Stock#: 35044 Map Maker: British Admiralty Date: 1866 Place: London Color: Uncolored Condition: VG+ Size: 25 x 38 inches Price: $ 475.00 Description: Rare example of this authoritative sea chart of the Gaspar Strait, Indonesia, a critical point of passage for navigation en route from Singapore to the Sunda Strait. This fine sea chart details the Gaspar Strait that runs between the islands of Bangka (called Banka on the chart) and Belitung (called Billiton on the chart), located off of the east coast of Sumatra, Indonesia. The treacherous passage was on the main shipping route from Singapore to the Sunda Strait (which runs between Java and Sumatra), which marked the entrance to the Indian Ocean. The strait was named 'Gaspar' after a Spanish sea captain who traversed the channel in 1724, on his way from Manila to Spain. As noted in the Great Britain Hydrographic Department's The China Sea Directory, vol. 1 (1878): "Many fine ships have been lost in Gaspar strait; not a few on the Alceste reef, from wrongly estimating their distance from the land; but the majority of instances from causes which might have been guarded against by the exercise of due care and judgment." This chart was then considered to be the authoritative guide for navigating these waters. -
Traces of Sino-Moslem Malay Descendants from Johor in Mento-Bangka
International Seminar and Workshop on Urban Planning and Community Development IWUPCD 2017: 18th-22nd September 2017 ISBN: 978-602- 5428-06- 7| Pg. 117-128 Shared Urban Heritage: Traces of Sino-Moslem Malay Descendants from Johor in Mento-Bangka Kemas Ridwan Kurniawan1, Muhammad Naufal Fadhil2, Sutanrai Abdilah3 1, 2, 3Department of Architecture, Universitas Indonesia [email protected] ABSTRACT This paper aims to trace back the descendants of Liem Tau Kian (a former minister of Chinese Emperor who saught asylum in Johor State) who established the town of Mento in the early 18th century. Mento is the latest pre-European colonial city in Bangka before the island occupied by British and Dutch in the early 19th century. These descendants migrated to Bangka due to the marriage between Palembang Sultan with one of Lim Thau Kian’s grand daughter, and also due to the interest in tin mining exploration. The issue raising on this paper concerns about shared urban heritage as the evidence of traces of relationship of these descendants (representing Sino-Moslem Malay from Johor) with people from Bangka, Palembang, Bugis and also Arab. The method to response on the above issue is through observation on historical physical relics including old burial grounds and buildings scattered in old Mento. The findings tells multicultural paradigm of these shared heritage that were practiced through inter-ethnic marriages, transit, and migration around Malay Peninsula and the archipelago. © 2017 IWUPCD. Wolters The Palembang Coast during the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Centuries I had always supposed that the metropolitan centers of Srivijaya, though probably dispersed according to their royal, social, commercial, or food-supplying functions, were in the neighborhood o f modern Palem bang city. I was among those influenced by the presence there of seventh century inscriptions, and I also assumed that the area where Bukit Seguntang stood had long ago possessed relig iou s prestige among Malays and contributed to the fame of the Palembang area. I did not believe that the capital of Srivijaya had always been in the Palembang area. Palembang enjoyed this status from the seventh century until the second half of the eleventh, when the Malay overlord*s center was moved to the Jambi area where it remained until turbulent events in the second half of the fourteenth century set in train the foundation of the Malay maritime empire of Malacca by a Palembang prince. After the shift in political hegemony from Palembang to Jambi, perhaps only officials in the Chinese court anachronistically continued to use the expression "San-fo-ch*iM ("Srivijaya") to identify the prominent polit ica l center on the southeastern coast of Sumatra. -

THE PROBLEM OF ARCHIPELAGIC STATES For the Philippines and Indonesia, adoption by the Third Law of the Sea Conference in the 1982 Law of the Sea Convention (1982 LOS Convention) of Articles 46-54 on "Archipelagic States," marked the cap- stone of the two countries' efforts to win international recognition for the archipelagic principle.' For both, acceptance by the international com- munity of this principle was an important step in their political develop- ment from a colony to a sovereign state. Their success symbolized independence from colonial status and their role in the shaping of the international community in which they live. It was made possible by their efforts, in the years before 1982, to negotiate a regional consensus on the need for the archipelagic principle, a consensus that eventually united the states of Southeast Asia at the Third Law of the Sea Conference (UNCLOS III). -

Liebner and David Van Dyke Abstract This paper reports on the life of the English Country trader Captain Frazer Sinclair leading up to and following the loss of the Forbes in the Karimata Strait in 1806. It examines the adventure and tenuous times of trading around the Indonesian archipelago after the fall of the VOC and subsequent transfer to the British. Included are the details of Captain Sinclair’s trading history, multiple prizes as a privateer, and shipwrecks. Running before a favourable easterly wind well into the third hour of 11 September 1806, the British country ship1 Forbes, out of Calcutta under Captain Frazer Sinclair, most unexpectedly “struck and stuck on a reef of rocks at the South entrance of the Straits of Billiton” (Figure 1).2 1 A ship which was employed in the local trade in Asia and the Far East was known as a Country Ship. These ships were owned by local shipowners in the east, many of which had long standing connections with the Company. ANNOTATED SUPPLEMENT TO THE COMMANDER’S HANDBOOK ON THE LAW OF NAVAL OPERATIONS NEWPORT, RI 1997 15 NOV 1997 INTRODUCTORY NOTE The Commander’s Handbook on the Law of Naval Operations (NWP 1-14M/MCWP S-2.1/ COMDTPUB P5800.1), formerly NWP 9 (Rev. A)/FMFM l-10, was promulgated to U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps, and U.S. Coast Guard activities in October 1995. The Com- mander’s Handbook contains no reference to sources of authority for statements of relevant law. This approach was deliberately taken for ease of reading by its intended audience-the operational commander and his staff. This Annotated Supplement to the Handbook has been prepared by the Oceans Law and Policy Department, Center for Naval Warfare Studies, Naval War College to support the academic and research programs within the College. After all administrative clearances for the German scientists, the security clearance and the harbour clearance in Bojonegara, Banten Bay, the cruise could start in the morning of 05 Oct 2012. As a result, the number of available days for observations was reduced (6 instead of 16) and the route had to be drastically shortened. Three German scientists had to cancel their participation due to the delayed departure and return dates. Purpose of cruise The original plan for this cruise was to perform carbon budget related measurements in oceanic, coastal, estuarine and riverine waters along a route from the Java Sea through the South China Sea into the Malacca Strait, up to north of Dumai, including the greatest rivers in Sumatra on this way. -
