Scientific paper Creation and Analysis of the Yugoslav Rock Song Lyrics Corpus from 1967 to 20031 UDC 811.163.41’322 DOI 10.18485/infotheca.2019.19.1.1 Ljudmila Petkovi´c ABSTRACT: The paper analyses the pro- [email protected] cess of creation and processing of the Yu- University of Belgrade goslav rock song lyrics corpus from 1967 to Belgrade, Serbia 2003, from the theoretical and practical per- spective. The data have been obtained and XML-annotated using the Python program- ming language and the libraries lyricsmas- ter/yattag. The corpus has been preprocessed and basic statistical data have been gener- ated by the XSL transformation. The diacritic restoration has been carried out in the Slovo Majstor and LeXimir tools (the latter appli- cation has also been used for generating the frequency analysis). The extraction of socio- cultural topics has been performed using the Unitex software, whereas the prevailing top- ics have been visualised with the TreeCloud software. KEYWORDS: corpus linguistics, Yugoslav rock and roll, web scraping, natural language processing, text mining. PAPER SUBMITTED: 15 April 2019 PAPER ACCEPTED: 19 June 2019 1 This paper originates from the author’s Master’s thesis “Creation and Analysis of the Yugoslav Rock Song Lyrics Corpus from 1945 to 2003”, which was defended at the University of Belgrade on March 18, 2019. The thesis was conducted under the supervision of the Prof. Dr Ranka Stankovi´c,who contributed to the topic’s formulation, with the remark that the year of 1945 was replaced by the year of 1967 in this paper. -

Poznati u česnici Festivala "Omladina" koji će biti održan 07. i 08. decembra Postavljeno: 21.10.2012 Posle dve decenije pauze i prošlogodišnje retrospektive jednog od najpopularnijih muzi čkih omladinskih festivala u bivšoj Jugoslaviji, Festival "Omladina" Subotica od ove godine će ponovo organizovati muzi čko takmi čenje i okupiti mlade autore iz nekoliko zemalja regiona. Festival će biti održan 07. i 08. decembra pod sloganom "Razli čitost koja spaja". Nostalgija Kako je saopšteno na konferenciji za novinare, na konkurs festivala pristigla su 193 rada iz Srbije, Crne Gore, BiH, Hrvatske, Slovenije, Makedonije, Ma đarske, i Bugarske, od kojih je odabrano 25 kompozicija koje će se na ći na finalnoj ve čeri Festivala Omladina 2012. Direktor festivala, kompozitor Gabor Len đel, najavio je da će o najboljim u česnicima odlu čivati internacionalini stru čni žiri koji će činiti Olja Deši ć iz Hrvatske, Tomaž Domicelj iz Slovenije, Brano Liki ć iz BiH i Peca Popovi ć iz Srbije. Len đel je najavio da će na Festivalu biti dodeljeno šest nagrada. "Takmi čarski deo festivala održa će se 8. decembra u 19 časova u Hali sportova, a u revijalnom delu nastupi će 'Bajaga i instruktori'. Prate ći program festivala uklju čuje 'Ve če nostalgije' koncertom Ibrice Jusi ća, 7. decembra u 19 časova u Velikoj ve ćnici Gradske ku će", kazao je on. Razli čiti muzi čki pravci Umetni čki direktor Festivala Kornelije Kova č izjavio je da će na festivalu biti zastupljeni razli čiti muzi čki pravci - od regea, preko popa i bluza, do repa. 1 Human Rights in Transition – Serbia 2001 Introduction The situation of human rights in Serbia was largely influenced by the foregoing circumstances. Although the severe repression characteristic especially of the last two years of Milosevic’s rule was gone, there were no conditions in place for dealing with the problems accumulated during the previous decade. All the mechanisms necessary to ensure the exercise of human rights - from the judiciary to the police, remained unchanged. However, the major concern of citizens is the mere existential survival and personal security. Furthermore, the general atmosphere in the society was just as xenophobic and intolerant as before. The identity crisis of the Serb people and of all minorities living in Serbia continued. If anything, it deepened and the relationship between the state and its citizens became seriously jeopardized by the problem of Serbia’s undefined borders. The crisis was manifest with regard to certain minorities such as Vlachs who were believed to have been successfully assimilated. This false belief was partly due to the fact that neighbouring Romania had been in a far worse situation than Yugoslavia during the past fifty years. In considerably changed situation in Romania and Serbia Vlachs are now undergoing the process of self identification though still unclear whether they would choose to call themselves Vlachs or Romanians-Vlachs. Considering that the international factor has become the main generator of change in Serbia, the Helsinki Committee for Human Rights in Serbia believes that an accurate picture of the situation in Serbia is absolutely necessary. It is essential to establish the differences between Belgrade and the rest of Serbia, taking into account its internal diversities. -

MUSIC FOR THE INTERNATIONAL MASSES: AMERICAN FOREIGN POLICY, THE RECORDING INDUSTRY, AND PUNK ROCK IN THE COLD WAR by MINDY CLEGG Under the Direction of ALEX SAYF CUMMINGS, PhD ABSTRACT This dissertation explores the connections between US foreign policy initiatives, the global expansion of the American recording industry, and the rise of punk in the 1970s and 1980s. The material support of the US government contributed to the globalization of the recording industry and functioned as a facet American-style consumerism. As American culture spread, so did questions about the Cold War and consumerism. As young people began to question the Cold War order they still consumed American mass culture as a way of rebelling against the establishment. But corporations complicit in the Cold War produced this mass culture. Punks embraced cultural rebellion like hippies. -

Sažetak: Sama riječ Balkan vro je komplicirana jer se od poprilično neprecizne geografske odrednice pretvorila u politizirani pojam kojeg krase mnogi, vrlo često negativni atributi. Tijekom godina o Balkanu su se rađali mnogi zapadnjački mitovi koji su ga orijentarizirali i stavljali, a i danas ga stavljaju, na rub civiliziranog svijeta. Posebno je u tom svijetlu zanimljivo vidjeti položaj Hrvatske kao istovremeno balkanske i europske zemlje, s čvrstim argumentima za obje pozicije. Balkan je mjesto gdje su se kroz povijest uvijek rađali snažni identiteti. Do pred kraj prošlog stoljeća, na snazi je bio jugoslavenski identitet, da bi početkom 90ih došlo do snažnog rasta nacionalnih identiteta. Ipak, smirivanjem ratnim strasti, ponovno sve više na snagu stupa jedinstveni, balkanski identitet. Jak činitelj identiteta svih ljudi zasigurno je glazba i ove se činjenice očituju i u njoj. Upravo je glazba snažno pozivala ljude na jedinstvo svih Jugoslavena, zatim na rat i obranu kako hrvatske, tako i srpske kulture i vjere, a danas poziva na stvaranje jedne nove balkanske kulture i društva; kulture užitaka i alkohola s jedne, ali i društva koje živi u bijedi, siromaštvu i koje se treba boriti protiv političkih elita. -

Partisan Resistance Today? The Music of the National Liberation Struggle and Social Engagement Ana Hofman and Martin Pogačar They kept trying to smother the songs of resistance, but they did not smother them, ever, nor the spark of resistance, which was constantly smouldering here and there and burst into a flame of rebellion. (Hercigonja and Karakljajić 1962) Any interpretation of the past can only be a dissonant and dynamic, always political and without doubt a performative process. This spurs the emergence of and competition between alternative interpretations of the past that may also be understood as acts of opposition and even resistance to dominant and/or competing narratives. This is particu- larly clear when references to particular historical periods or events are problematised in daily political struggles and media discourses: recourse to alternate histories or the search for alternative visions of the past can thus be regarded as an attempt to devise a potential con- ceptual framework within which an articulation of alternative politics 21 (visions of the future) is possible. This carries with it certain (political) connotations that in the post-Yugoslav context are powered by the his- torical experience and perpetual reinterpretations of the national lib- eration struggle and antifascist resistance, as well as the entire period of socialist Yugoslavia – these periods have notably defined Yugoslav and contemporary social, (pop) cultural and political milieux, and the responses to it. In this essay, we discuss the shifting meanings and ascribed in- terpretations of the historical experience of the Yugoslav antifascist resistance as expressed through music. In an attempt to encourage this reflection on the musical expressions of the partisan resistance from a historical perspective, we primarily analyse scholarly works and media discourses and combine historical, musicological and cultural studies approaches.
