SCHEDULE: 1/21 ‐ Prof. REUVEN GORDON, U. Victoria, Canada, “Challenging the Limits of Diffraction” Abstract: This talk will show ways of challenging three limits of optical diffraction. First, it will be shown how to focus light below the Abbe diffraction limit [1]. Next it will be shown how to squeeze light through small holes in a metal screen, allowing for 100% transmission in some cases, in contrast to Betheʹs aperture theory as found in textbooks [2,3]. This has interesting applications for biosensors. Finally, it will be shown how to optically trap nanoparticles with powers orders of magnitude smaller than required by conventional by Rayleigh scattering formulations [4], which has interesting applications for manipulating viruses and quantum dots. Theoretical and experimental results will be presented. (1) R. Cumulated Bibliography of Biographies of Ocean Scientists Deborah Day, Scripps Institution of Oceanography Archives Revised December 3, 2001. Preface This bibliography attempts to list all substantial autobiographies, biographies, festschrifts and obituaries of prominent oceanographers, marine biologists, fisheries scientists, and other scientists who worked in the marine environment published in journals and books after 1922, the publication date of Herdman’s Founders of Oceanography. The bibliography does not include newspaper obituaries, government documents, or citations to brief entries in general biographical sources. Items are listed alphabetically by author, and then chronologically by date of publication under a legend that includes the full name of the individual, his/her date of birth in European style(day, month in roman numeral, year), followed by his/her place of birth, then his date of death and place of death. Entries are in author-editor style following the Chicago Manual of Style (Chicago and London: University of Chicago Press, 14th ed., 1993). Citations are annotated to list the language if it is not obvious from the text. Annotations will also indicate if the citation includes a list of the scientist’s papers, if there is a relationship between the author of the citation and the scientist, or if the citation is written for a particular audience. This bibliography of biographies of scientists of the sea is based on Jacqueline Carpine-Lancre’s bibliography of biographies first published annually beginning with issue 4 of the History of Oceanography Newsletter (September 1992). It was supplemented by a bibliography maintained by Eric L. Mills and citations in the biographical files of the Archives of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UCSD. -

A person versatile in more than one field is categorized under the field which reflects his greatest achievement. Scientists who were more effective in the diffusion of knowledge than in original and creative work, appear in the tables as "Educators." Each bibliographic entry includes author, title, publisher, place and data of publication, and Library of Congress classification. An index of names and list of selected reference tools containing biographies concludes the bibliography. Libraries are often measured by the number of books on the shelves, the number of electronic downloads from the website or the number of instructional sessions. These are certainly valid and important numbers to showcase the number of STRATEGIC DIRECTIONS 2012 - 2017 DIRECTIONS 2012 STRATEGIC outputs of an organization. However, libraries are selling themselves short by so simply describing what we do with these arbitrary numbers. The true value of a library is in the moments where it can change a person’s life. Libraries are where people learn and Build learning environments in physical in physical Build learning environments and cyber spaces. ENVIRONMENTS 01 02 form new insights – they are a key component to intellectual health and the place on an academic campus that can inspire people to think differently. Information can change someone’s worldview as people not only discover new knowledge, but begin to think differently about the world that surrounds them. Unfortunately, these stories are not easily categorized and mea- sured by numbers in an annual report. What we have and offer 03 04 - resources, environments and guidance can be counted and compared. However, these other moments of transformation are often overlooked or forgotten – sometimes because a person is not physically in a library, but instead accessing library-provided materials online when they experience inspiration or a change in thinking. The Libraries’ successes may not be visible and assumed, but I hope that by browsing our annual report you also begin to think differently about how CONNECTIONS libraries impact your life. -

NATIONAL ACADEMY OF SCIENCES OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA BIOGRAPHICAL MEMOIRS VOLUME XIII SECOND MEMOIR BIOGRAPHICAL MEMOIR OF HENRY ANDREWS BUMSTEAD 1870-1920 BY LEIGH PAGE PRESENTED TO THE ACADEMY AT THE ANNUAL MEETING, 1929 HENRY ANDREWS BUMSTEAD BY LIUGH PAGE Henry Andrews Bumstead was born in the small town of Pekin, Illinois, on March 12th, 1870, son of Samuel Josiah Bumstead and Sarah Ellen Seiwell. His father, who was a physician of considerable local prominence, had graduated from the medical school in Philadelphia and was one of the first American students of medicine to go to Vienna to complete his studies. While the family was in Vienna, Bumstead, then a child three years of age, learned to speak German as fluently as he spoke English, an accomplishment which was to prove valuable to him in his subsequent career. Bumstead was descended from an old New England family which traces its origin to Thomas Bumstead, a native of Eng- land, who settled in Boston, Massachusetts, about 1640. Many of his ancestors were engaged in the professions, his paternal grandfather, the Reverend Samuel Andrews Bumstead, being a graduate of Princeton Theological Seminary and a minister in active service. From them he inherited a keen mind and an unusually retentive memory. It is related that long before he had learned to read, his Sunday school teacher surprised his mother by complimenting her on the ease with which her son had rendered the Sunday lesson. It turned out that his mother made a habit of reading the lesson to Bumstead before he left for school, and the child's remarkable performance there was due to his ability to hold in his memory every word of the lesson after hearing it read to him a single time. -
