    HOW TO READ THE BILL REID BILL by JEFFREY DECLOEDT B.A., The University of British Columbia, 2004 A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS in The Faculty of Graduate Studies (Art History) The University of British Columbia (Vancouver) October 2008 ©Jeffrey DeCloedt, 2008 11 ABSTRACT This thesis argues that the First Nations and their material culture have been used as tropes in the construction of national symbols on Canadian money. The twenty dollar bill from the 2004 series of Canadian banknotes, Canadian Journeys, was the impetus for this inquiry. The art of Bill Reid is featured on this banknote. Reid is an artist who identifies, on his mothers side, with the Haida First Nations and his art takes its themes and style from the Haida crest imagery. The implications of utilizing a First Nations artist on a Canadian banknote becomes problematic when considering the antagonistic historical relationship Canada has had with the First Nations and the multiplicity of unresolved land claims. Therefore, I ask, how this Bill Reid banknote should be read. In answering this question I have divided this thesis into three parts. First, I analyze a historical precedent for this contemporary banknote. The 1870 two dollar bill is useful for it both gives an example of the use of First Nations as a trope in representing the nation and it helps expose the importance of money as a national symbol at the time when Canada was struggling to come together as a modern nation. In the next section I analyze the Bill Reid bill as both a part of a symbolic construction of nation and as a material practice which has regional or territorial implications.

Brail, 1910-1992 Mr. Max Brail, a lifetime collector with a keen passion and enthusiasm for his collecting, often demonstrated through his openness in sharing his achievements and knowledge through his many presentations, exhibitions and writings at various exhibitions and local shows. He began his life in 1910 in a small Michigan town known as Greenville. As a young man he located to Jackson, Michigan and worked in the dry-cleaning business as a driver and salesman. In a few short years he would own his own dry-clean- ing operation. In 1937 he married Lucille and she would accompany him on most of his numismatic journeys throughout their lifetime. With his success in business, he built and leased a McDonald’s in Jackson. In the late 1920s he began actively collecting United States coins purchasing items he desired from the Chapman Brothers, B. Max Mehl, Albert Grinnell and other well-known dealers, and auction houses as well as U.S. commemoratives directly from the issuing authorities. During this time his primary collecting interest was United States coinage and Michigan National Bank Notes. During 1944, at the age of 34, Max became life member No. 92 in the American Numismatic Association; twenty-three years later he would be given the same life membership number in the Canadian Numismatic Association. Throughout the decades he would serve on the boards of numerous regional, state and local clubs and organizations.

In 1982, the Royal Canadian Mint produced 1/4 and 1/10 ounce coins, in 1986 1/2 ounce and in 1993 coins with a value of 1/20 ounce. Between 1994 and 1996 there was also a 1/15 ounce Maple Leaf. The actual gold content these coins is 1.0 troy ounce or 31.103 grams and coins are minted with a face value of $1, $5, $10, $20 or $50 and are legal tender. The Canadian maple leaf gold coin was originally minted at .999 purity, but in 1982 the Royal Canadian Mint produced a .9999 pure gold coin. However due to the lack of hardening metals these .9999 gold coins are soft and prone to scratch marks if not handled with care. The biggest ever sold Maple Leaf was a 100 kg, with an official value of 1 Million Canadian Dollars.
