Krishna Rao Project Type: Children Learning Center Field Coordinator: Mr. Ch. Chennaiah Location: Medikonduru (Mandal), Supporting Donor Agency: Freiburg Guntur Region Number of Children: 36 Non - Residential (Profile: 40 boys & girls) Executive Summary Overall Status – Comments This Children Learning Center (CLC) is different by its target population, children of migrant families from Tamil Nadu. Parents of these children work at the local stone quarry as daily wage labourers. The center is special by teaching the children in Tamil Language. The Site In-charge is a Tamil speaking native who is capable of also speaking the local language Telugu. The center is running effectively and is covering the Andhra Pradesh state government syllabus. Significant Actions and Steps Taken A tempo traveller is allotted for transportation of children from their homes to school. Maintenance works are done at the site for convenient classroom learning. Four children who cleared their 6th and 7th grade obtained pass certificates from St. Patricks School under Rajiv Vidhya Mission Scheme of Government and they were also issued recognized transfer certificates to continue their secondary education at Omaluru Government School, Salem District, Tamil Nadu. With the same objectives, the title of the program has been changed from Village Learning Program (VLP) to Children Learning Center (CLC – Non Residential) to make the title more suitable to the purpose of the program. VRO | Half Yearly Report | April to September 2012 Site and Project Description The program was started in the year 1979 for Children of migrant families from Tamil Nadu state (those who are migrants working in stone quarries) for their mental, physical and intellectual development in a healthy and attractive Environment. All the School buildings are electrified and the transport facility is available. The local health worker visits the Centre twice in a month and gives necessary health assistance. The target population of the project is children within the age group of 6 – 12 years. The center is educating the children from 5 villages viz., Perecherla, Pedapalakaluru, China Palakaluru, Kalvaipedi and Kailasagiri. Presently, the strength of the center is 36. The parents work for some time on contract basis and move back to Tamil Nadu. This center enables the children to continue their schooling. Accomplishments & Future Plans Accomplishments during the reporting period For effective service delivery, the CLC staff underwent a couple of training programmes to improve their skills. During the reporting period, R. Dayani, Learning Guide, attended Spoken English Camp at Head Office, Pedakakani from 7th to 18th May. The resource persons, Br. Jayaraj and Br. Velangini, taught pronouns, conjunctions, parts of speech, active and passive voice, formation of sentences and report in English. Another Learning Guide, Ms. G. Yesu Dayama (teaches three days a week), participated in Spoken English Training in May at Phiragipuram which is 25 km. away from Guntur. The training was organized by Sunitha Computer Educational Institute. She learnt tenses, parts of speech, and report writing in English. The medium of instruction is Tamil and the local language Telugu is also taught at the school. Mr. L. Krishna Rao, in charge of the program teaches Tamil, while Ms. Nirmala from OAH (located in same campus) teaches Telugu now and then. Term - exams are conducted at the site to assess the progress of the children and the parents are informed about the same during monthly parents meeting. Good relationship is maintained with the local Primary Health Center (PHC), Medikonduru Mandal to obtain free medicine for the health needs of the children. In the same compound, Old Age Home (OAH) is running successfully. Both the center celebrates festivals and events together. In the reporting period, Independence Day, August 15th was observed and Mr. Bussiyasu, Inmate of OAH hoisted the national flag.
