COMPETITION INVITATION 1. Competition Invitation 1.1 Organisers, Nature and Purpose of the Competition During 2011, the municipality of Sipoo will host an open international planning competition for a sustain- able community in Sibbesborg. The competition will be organised in co-operation with the Aalto University Department of Architecture, the Finnish Association of Architects, RYM Ltd and the OSKE Centre of Expertise, and is supported, through its sustainable community programme, by Tekes, the Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innovation. The competition area is situated in the municipality of Sipoo, around Söderkulla urban district and the Sipoon- lahti area. The aim of the competition is to put forward a plan for a community of up to 70,000 – 100,000 resi- dents, with the main emphasis on the centre. In addi- tion to this, the target is to outline the first steps in the extensive implementation process. The competition and its scope are based on the Sipoo 2025 Master Plan and the municipality’s expansion strategy which is a response to the overall development targets for the Helsinki region, an area which is one of the fastest growing urban regions within the European Union. The development of Sibbesborg, which lies at the heart of the region’s eastern development corridor, will be based on future rail connections. The development of the area as a compact and functioning community, building on its powerful landscape and cultural identity, Location of the competition area within Finland/Europe. offers a rich opportunity for the region as a whole. • Diploid Males and Colony-Level Selection in Formica Ants
Ethology Ecology & Evolution 6: 221-235. 1994 Diploid males and colony-level selection in Formica ants P. PAMILO ', L. SUNDSTRÖM 2, W. FORTELIUS 2-3 and R. ROSENGREN 2 1 Department of Genetics, Uppsala University, Box 7003, 750 07 Uppsala, Sweden 2 Department of Zoology, University of Helsinki, 00100 Helsinki, Finland 1 Tvcirniimte Zoological Station, University of Helsinki, 10900 Hanko, Finland Received 17 Julv 1993. accepted 30 November 1993 Il is suggested thai ihc evolution of polyandry by social hymenopteran queens is caused by colony-level selection, either because polyandry affects the distribution of non-functional diploid males in colonies (the load hypothesis) or because it increases the genetic diversity of the worker force (the diversity hypothesis). Diploid males thai arise from fertilized eggs thai are homozygous at the Sex-determining locus (or loci) are inviable or infertile. Models of the load hypothesis analysed in this study suggest thai slow growth and high mortality of colonies with diploid males favour single mating by queens. The longer the peri od ol colony growth (the period with selective differences) and the heavier the mortality, the stronger is the selection for monandry. The load hypothesis also predicts an association between monogyny and monandry. In contrast, the diver sity hypothesis predicts an association between monogyny and polyandry, as multiple mating offers a way by which a monogynous colony could increase its genelic heterogeneity. Up to 10% of all males are diploid in species and populations of Formica Downloaded by [] at 11:54 04 February 2015 ants with highly polygynous colonies (/-". aqnilonia, F. polyctena, F.

  • URBAN FORM in the HELSINKI and STOCKHOLM CITY REGIONS City Regions from the Perspective of Urban Form and the Traffic System
REPORTS OF THE FINNISH ENVIRONMENT INSTITUTE 16 | 2015 This publication compares the development of the Helsinki and Stockholm AND CAR ZONES TRANSPORT PUBLIC DEVELOPMENT OF PEDESTRIAN, CITY REGIONS AND STOCKHOLM THE HELSINKI URBAN FORM IN city regions from the perspective of urban form and the traffic system. Urban Form in the Helsinki The viewpoint of the study centres on the notion of three urban fabrics – and Stockholm City Regions walking city, transit city and car city – which differ in terms of their physical structure and the travel alternatives they offer. Development of Pedestrian, Public Transport and Car Zones Based on the results of the study, growth in the Stockholm region has been channelled inward more strongly than in Helsinki, which has increased the structural density of Stockholm’s core areas. During recent years, however, Panu Söderström, Harry Schulman and Mika Ristimäki the Helsinki region has followed suit with the direction of migration turning from the peri-urban municipalities towards the city at the centre.
