At each stage, be it big-man leadership, chiefdom or state based society I examine how power and social complexity increases and what were the reasons behind such a phenomenon. I start with some few considerations regarding developments during the Neolithic and Early Bronze Age and then I jump to the question of the “coming of the Greeks.” I argue that any explanation of the political life shall start from early stages; it is only then that we might get a measured insight in respect to the workings of political and social institutions. -

Trojan Women: Introduction 1. Gods in the Trojan Women Two gods take the stage in the prologue to Trojan Women. Are these gods real or abstract? In the prologue, with its monologue by Poseidon followed by a dialogue between the master of the sea and Athena, we see them as real, as actors (perhaps statelier than us, and accoutered with their traditional props, a trident for the sea god, a helmet for Zeus’ daughter). They are otherwise quite ordinary people with their loves and hates and with their infernal flexibility whether moral or emotional. They keep their emotional side removed from humans, distance which will soon become physical. Poseidon cannot stay in Troy, because the citizens don’t worship him any longer. He may feel sadness or regret, but not mourning for the people who once worshiped but now are dead or soon to be dispersed. He is not present for the destruction of the towers that signal his final absence and the diaspora of his Phrygians. He takes pride in the building of the walls, perfected by the use of mason’s rules. After the divine departures, the play proceeds to the inanition of his and Apollo’s labor, with one more use for the towers before they are wiped from the face of the earth. Nothing will be left. It is true, as Hecuba claims, her last vestige of pride, the name of Troy remains, but the place wandered about throughout antiquity and into the modern age. At the end of his monologue Poseidon can still say farewell to the towers. -

La nouvelle Reine, Marie-Antoinette, s’est tellement entichée de Grétry qu’elle devient la marraine de sa troisième fille en 1774, justement prénommée Antoinette. En six ans à peine, le jeune liégeois arrivé inconnu à Paris en est devenu le principal compositeur, stipendié par la cour… André-Ernest-Modeste Grétry Mais la représentation d’Iphigénie en Aulide de Gluck, au printemps 1774, est une 1741-1813 déflagration de modernité, et lorsque juste après, Céphale et Procris est présenté à l’Académie Royale de Musique, le public est déçu de son manque d’audace. Roisman ANHOOD in archaic and classical Greece-as in modern times-is generally manifested not so much in relation M ships with women as in relationships with other men, especially in the relationship between father and son. The Greek male is expected to produce sons who will continue his oikos (e.g. Soph. Ant. 641-45; Eur. Ale. 62lf, 654-57). Further, as Hesiod makes clear, sons should resemble their fathers in both looks and conduct, especially the latter (Op. 182,235; ef Ii. 6.476-81; Theophr. Char. 5.5). Such resemblance earns the father public esteem and proves his manliness; the lack of it may be cause for disparagement and calls his manliness into question. 1 We learn from Ajax and Philoctetes that Sophocles follows the Hesiodic imperative that sons should resemble their fathers in their natures and their accomplishments. Ajax sees himself as an unworthy son, having lost Achilles' arms to Odysseus, and prefers to commit suicide rather than face his father, Telamon, who took part in Heracles' expedition to Troy and got Hesione, the best part of the booty, as a reward (Aj. 430-40,462-65, 470ff, 1300-303; Diod. 4.32.5). At the same time, he expects his son, Eurysaces, to be like himself in nature, valor, and in everything else ('ttl.~' aA.A.' OIlOlO~, Aj. 545-51). Sophocles' Philoctetes, on the other hand, presents the strug gle between Odysseus and Philoctetes for the 'paternity' of Neoptolemus, as each tries to mold the young man in his own 1 Even in contemporary Greece the intense male rivalry for proving oneself takes place among men alone, while women and flocks serve as the object of this rivalry. -

Senecan tragic characters and choruses often echo the language of Virgil’s epic in provocative ways; these constitute a contrastive reworking of the original Virgilian contents and context, one that has not to date been fully considered by scholars. -

First, who exactly are they? Second, what dramatic personality and functions does Aeschylus give to them, and are these congruent with what we might, or do, expect? Even with the appearance of Garvie’s fine and thorough commentary on Choephori,1 there is nothing approaching consensus on either of these questions. I think it possible to settle the first and more concrete one and to advance understanding of the second, though in an unsettling way. At the end of the paper, I shall offer an opinion on how the particular investigation of the Choephori chorus may relate to the further and even more basic question: in what sense, if at all, is there a unified choral voice throughout the Oresteia or throughout Aeschylus? * * * * * First, then, identity. The chorus of Choephori consist either of unspecified foreign slave women or of specifically Trojan slave women, but which? Commentators and critics are split. As a sample, Verrall, Tucker, Wilamowitz, Lattimore are for unspecified generic foreign slave women; Conington, Sidgwick, Rose, Lloyd-Jones for specifically Trojan slave women.2 And many scholars, no matter how detailed their discussion of the play and its chorus—Lebeck, Taplin, and Garvie3 may serve as examples—, make no real attempt at a firm identification at all. -

THE FRENCH ROMANTIC DRAMA AND ITS RELATIONS WITH ENGLISH LITERATURE I THE CONFLICT BETWEEN THE FRENCH CLASSICAL AND THE SHAKESPEARIAN DRAMA N the days which preceded the Entente Cordiale, the I relations between France and England, as is well known, were on the whole anything but cordial. For generations, almost for centuries, the two nations had stood “hand on hilt” in the words of Kipling, and “ready to strike first”. Few were the subjects on which they could agree, and if by chance they were of one mind, and happened to think that a certain thing was good in itself and its acquisition desir- able, they soon were ready to go to war about it. Their very pastimes failed to provide a ground for mu- tual toleration and understanding. The drama itself became the subject of endless controversy. This can easily be un- derstood. Each nation had early in its history achieved a supremacy of its own in the field of dramatic literature. By the end of the sixteenth century England had Shake- speare; early in the seventeenth century France had the first of her three great dramatists, Corneille, Racine, Moliire, who were soon to place the French stage in a position of ‘A series of three lectures delivered at the Rice Institute on January 29, February 5, and 12, 1928, by Marcel Moraud, AgrCgd de I’UniveraitC de France, Professor of French at the Rice Institute. 75 76 The French Romantic Drama undisputed authority on the continent. Not only was each of the two nations unwilling to surrender its supremacy, but neither could imagine why the dramatists of the other nation should be entitled to any celebrity. -

(Sophocles, Oedipus at Colonus 1542– 431) Sophocles’s Oedipus at Colonus ends with his most famous character walking serenely through the central doors of the stage building (skēnē) in the Theater of Dionysus and into the grove of the Eumenides.
