Education, Cultural, and Youth Ministries Committee Completes New Project

Greek Pavilion at Children’s World’s Fair — A Smashing Success! By Steven E. Psarellis, Committee Chairman

The Holy Trinity Cathedral family celebrated Greek Independence Day, as well as recognized the Church’s 150 years history, at the 2014 Children’s World’s Fair, a city-wide function that took place on Saturday, March 22, at the Louisiana Children’s Museum. Personally, it was especially gratifying to witness the entire community participate in a completely new and exciting project that encompassed children, youth, young adults, and not so young adults, working as a team to affirm to the greater New Orleans residents that the Holy Trinity Cathedral members were, are, and will remain one of the brightest colors in this city’s quilt of cultures.

I am indebted to the parishioners and friends, who encouraged the Education, Cultural, and Youth Ministries Committee (ECYM) to undertake the project, and to all contributing team players, who ultimately made this endeavor a huge success. Their efforts and support prompt me to provide a summary of what occurred during this one day event and to recognize the efforts of those who made it possible.

The 2014 Children’s World’s Fair presented a once in a lifetime opportunity for Holy Trinity members to showcase the community to the general New Orleans population while also celebrating its unique culture. The parish was invited to set up a Greek pavilion on the first floor of the Children’s Museum, providing crafts for the children, small tastes of Greek food, traditional Greek dancing, and any other offerings that would define its ethnicity. Coincidently, the World’s Fair fundraiser was scheduled the same weekend that the Greek School children traditionally celebrate Greek Independence Day. When various members of the Holy Trinity Cathedral family were approached in the early planning stages of this project, the Committee received only positive reinforcement and eager commitments for total participation.

First to jump on board were the Hellenic Dancers, who entertained the patrons and guests with traditional folk dances in the museum’s auditorium. Additionally, the 150 th Anniversary Committee and the Keepers of the Faith— Archives Committee enthusiastically prepared a booth that featured Holy Trinity’s 150 years history. Rounding out the equation, Koula Vennis on behalf of the Cathedral Montessori School offered immediate input on crafts that tied into the theme of the World’s Fair: Waters of the World. Her efforts brought much joy to the children. The undersigned commissioned a new mural, which an artist drew and my office assistant Lauren Labostrie spent countless hours painting. It served as a backdrop where numerous guests t

The Committee extends a special thank you to the Greek Festival Committee, Dawn-Rachel Harvey, Choice Copy Service, and the Louisiana Children’s Museum for their financial contributions. Finally, this program would not have been possible without the invaluable assistance, support, and stamina of my assistant, Lauren Labostrie. She spent hours after work coordinating details with the Children’s Museum staff, helping to design and paint the Santorini backdrop, setting up the Greek pavilion on Friday, and photographing visitors throughout the event on Saturday. In my opinion, she earned the right to be named “Honorary Greek.”

When one adds the ECYM Committee members, who were unable to attend but whose encouragement was critical to the success of the program, as well as the unsung heroes, the parents of the performing children, over eighty-five (85) community members and friends participated in organizing, contributing, and enjoying the fruits of this great celebration.

On behalf of the ECYM Committee, I sincerely thank all of the above and extend a call to the Holy Trinity Cathedral family to maintain this exhilarating energy level for the upcoming Greek Festival and invite them to stay tuned for future projects that the entire community can proudly embrace. Steven E. Psarellis, Chairman 3

Inspirational Words to Live By

Periodically, the Sunday homily impacts parishioners to the point that they request a copy of the message from the pulpit. The Second Sunday of Lent—March 16, 2014—was such an occasion. Below is a portion of the inspirational sermon that Father Dean Gigicos shared on that day.

We hear many voices with advice during Great Lent. Some tell us to fast, others tell us to abstain, still others tell us to pray more, to attend the special services of Great Lent, to give to the needy, and so forth.

All of these things are important and have been preached for centuries, but this morning, I am going to offer you some different, practical, contemporary advice that may help you, spiritually, physically, and emotionally during these challenging times.

• Go to bed on time. • Get up on time so you can start the day unrushed in prayer. • Say NO to projects that won’t fit into your time schedule or that will compromise your spiritual health. • Delegate tasks to capable others. • Simplify and unclutter your life. • Remember that oftentimes, less is more. • Allow extra time to do things and to get to places. • Pace yourself. Spread out difficult projects over time. • Take one day at a time. • Separate worries from concerns. If a situation is a concern, find out what God would have you do and let go of the anxiety. If you can’t do anything about a situation, forget it and move on or as someone once said…if the horse is dead, get off. • Live within your budget. • Have back-ups; an extra car or house key, a friend you can call on in times of need, etc. • K.M.S.—Keep Mouth Shut: Before we say anything, ask ourselves is it the truth, is it necessary and is it nice? If it doesn’t meet these three criterions, K.M.S .—Keep Mouth Shut. This can prevent an enormous amount of trouble in our families, work place, and even here in our church. • Do something for the KID in you every day. • Carry a Bible with you to read while you’re waiting. • Eat right. • Get organized so everything has its place. • Write down thoughts and inspirations. • Every day, spend less time on the computer. • Every day, make time to be alone. • Make friends with Godly people. • Laugh. • Be kind to unkind people. • Talk less and listen more. • Remind yourself that you are not the general manager of the universe.

Each of these is important for our spiritual, physical, and emotional well being, but don’t ever forget that if Lent is to be Lent, there is one thing we must do before all else and that is to repent by turning from self and from our sins and turning to God.

I pray that during this Great Lent, we will so live so that we hear the words that the paralytic of today’s gospel heard, your sins are forgiven . 4 DAUGHTERS OF PENELOPE LUNCH AT ANTOINE'S

Daughters of Penelope members took a Saturday in March to get together during an “Afternoon Out” and enjoy lunch at Antoine’s Restaurant in the French Quarter. century Paschal Fan and working with the conservator to filfilll in the missing writing, "Ο Ιησούς οδοιπορεί μετά Λουκά και Κλεώπα "

Cleopas was one of two disciples walking from Jerusalem to Emmaus on the day of the Resurrection. The two men had heard of the empty tomb and were discussing events when a stranger asked them what they were discussing. They did not recognize Him, and Jesus rebuked them for their unbelief and told them the prophecies about the Messiah. They asked Jesus to join them for the evening meal. When He broke the bread, "their eyes were opened," and they recognized Him as the resurrected Jesus. Jesus immediately vanished.

Historic Photos Angeliki Catis and James Vlahos were the bride and groom on October 16, 1927, in the photo in last month’s issue of The Flame . We found the entry in our Sacramental Weddings Journal and identified the priest, Archimandrite Thalis Dimitriades!

Now, we need your help with this photo, which may have been a baptism. We believe the priest was Archimandrite Paisios Ferentinos. Could this be a baptism of twins or two babies on the same day? Father Ferentinos served 1911-1912 and 1921-1926.

On Sunday, March 30, 2014, the HOPE & JOY members engaged in a Lenten icon project honoring the Annunciation of the Theotokos and afterward enjoyed a Lenten lunch prepared by Vicki McCallef. The craft involved gluing images of the Annunciation icon onto wooden plaques, which were finished with a gloss sealer. Several parents and grandparents were present to lend their support.

The completed icons will be placed in the church for forty days to be blessed. For this reason all children are asked to bring their icons to church on Sunday, April 6, no later than Wednesday, April 9. The icons will be returned during the Sunday School and Greek School Closing Ceremonies on May 18.

GREEK SCHOOL STUDENTS TO DANCE AT GREEK FESTIVAL—OPA!

The Holy Trinity Cathedral Greek School students will once again perform at this year's Greek Festival. Although the practices are based around the times of Greek School, all children of the community ages 5-11 are invited to participate.

With Greek School Director Fay Kalergi’s approval, practices began Saturday, April 5, 2014, and will continue during Greek School sessions up to the weekend of the performances. Greek School hours are 10:00 am -12:00 pm each Saturday and 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm each Sunday. I shall practice with one group about 10:30 am and then switch to the next group around 11:00. Please keep in mind that this is a start and practice times may change. If your children do not attend Greek school, please plan to have them at church no later than 10:30 on Saturdays. If attending Sunday practice sessions, plan to have your children there by 12:00 pm.

There will be NO practices the weekend of April 12-13 and April 19-20. They will resume on April 26.

Our plan is to keep this as simple as possible but at the same time make sure our children learn and have FUN. In advance, I want to thank all parents for their support. It is up to us to continue this wonderful tradition, and I look forward to working with all of the children. ARE YOU ONBOARD FOR NEW STEWARDSHIP CAMPAIGN?

The Holy Trinity Cathedral Parish Council launched its new Adopt-A-Day stewardship campaign on Stewardship Sunday, March 16, 2014. This novel concept allows each steward of the church to designate a specific calendar date for his or her annual contribution in increments of $500 for a half day or $1,000 for a full day. The commemorative options are endless—anniversaries, birthdays, name days, etc.—and adoptions may be made publicly or anonymously.

Many parishioners completed their 2014 Commitment Cards and pledged amounts that qualified them for either Adopt-

A-Day or Adopt-Half-A-Day . Their commemorations are posted on two large boards hanging in the Coffee Room. As a reminder the $1,000 calculation is derived from basic salary, utility, and insurance expenses required to operate the community on a daily basis. With the financial stability and future subsistence of Holy Trinity Cathedral in the balance, participation in this program is paramount.

The Parish Council enthusiastically endorses the Adopt-A-Day program and asks that you prayerfully consider partaking in this unique endeavor, if you have not done so already. Stewards, who submitted their 2014 Commitment Cards prior to Stewardship Sunday in an amount listed above, may opt to designate it for a commemorative date. Or, they may increase their pledges to allow the opportunity to adopt a half or a full day. They are asked to call the Cathedral office at 504-282-0259 to discuss the various options. Your consideration is deeply appreciated.

A Heartfelt Thank You

Over three years ago the Holy Trinity Cathedral family lost one of its anchors, Gerald C. Pelias , who worked tirelessly for the Greek Orthodox Community up to the fateful day that he fell asleep in the Lord. Though his passing left a tremendous void, his spirit remains close to our hearts.

A year before his passing, Mr. Pelias donated to the Church his partial partnership interest in a multi-family development in Texas. Recently, Holy Trinity Cathedral received notice that the general partner of this project sold the development, and later the Church was mailed a check for $50,000.

Representing the Board of Trustees, I want to express the community’s gratitude for the foresight and generosity that Mr. Pelias exhibited and for his concern in the well being of the Church and its future. The lesson learned from this donation is much more valuable than the money received. We should emulate his example and never stop supporting our beloved Church.

Steven E. Psarellis, Holy Trinity Cathedral Parish Council President
