About the Cast
ABOUT THE CAST BURTON CURTIS (Watchman) has performed as Pierrot in Stephen Wadsworth’s productions of Molière’s Don Juan (McCarter Theatre, Shakespeare Theatre Company, The Old Globe, and Seattle Rep). He also portrayed Dumas in Wadsworth’s productions of Marivaux’s Triumph of Love (Long Wharf Theatre, Missouri Rep, and Seattle Rep). Burton originated the role of Eddie Wicket in the west coast premiere of Louis Broom’s Texarkana Waltz (Circle X Theatre Co., L.A. and the Empty Space Theatre, Seattle). He also created the dual roles of Brother Mills and Heathcliff in Wuthering! Heights! The! Musical! and performed in The Complete History of America (Abridged) (Empty Space and Actors Theatre of Louisville). Other roles include Tom in The Glass Menagerie (Tacoma Actors Guild) and Freddy in Noises Off (Village Theatre, Issaquah). He played the title role in Jillian Armenante’s production of Camille and Little Mary in a “gender blind” production of The Women (Annex Theatre, Seattle). Film credits include Crocodile Tears, Money Buys Happiness, and Great Uncle Jimmy as well as Gus Van Sant’s Even Cowgirls Get the Blues. Burton is also a director and choreographer and has received awards for his work on the stage from the Seattle Post Intelligencer and Seattle Weekly. He was listed by Backstage West among “100 Actors We Love.” He received his BFA in theater from Baylor University and now resides in Seattle. Burton is delighted to be making his Getty debut and is thrilled to be joining Mr. Wadsworth in yet another exciting project. The Representation of Suicide in the Cinema
The Representation of Suicide in the Cinema John Saddington Submitted for the degree of PhD University of York Department of Sociology September 2010 Abstract This study examines representations of suicide in film. Based upon original research cataloguing 350 films it considers the ways in which suicide is portrayed and considers this in relation to gender conventions and cinematic traditions. The thesis is split into two sections, one which considers wider themes relating to suicide and film and a second which considers a number of exemplary films. Part I discusses the wider literature associated with scholarly approaches to the study of both suicide and gender. This is followed by quantitative analysis of the representation of suicide in films, allowing important trends to be identified, especially in relation to gender, changes over time and the method of suicide. In Part II, themes identified within the literature review and the data are explored further in relation to detailed exemplary film analyses. Six films have been chosen: Le Feu Fol/et (1963), Leaving Las Vegas (1995), The Killers (1946 and 1964), The Hustler (1961) and The Virgin Suicides (1999). These films are considered in three chapters which exemplify different ways that suicide is constructed. Chapters 4 and 5 explore the two categories that I have developed to differentiate the reasons why film characters commit suicide. These are Melancholic Suicide, which focuses on a fundamentally "internal" and often iII understood motivation, for example depression or long term illness; and Occasioned Suicide, where there is an "external" motivation for which the narrative provides apparently intelligible explanations, for instance where a character is seen to be in danger or to be suffering from feelings of guilt.

Minju Kim Documentary Film (17 min.) 21 April 2018 “Race in Romance” is a short film about romantic intimacy between Asian female and non-Asian male. The basis of the film starts with a premise: “Having an intimate relationship with another person is seen as a decidedly private activity in our culture. Yet desire and passion for other people is shaped socially and culturally, and often reflects a person’s desire for self-realization and a social identity.” Our views of ourselves transform through the exchange and confirmation of our recognition.
