Note that IAU Symposium 366 (”The Origin of Outflows in Evolved Stars”) has been postponed until November next year, while in June 2021 there will be a 4-week programme of workshops on stellar astrophysics in the Gaia era, in Munich (Germany). See the announcements for both meetings at the end of the newsletter. Unfortunately our proposal for a Focus Meeting at next year’s IAU General Assembly was not successful. If you are new to DSC (Digital Setting Circles) you might want to start off by reading “A Digital Setting Circles Primer”. I’ve owned at least a half dozen different units, among them units from JMI, Celestron, Sky Commander and now the newest kid on the block; the Argo Navis. Coming out of Australia, the Argo makes use of modern technology and components, utilizing not one, but two Motorola 5206e ColdFire 40mhz 32bit CPU’s (the same family of CPU’s used in the popular Palm series of Personal Digital Assistants) 2mb of re-programmable flash memory, 512kb of static Ram, WildCard Innovations Argo Navis and 8kb of non-volatile Ram. It’s powered from 4 AA batteries or an 8 to 16V external source. When used with external power, the Argo offers an LCD heater function to assist in keeping the display functional and dew off. -

You have learnt that astronomical scales are very different from the ones that we encounter in our day-to-day lives. In astronomy, we are also interested in the motion and structure of planets, stars, galaxies and other celestial objects. For this purpose, it is essential that the position of these objects is precisely defined. In this unit, we describe some coordinate systems (horizon , local equatorial and universal equatorial ) used to define the positions of these objects. We also discuss the effect of Earth’s daily and annual motion on the positions of these objects. Finally, we explain how time is measured in astronomy. In the next unit, you will learn about various techniques and instruments used to make astronomical measurements. ONSTELLATIONS C Altitude Ruler The rotation of the Earth on its axis causes the stars to rise and set each evening. In addition, the orbit of the Earth around the Sun places different regions of the sky in our Horizon night-time view. The PLANISPHERE is an extremely useful tool for finding stars and 10 constellation in the sky, depicting not only what is currently in the sky but it also allows the 20 prediction of the rising and setting times of various celestial objects. 30 THE LAYOUT OF THE PLANISPHERE 40 50 The outer circumference of the dark blue circular disk (which is called the star wheel) you’ll notice that the wheel is divided into the 12 months, and that each month is divided into 60 individual dates. The star wheel rotates about the brass fastener, which represents the 70 North Celestial Pole. The frame of the planisphere has times along the outer edge. 80 Holding the planisphere on the southern corner you'll see "midnight" at the top. Moving Zenith counterclockwise, notice how the hours progress, through 1 AM, 2 AM, and so on through "noon" at the bottom. The hours then proceed through the afternoon and evening (1 PM, 2 PM, etc.) back toward midnight. Once you have the wheel set properly for the correct time and day, the displayed part represents what you see if you stand with the star and planet locator held directly over your head with the brass fastener toward the north. (Notice that the compass directions are also written on the corners of the frame.) Of course, you don't have to actually stand that way to make use of the Star and Planet Locator--this is just a description to help you understand what is displayed. -

Starshade in formation flight with a space telescope is a rapidly maturing technology that would enable imaging and spectral characterization of small planets orbiting nearby stars in the not-too-distant future. While performance models of starshade-assisted exoplanet imaging have been developed and used to design future missions, their results have not been verified from the analyses of synthetic images. Following a rich history of using community data challenges to evaluate image-processing capabilities in astronomy and exoplanet fields, the Starshade Technology Development to TRL5 (S5), a focused technology development activity managed by the NASA Exoplanet Exploration Program, is organizing and implementing a starshade exo- planet data challenge. The purpose of the data challenge is to validate the flow down of require- ments from science to key instrument performance parameters and to quantify the required accuracy of noisy background calibration with synthetic images. This data challenge distin- guishes itself from past efforts in the exoplanet field in that (1) it focuses on the detection and spectral characterization of small planets in the habitable zones of nearby stars, and (2) it devel- ops synthetic images that simultaneously include multiple background noise terms—some observations specific to starshade—including residual starlight, solar glint, exozodiacal light, detector noise, as well as variability resulting from starshade’s motion and telescope jitter. -

Pankenier Lehigh University Abstract: In ancient Chinese astral lore, the imperial nomenclature associated with the circumpolar stars in the Palace of Purple Tenuity points to the crucial importance of the north-pole in astrological, calendrical, and spiritual contexts. But preoccupation with this numinous region has a history far longer than the Chinese empire, founded in 221 BCE. This paper briefly surveys what is known about the pre-imperial history of the region of the ‘Northern Culmen,’ with particular reference to spiritual and metaphysical conceptions relating to the Northern Dipper, and to the void at the pivot of the heavens which lacked a pole star throughout much of the formative period of classical Chinese civilization. The discussion concludes with a hypothesis about the astral origins of the ancient form of the character used to denote the High God di. Chinese preoccupation with astronomical orientation has a very long history. Archaeological evidence from the 5th millennium BCE Neolithic cultures of North China shows that burials and dwellings were already being oriented with particular attention to the diurnal and seasonal variations in the Sun’s position.1 By the early Bronze Age in the early 2nd millennium BCE and the inception of early state formation, such concepts had progressed to the point where ritually and politically important structures were uniformly quadrilateral in shape, and cardinally oriented, with the longitudinal axis aligned with some precision in a north-south direction.2 Palatial structures and royal tombs from the earliest dynastic states in the 2nd millennium BCE, that is, Xia, Shang, and Zhou, consistently display such orientation. -

Various claims have been made about Babylonian innovations and the similarity between the Greek zodiac and the stories, dating from the third millennium BCE, of Gilgamesh, a legendary Sumerian hero who encountered animals and characters similar to those of the zodiac. Johannes Hevelius' Atlas of Constellations, Based on a Lifetime's
Johannes Hevelius’ atlas of constellations, based on a lifetime’s researches from this private observatory, was the finest of its time, and one of the few ever to be produced by a practicing astronomer rather than a cartographer. Hevelius, Johannes. Gedani : Typis Johannis-Zachariæ Stolli, 1690. 18 3/4 inches (400 mm), [20], 350, [2] pp. Johannes Hevelius’ (1611–1687) atlas of constellations was the finest of its time, and one of the few ever to be produced by a practicing astronomer rather than a cartographer., the Stellaburgum in his native Danzig (Gdansk), the work was published posthumously with an introduction by the author’s widow. It consists of three texts: a technological and methodological Prodromus Astronomiae (Spreads 19–103), the Catalogus Stellarum Fixarum, a catalogue of 1564 stars, arranged alphabetically by constellation, subdivided by stellar magnitude (Spreads 103–208), and the Firmamentum Sobiescianum (Spreads 5–17), named for his royal patron—Kepler had commemorated the Emperor Rudolf II in similar style in the title of Tabulae Rudolphinae. Its accompanying atlas of 54 double- page plates (Spreads 209–314) and 2 large folding planispheres depicting the northern and southern skies (Spreads 314 and 316). These engravings are the glory of the book, wonderful specimens of the Michelangelo approach to the night sky a Sistine ceiling of constellations. In producing his atlas, Hevelius, whose portrait appears at Spread 30, had the enormous advantage of having himself discovered more than 600 new stars from which to draw in devising a dozen new constellations. -

It consists of a humorous 24-minute show and educator’s package. The Orion Educator’s Guide is designed for Planetarians, Teachers, and parents. The information is researched, organized, and laid out so that the educator need not spend hours coming up with lesson plans or labs. This has already been accomplished by certified educators. The guide is written to alleviate the fear of space and the night sky (that many elementary and middle school teachers have) when it comes to that section of the science lesson plan. It is an excellent tool that allows the parents to be a part of the learning experience. The guide is devised in such a way that there are plenty of visuals to assist the educator and student in finding the Winter constellations.
