2016 Opera Ball Program & Catalog HOT Opera Ball 2016 La Bohème presents PROGRAM AND AUCTION CATALOGUE Saturday, November 12, 2016 Sheraton Waikiki WELCOME Aloha and welcome to the 2016 Opera Ball – after the tremendous success of last year’s event, we are delighted to be back at the Sheraton Waikiki once again! We are so glad that you are here and very grateful for your support. Please help us to continue to bring the finest quality opera to Hawaii by supporting our Silent Auction – the more you bid the better it gets! Thanks to a generous matching gift from Jim and Lynn Lally you will have an opportunity to help support our award-winning education programs tonight, giving around 22,000 children and their families the chance to learn about and enjoy the magical world of Opera! This year’s Opera Ball is themed after Puccini’s romantic masterpiece La Bohème, set in the beautiful city of Paris. We hope that you were able to join us for our performances last month. And please join us for our remaining productions of the Season: Andre Previn’s operatic interpretation of Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire, Jake Heggie’s evocative Three Decembers, starring the great American mezzo-soprano, Frederica von Stade, and Offenbach’s popular masterpiece Tales of Hoffmann. And don’t miss the return of the three Samoan superstars, Sol3 Mio in January. An evening like this would not be possible without the hard work and dedication of many people. Thank you to our wonderful Opera Ball Committee, and to our fabulous Chair, Shelley Wilson, for making this year’s Opera Ball such a stunning success. Thank you too, to our table hosts, our underwriters, donors and contributors, and to you all for being here! Please enjoy the party! Riders of the Purple Sage, Arizona Opera February & March 2017 As her helper, the gunslinger Lassiter, Morgan Smith gave us a stunning performance of a role in which the character’s personality gradually unfolds and grows in complexity. Maria Nockin, Opera Today, 7 March 2017 On opening night in Tucson, the lead roles of Jane and Lassiter were sung by soprano Karin Wolverton and baritone Morgan Smith, who both deliver memorable arias. Smith plays Lassiter with vintage Clint Eastwood menace as he growls out his provocative maxim, “A man without a gun is only half a man.” Kerry Lengel, Arizona Republic, 27 February 2017 Moby-Dick, Dallas Opera November 2016 Morgan Smith brings a dense, dark baritone to the role of Starbuck, the ship's voice of reason Scott Cantrell, Dallas News, 5 November 2016 Morgan Smith, who played Starbuck, gave a stunningly powerful performance in this scene, making the internal conflict in the character believable and real. Keith Cerny, Theater Jones, 6 December 2016 First Mate Starbuck is again sung by baritone Morgan Smith, who offers convincing muscularity and authority. J. Robin Coffelt, Texas Classical Review, 6 November 2016 Morgan Smith finely acted in the role of second in command, Starbuck, and his singing was even finer. When Starbuck attempts to dissuade Captain Ahab from his fool’s mission to wreck vengeance on the white whale, the audience was treated to the evening's most powerful and passionate singing — his duets with tenor Jay Hunter Morris as Ahab in particular. Monica Smart, Dallas Observer, 8 November 2016 Madama Butterfly, Kentucky Opera September 2016 With a diplomatic air and a rich, velvety baritone, he upheld the title of Consul and caretaker in a fatherly way.

Yet her equally wide influence on the world of music was largely unrecognized until 1992, when the late Carlton Lowenberg published his groundbreaking study Musicians Wrestle Everywhere: Emily Dickinson and Music (Fallen Leaf Press), an examination of Dickinson's involvement in the music of her time, and a "detailed inventory" of 1,615 musical settings of her poems. The result is a survey of an important segment of twentieth-century music. In the years since Lowenberg's inventory appeared, the number of Dickinson settings is estimated to have more than doubled, and a large number of them have been performed and recorded. One critic has described Dickinson as "the darling of modern composers."1 The intriguing question of why this should be so has been answered in many ways by composers and others.

Closing Recital: The Music of (Un)told Stories Thursday, March 14 at 5 PM Colton Recital Hall, Fine Arts Building Program Notes Romance for Violin and Piano, Op. 24 Amy Beach (1867–1944) Dr. Ioana Galu, violin Dr. Susan Keith Gray, piano Amy Beach was arguably the earliest and most prominent American woman composer, becoming a leading representative of the late 19th century Romantic style. She was largely a self-taught composer and never studied abroad. As a child prodigy, she taught herself to read at the age of three and composed mentally several piano pieces at the age of four. She studied piano with her mother, and then with Ernst Perabo, debuting as a concert pianist at sixteen. After her marriage to the famous Boston surgeon Dr. H.H. A. Beach, she limited her solo concerts to charity events and focused all her energy to composing. She returned to professional public performances after the death of her husband in 1910, touring Europe and the US. She dedicated the “Romance” to the prestigious American violinist Maud Powell, and they premiered it together on July 6th 1893 during the World’s Columbian Exposition. The audience cheered enthusiastically at the conclusion of the piece, so much they had to repeat it. About that day, Maud Powell reminisced: “Our meeting in Chicago and the pleasure of playing together made a most delightful episode in my Summer’s experience. I trust it soon may be repeated.” Source: ALS Maud Powell to Amy Beach, 6 December 1993, Special Collections, University of New Hampshire Library. 'Moby Dick' a hit despite Absent Whale | ArtsSF ARTSSF ARTS ‘MOBY DICK’ A HIT DESPITE ABSENT WHALE February 11, 2019 Paul Hertelendy SAN JOSE—A very good American opera becomes a great experience through a highly theatrical production currently at Opera San Jose. This is Jake Heggie’s “Moby Dick” (2010) in a super-charged dramatic http://www.artssf.com/moby-dick-a-hit-despite-absent-whale/[2/18/2019 1:19:22 PM] 'Moby Dick' a hit despite Absent Whale | ArtsSF concept, thanks to both Kristine McIntyre stage director and Gene Scheer, who wrote the visionary libretto. McIntyre, a master of the art, should be giving boundless master classes to conservatories full of budding directors, even those in major prestige opera houses hard pressed to provide her sort of animation. Melville’s epic seafaring novel has hit the California Theater’s stage like a meteor, impacting despite a virtually all-male cast, and no waters in view at all. The OSJ voices are robust up and down the line, bursting the rafters of the theater (without electronic enhancement). The chorus of rough-and- tumble sailors lunges, bounces and whips around the stage vehemently in storm scenes, with some of the most elaborate choral movement cues ever. And their exuberance crosses the footlights again and again like repeat tsunamis. Yes, there are similarities to bigger-than-life dramas like Wagner’s “The Flying Dutchman.” Captain Ahab’s obsessions to capture the great white whale Moby Dick—who, in colossal attacks of gargantuan underwater stage fright, never actually appears— may not be realism at all; as in Orpheus or Icarus, it’s a parable of a hero obsessed with reaching the unattainable goal.
