  • Diploid Males and Colony-Level Selection in Formica Ants
Ethology Ecology & Evolution 6: 221-235. 1994 Diploid males and colony-level selection in Formica ants P. PAMILO ', L. SUNDSTRÖM 2, W. FORTELIUS 2-3 and R. ROSENGREN 2 1 Department of Genetics, Uppsala University, Box 7003, 750 07 Uppsala, Sweden 2 Department of Zoology, University of Helsinki, 00100 Helsinki, Finland 1 Tvcirniimte Zoological Station, University of Helsinki, 10900 Hanko, Finland Received 17 Julv 1993. accepted 30 November 1993 Il is suggested thai ihc evolution of polyandry by social hymenopteran queens is caused by colony-level selection, either because polyandry affects the distribution of non-functional diploid males in colonies (the load hypothesis) or because it increases the genetic diversity of the worker force (the diversity hypothesis). Diploid males thai arise from fertilized eggs thai are homozygous at the Sex-determining locus (or loci) are inviable or infertile. Models of the load hypothesis analysed in this study suggest thai slow growth and high mortality of colonies with diploid males favour single mating by queens. The longer the peri od ol colony growth (the period with selective differences) and the heavier the mortality, the stronger is the selection for monandry. The load hypothesis also predicts an association between monogyny and monandry. In contrast, the diver sity hypothesis predicts an association between monogyny and polyandry, as multiple mating offers a way by which a monogynous colony could increase its genelic heterogeneity. Up to 10% of all males are diploid in species and populations of Formica Downloaded by [] at 11:54 04 February 2015 ants with highly polygynous colonies (/-". aqnilonia, F. polyctena, F.

  • The Finnish Archipelago Coast from AD 500 to 1550 – a Zone of Interaction
The Finnish Archipelago Coast from AD 500 to 1550 – a Zone of Interaction Tapani Tuovinen [email protected], [email protected] Abstract New archaeological, historical, paleoecological and onomastic evidence indicates Iron Age settle- ment on the archipelago coast of Uusimaa, a region which traditionally has been perceived as deso- lated during the Iron Age. This view, which has pertained to large parts of the archipelago coast, can be traced back to the early period of field archaeology, when an initial conception of the archipelago as an unsettled and insignificant territory took form. Over time, the idea has been rendered possible by the unbalance between the archaeological evidence and the written sources, the predominant trend of archaeology towards the mainland (the terrestrical paradigm), and the history culture of wilderness. Wilderness was an important platform for the nationalistic constructions of early Finnishness. The thesis about the Iron Age archipelago as an untouched no-man’s land was a history politically convenient tacit agreement between the Finnish- and the Swedish-minded scholars. It can be seen as a part of the post-war demand for a common view of history. A geographical model of the present-day archaeological, historical and palaeoecological evi- dence of the archipelago coast is suggested. Keywords: Finland, Iron Age, Middle Ages, archipelago, settlement studies, nationalism, history, culture, wilderness, borderlands. 1. The coastal Uusimaa revisited er the country had inhabitants at all during the Bronze Age (Aspelin 1875: 58). This drastic The early Finnish settlement archaeologists of- interpretation developed into a long-term re- ten treated the question of whether the country search tradition that contains the idea of easily was settled at all during the prehistory: were perishable human communities and abandoned people in some sense active there, or was the regions.

  • A Brief History of Six Ancient Finnish Castles
1 (2) 8.1.2014 A brief history of six ancient Finnish castles The Ancient Castles stamp booklet presents the following six ancient Finnish castles, each of which has its own interesting history. Suomenlinna Construction of Viapori Castle was started in 1748 by A. Ehrensvärd. The fortress surrendered to the Russians in 1808, and when Finland became independent, it was named Suomenlinna. In the early years of independence, it served as prison camp and closed military zone. The area started to be developed for tourism in the late 1950s, and now Suomenlinna, which lies directly in front of Helsinki, has become a popular tourist destination and is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Further information: www.suomenlinna.fi/en Häme Castle Häme Castle was founded in the late 1200s and was converted into a residential castle in the 1700s. The castle served as a prison from 1837 to 1972. Restoration work began in 1953 and was completed in 1988. Today, the castle serves as a museum and hosts a variety of exhibitions and events. Further information: www.nba.fi/en/museums/hame_castle Raseborg Castle Raseborg Castle was built in the 1370s in Snappertuna. The castle, which had been used to defend Swedish trade interests, was abandoned in the 1550s and it fell into decay. Restoration work began in the late 1800s and continued until the end of the 1980s. The castle is now open to the public during the summer. Further information: www.raseborg.org/slott/eng/ Kastelholm Castle Kastelholm was originally built to defend the Åland Islands in the late 1300s.

With about equal shares in terms of people involved, Aronia pursued applied projects and science. The new Coastal Zone Research Team (ACZRT) began the work of the second funding cycle, and the results of this and the other pursuits can be found in this report. The basic funding Aronia enjoys seems stable enough for predicting that the good results of 2013 in terms of science, applied science, teaching and tuition will be replicated over the next few years. Some of the applied projects face termination since the project funding cycle of the EU and some other sources sets limits, but given the good results achieved, new projects for the next cycle will emerge, most likely the- matically linked to the current projects.
