Storch Although the sources for Roman history from Commodus ' to Constantine -' are notoriously inadequate, major historical trends are well-known including (1) an increased attention to the military and (2) the breakdown of traditional narrow formulas of the principate in favor of wider viewpoints inherent in the monarchy of Diocletian and Constantine :i. The imperial coinage most vividly mirrors these changes. Militarism of the age is reflected in developments connected with the legends PIETAS, FELICITAS, SALUS, SECURITAS, and PAX 4. Modification of precise formulas of the principate is indicated by the novel suggestions of «perpetuity» and «eternity» on the coins ¦"'. Indicative of the endless stream of virtues on the imperial coinage were piety, felicity, health, security, and peace. These suggestions appeared in connection with a variety of types but most frequently with a personification of the virtue in the form of a goddess who usually had a characteristic attribute (there were variations but, for example, Pietas was pictured at an altar or with little children, Securitas leaned on a column, Félicitas held a caduceus, Salus a snake, and Pax an olive branch). It is well-known that types and attributes were carefully chosen to present the goddess and the positive contribution made by the government to the citizens of the empire. Any alterations were the result of a deliberate decision which modified the message of the coin. Before the third century these virtues were, wilh few exceptions, not connected with military types and attributes. However, there was a general pattern of change during the period from Commodus through Constantine when the influence of the military became paramount. Piety was a persistent theme on the coinage of the empire ". Often the virtue is celebrated in the abstract, i.e., the legend PIETAS. Although this legend bore various types such as an altar or temple or a bust of the empress 7, most frequently pietas was personified. As piety in a religious sense she often appeared at an altar dropping incense, praying, or raising her hand sometimes holding a sacrificial box or sceptre. A piety in a familial sense she was shown touching the head of a little girl while holding a child, or, in a variation, while holding a flower bud and cornuco- piae to suggest the additional benefit of abundance. There were other pietas legends. The «Piety of the Augustus» was a favorite message of imperial propaganda. PIETAS AUGUSTI was connected with the type of a temple or priestly implements to denote the emperor's religious devotion to the gods or with the type of Mercury perhaps to suggest that through the ruler's piety commercewas flourishing (RIC IV/3,149, no.213). Occasionally the emperor himself was pictured. Titus and Domitian appeared holding a sceptre in clasped hands which were held, in turn, by a female (BMC II, 258, no. 177). Septimius Severus, in an act of piety, was veiled, holding a roll while sacrificing (RIC IV/1, 146, no.413). Aurelian, performing the same ceremony was accompanied by a priest (RIC V/l. 280, no. 138). Generally, however, the «piety of the Augustus» was represented by Pietas herself in her traditional activities 8. 6 Pietas often appears in the XII Panegyrici Latini as a virtue most desirable in a ruling prince (Pan. Ideally, a ‘good’ emperor was not just a competent general but also displayed other virtues. These imperial virtutes were propagated throughout the Roman Empire by means of imperial panegyric, decrees, inscriptions, biographies, and coins.1 On coinage in particular, juxtaposi- tions of AVG or AVGG with the virtue and/or the imperial portrait on the obverse would connect the virtues mentioned on the reverses directly with the emperor(s). Not all emperors emphasized the same virtues on their coinage. For example, Elagabalus seems not to have felt the need to stress virtus, whereas his successor Severus Alexander did try to convince the Roman people of his military prowess by propagating it on his coins. The presence or absence of particular virtues on coins issued by diffferent emperors brings us to the question as to whether an imperial canon of virtues existed. But before elaborating on this, the concept ‘virtue’ must be clarifijied.2 Modern scholars investigating imperial virtues on coinage consider vir- tues to be personifijications with divine power – in other words, deifijied abstractions or, as Fears puts it, ‘specifijic impersonal numina’.3 For many, the terms ‘personifijication’ and ‘virtue’ are interchangeable.4 Indeed, vir- tues can be considered personifijications. After his accession, he abandoned the expansionist policy of his predecessor Trajan and focused on securing the frontiers of the empire and on maintaining its stability. Of the utmost importance was the further integration and participation in his program of the peoples of the Greek East, especially of the Greek mainland and Asia Minor. Hadrian now invited them to become active members of the empire. By his lengthy travels and benefactions to the people of the region and by the creation of the Panhellenion, Hadrian attempted to create a second center of the Empire. Rome, in the West, was the first center; now a second one, in the East, would draw together the Greek people on both sides of the Aegean Sea. Thus he could accelerate the unification of the empire by focusing on its two most important elements, Romans and Greeks. Hadrian channeled his intentions in a number of ways, including the use of specific iconographical types on the coinage of his reign and religious language and themes in his interactions with the Greeks. Through analysis of material culture, historiography, and poetry that originated during the principate of Augustus, it becomes clear that each of these sources of evidence contributes to the public image projected by the leader whom Ronald Syme considered to be the first Roman emperor. The Ara Pacis Augustae and the Res Gestae Divi Augustae embody the legacy the Emperor wished to establish, and each of these cultural works contain significant references to the Vestal Virgins. The study of history Livy undertook also emphasized the pathetic plight of Rhea Silvia as she was compelled to become a Vestal. Livy and his contemporary Dionysius of Halicarnassus explored the foundation of the Vestal Order and each writer had his own explanation about how Numa founded it. The Roman poets Virgil, Horace, Ovid, and Tibullus incorporated Vesta and the Vestals into their work in a way that offers further proof of the way Augustus insinuated himself into the fabric of Roman cultural identity by associating his public image with these honored priestesses.

    Introduction Steve Worboys and I began this calendar in 1980 or 1981 when we discovered that the exact dates of many events survive from Roman antiquity, the most famous being the ides of March murder of Caesar. Flipping through a few books on Roman history revealed a handful of dates, and we believed that to fill every day of the year would certainly be impossible. From 1981 until 1989 I kept the calendar, adding dates as I ran across them. In 1989 I typed the list into the computer and we began again to plunder books and journals for dates, this time recording sources. Since then I have worked and reworked the Calendar, revising old entries and adding many, many more. The Roman Calendar The calendar was reformed twice, once by Caesar in 46 BC and later by Augustus in 8 BC. Each of these reforms is described in A. K. Michels’ book The Calendar of the Roman Republic. In an ordinary pre-Julian year, the number of days in each month was as follows: 29 January 31 May 29 September 28 February 29 June 31 October 31 March 31 Quintilis (July) 29 November 29 April 29 Sextilis (August) 29 December. The Romans did not number the days of the months consecutively. They reckoned backwards from three fixed points: The kalends, the nones, and the ides. The kalends is the first day of the month. For months with 31 days the nones fall on the 7th and the ides the 15th. For other months the nones fall on the 5th and the ides on the 13th.

In the second century b.c., Polybius, a Greek statesman and historian who lived much of his adult life in Rome, claimed that it was “scrupulous fear of the gods that kept the Roman commonwealth together” (6.56). A century or so later another expatriate Greek, Dionysius of Halicarnassus, was also impressed by the concern of Romans for religion. Writing about the second king of Rome, dionysius noted that as a result of Numa’s activities, Rome possessed more religious observances than any other city “Greek or non-Greek, even among those who thought of themselves as most god- fearing” (2.63). Needless to say, Romans themselves promoted the belief that fidelity to their oaths and treaties and their general reverence for the gods explained their imperial success. “the gods look kindly on these qualities, for it was by pietas and fides that Romans reached their present eminence” declared the consul Q. Marcius Philippus in 169 b.c.
