Venerable Master Hsing Yun's 2014 Letter to Dharma Protectors And
Issue No.33 January 2014 Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s 2014 Letter to Dharma Protectors and Friends Abbot and Dharma Transmission Ceremony for the 49th Generation of the Linji School was held with Ven. Hsin Bao as the new Head Abbot, and with Ven. Hui Chuan, Ven Hui Lun, Ven. Hui Kai, Ven. Hui Zhao, and Ven. Hui Feng as Deputy Abbots. It brings me much assurance and comfort to see the new leader of the Fo Guang Shan Order elected by system. My words for them were that Fo Guang Shan is humanistic, is open, is about team effort, and depends on a heritage. It is the entire order’s duty to create a new future, build a new milestone, and disseminate Humanistic Buddhism in every part of the world. On the same day, 72 monastics from all Five Continents including Ven. Ming Guang, Director of the Buddhist Association of Taipei, and Ven. Jing Yao, Director of the China International Offering Ceremony to All Buddhas became the Dharma Descendants. Last year, after I completed Buddhist Affinities Across One Hundred Years under the invitation of Academia Historica, I continued my narrations and published a new edition in April. The new Dear Dharma Protectors and Friends, book set consists of 160 million characters in Chinese, a total of 16 volumes that come with a Auspicious greetings! collection of 1,600 pictures. The book launch took place at the National Taiwan Library in Taipei. As we celebrate Fo Guang Shan’s 48th anniversary, I Later in October, the Simplified Chinese edition myself would also be turning 88 years old. -

The Future of North American Buddhism: An Appeal to Expand Humanistic Buddhism Study beyond Chinese Custom and Culture Ina Redd Denton Lay Dharma Lecturer, Buddha’s Light International Association na Denton holds a Master of Social Work degree (M.S.W.) from the I University of Illinois. Her professional career includes public and private human service administration, board and program development, community partnerships and executive consultation. She is a practicing Buddhist and a Certified Lay Dharma Lecturer and Vice Chairperson of the International Outreach Committee for BLIA (Buddha’s Light International Association, and a Member of Guang Ming Buddhist Temple, Orlando, Florida, USA). As a member of BLIA and proponent of Humanistic Buddhism, Ina shares the Dharma through teaching, lectures and interfaith activities. She also trains others to propagate Humanistic Buddhism by the design and implementation of workshops and symposia. As a westerner who had adopted a Chinese temple as her family (and their adoption of her), Ina strives to assure that people of all cultures and communities can find a spiritual home in the teachings of the Buddha and use those teaching to carry the passport of a “global citizen.” 2019 7 th Symposium on Humanistic Buddhism Thank you for this opportunity to share my experiences and thoughts about Humanistic Buddhism practices in the West and to make an appeal for diligent study that will result in a further embrace of those not of Asian background who come to our temples seeking solace, acceptance and a spiritual home. Gushan: the Formation of a Chan Lineage During the Seventeenth Century and Its Spread to Taiwan Hsuan-Li Wang Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2014 © 2014 Hsuan-Li Wang All rights reserved ABSTRACT Gushan: the Formation of a Chan Lineage During the Seventeenth Century and Its Spread to Taiwan Hsuan-Li Wang Taking Gushan 鼓山 Monastery in Fujian Province as a reference point, this dissertation investigates the formation of the Gushan Chan lineage in Fujian area and its later diffusion process to Taiwan. From the perspective of religion diffusion studies, this dissertation investigates the three stages of this process: 1. the displacement of Caodong 曹洞 Chan center to Fujian in the seventeenth century; 2. Chinese migration bringing Buddhism to Taiwan in the Qing dynasty (1644-1911) and 3. the expansion diffusion activities of the institutions and masters affiliated with this lineage in Taiwan during the Japanese rule (1895-1945), and the new developments of humanistic Buddhism (renjian fojiao 人間佛教) after 1949. In this spreading process of the Gushan Chan lineage, Taiwanese Buddhism has emerged as the bridge between Chinese and Japanese Buddhism because of its unique historical experiences. It is in the expansion diffusion activities of the Gushan Chan lineage in Taiwan that Taiwanese Buddhism has gradually attained autonomy during the Japanese rule, leading to post-war new developments in contemporary humanistic Buddhism. Master's Letter to Dharma Protectors and Friends -- 2009 Dear Dharma Protectors and Friends, Happy New Year to you all! May fruitful harvests be yielded through earnest cultivation. In time of the arrival of a new year, I cannot help but go over the past and look into the future,which is also my chance to share with everyone last year ’s propagation works we have done. On New Year ’s Day of 2008, Jian Zhen Library was completed after two and half years of construction, thereby allowing the opening ceremony of Jian Zhen Fo Guang Yuan Art Gallery and Yangzhou Forum to take place. Yangzhou is my homeland, and it is also an ancient cultural heritage. For the past thousand years, writers and poets left behind countless fine poems and pieces of works. During the great Qing dynasty, the Huizhou merchants and salt tradesmen gathered here and allowed the city to prosper. The rich history and civilization of this city has allowed it to become one of world ’s ten most bustling ancient capitals. With the completion of Jian Zhen Library and commencement of the Yangzhou Forum, the glory of Buddhist studies and culture in Yangzhou are bound to be revitalized. Under the leadership of curator Weng Zhenjin, the Yangzhou Forum was graced by the presence ofworld renowned speakers such as novelist Er Yue He, Qian Wenzhong, Ma Rui-fang, Yu Dan, Wang Bang-wei, Yan Chongnian, Kang Zhen, Cheng Shiyan, Charles HC Kao, Yu Kuangchung, Henry Lee, and Cui Yongyuan who delivered talks on Strange Tales of Liaozhai, Records of the Historian (Shi-ji), the Analects, Tang poems, Xuanzang ’s Journey to the West and so on. -

A Letter to Dharma Protectors and Friends in 2021 Dear Dharma protectors and friends, Auspicious greetings! “A man’s lifetime diligence brings a lush land of green; an ox’s ever-trodding hooves turn over million acres of gold.” In the Year of Ox, I, Hsin Bau, on behalf of the Fo Guang Shan Board of Directors and worldwide Fo Guang Shan Sangha, wish for everyone to “Cultivate a Heart that Blooms in All Seasons.” May we practice diligently for the blooming of wisdom all year round. In the early days of Fo Guang Shan, the founder Venerable Master Hsing Yun built a pathway over a valley—the Treasure Bridge—for visitors to reach Tsung-Lin University and the Great Compassion Shrine on the other side. In recent years, however, Venerable Master noticed that the flight of stairs leading to the bridge was not easily accessible by elderly devotees. As such, he instructed for the construction of a “new” Treasure Bridge to connect the Main Shrine directly to the Great Compassion Shrine. Upon its completion, Venerable Master joyfully said, “Though it is a very short bridge, it is a boundless pathway in life.” This exemplifies the bodhisattva spirit of giving as advocated by Humanistic Buddhism. In light of the COVID-19 global pandemic, showing us how insignificant human beings are in the face of nature, we humbly initiated the efforts of monastics and laity worldwide to collectively chant the Heart Sutra as a prayer for a swift end to the pandemic. Accumulating over 25 million recitations, all merits were dedicated to those affected. -

The Buddha states, “Both formerly and now, I teach only about affliction and suffering—and how to end it.” For over 2,000 years, Buddhist temples have developed in many different ways to suit the needs, available materials, and circumstances of each 1 time and place, yet one can still see the same foun- dational themes reflected in each temple’s symbol- ism, structure, and customs. This booklet will focus on Chinese Buddhist temples and the symbols and traditions they have developed, as well as how to understand and participate in the daily events of a modern temple. History of Buddhist Temples Buddhism began about 2,500 years ago and originat- ed from the teachings of a young prince, Siddhartha Guatama, who left his royal palace to lead a sim- pler, aesthetic lifestyle; upon attaining enlighten- ment, he became known as Sakyamuni Buddha and proceeded to spread his teachings for forty-nine years. Temples did not exist in the earliest days of Buddhism. During the Buddha’s time, monastics spent most of the year wandering from place to place, living on the edge of forests, yet close enough to towns so they could teach and receive food from almsgivers.
