithful experience during Holy Week as the Passion of our Lord and Savior is played out before the very eyes of our hearts.
