Als er één albumtrack is die de muzikale verscheidenheid van Gigaton het beste weergeeft, dan is dat Retrograde: na een rustig begin met akoestische gitaar en sfeervolle meerstemmige zang groeit het nummer langzaam uit tot een groots en galmend geheel, een storm van echo en elektronische geluiden... De natuur en de toekomst van onze planeet is een terugkerend thema op Gigaton, terwijl ook Trump niet wordt overgeslagen (de Amerikaanse president komt in Seven O’Clock voorbij onder de veelzeggende naam Sitting Bullshit). Nadat je het album hebt beluisterd, begrijp je waarom de bandnaam op de hoes in de lijn van een hartslag is verweven: de tijd tikt door, ook voor de planeet waar wij de zorg voor hebben. Daarnaast verklaart deze symboliek de muzikale veranderingen die Pearl Jam laat horen, zonder daarbij hun roots los te laten. Gigaton is een album met een boodschap, maar bovenal een album met verrassende muziek. This book pioneers research into the complex phenomenon named GAS from a variety of disciplines, including popular music studies and music technology, cultural and leisure studies, consumption research, sociology, psychology and psychiatry. The newly created theoretical framework and empirical studies of online communities and offline music stores allow the study to consider musical, social and personal motives, which influence the way musicians think about and deal with equipment. As is shown, GAS encompasses a variety of practices and psychological processes. In an often life-long endeavour, upgrading the rig is accompanied by musical learning processes in popular music.
