Loss of tone-quality is caused by the flattening of the sounding-board through the action of the atmosphere and the great downward pressure of the strings. The Mason & Hamlin Tension Resonator Permanently preserves the crown, or arch, of the sounding-board, and gives to the Mason & Hamlin piano a superior quality of tone and a tone which is inde- structible. A Technical Description in "The Scientific American" of October 11, 1902, CONTAINS THE FOLLOWING: "One imperfection in the modern pianoforte, found even in the instruments made by standard makers, has been the loss in tone quality, due to the inability of the sounding board to retain its tension. The problem seems at last to have been satisfactorily solved by a most simple and ingenious construction embodied in the pianos of Mason & Hamlin of Boston, U.S.A." Peter Tschaikowsky (Born at \'otkinsk, in the government of ^'iatka, Russia, May 7,* 1840; died at St Petersburg, November 6, 1S93.) This symphony is in four movements: I. Adagio, B minor, 4-4. Allegro non troppo, B minor, 4-4 II. Allegro con grazia, D major, 5-4. III. Allegro, molto vivace, G major, 4-4 (12-8). IV. Finale: Adagio lamentoso, B minor, 3-4. Tschaikowsky embarked at New York in May, 1891, for Hamburg. The steamer was the "Ftirst Bismarck." His diary tells us that on his Aoyage he made sketches for a sixth symphony. (The Fifth was first performed in 1888.) The next mention of this work is in a letter dated at Vichy, June 30, 1892, and addressed to W. Naprawnik: "After you left me, I still remained at Klin about a month, and sketched two movements of a symphony. Here I do absolutely nothing; I have neither inclination nor time. Head and heart are empty, and my mental faculties are concentrated wholly on my thoughts. I shall go home soon." He wrote his brother in July that he should finish this symphony in Klin. From IClin he wrote Serge Taneieff, the same month, that before 'his last journey he had sketched the first movement and the finale. "When I was away, I made no progress with it, and now there is no time." He was then working on the opera "lolanthe" and the ballet "The Nut-cracker," performed for the first time at St. Petersburg, December i8,t 1892. He was reading the letters of Flaubert with the liveliest pleasure and admiration. In September he went to Vienna, and he visited Sophie Menter, the pianist, at her castle Itter in the Tyrol. He wrote from IClin in October: "I * ^Irs. Kewmarch, in her translation into English of Modest Tschaikowsky's life of his brother, gives the date of Peter's bu-th April 28 (May 10). Juon gives the date April 25 (May 7). As there are typographical and other errors in Mrs. Newmarch's version, interesting and valuable as it is, I prefer the date given by Juon, Hugo Riemann, Iwan Knorr, and Heinrich Stiimcke. t Mrs. Newmarch, in her translation into English of Modest's life of his brother, gives December 17 as the date. But in December he travelled; he visited Berlin, Basle, Paris; and from Berlin he wrote to W. Davidoff (December 28) : "To-day I gave myself up to weighty and important reflection. I examined carefully and objectively, as it were, my symphony, which fortunately is not yet scored and presented to the world. The impres- sion was not a flattering one for me; that is to say, the symphony is only a work written by dint of sheer will on the part of the composer it contains nothing that is interesting or sympathetic. It should be cast aside and forgotten. This determination on my part is admirable and irrevocable. Does it not consequently follow that I am generally dried up, exhausted? I have been thinking this over for three days. Perhaps there is still some subject that might awaken inspiration in me, but;I do not dare to write any more absolute musijc, —that is, symphonic or chamber music. To live without work which would occupy all of one's time, thoughts, and strength, —that would be boresome.

Only the second British pianist in twenty years to reach the finals of the Leeds Piano Competition (in 2000), he was the first British BAX pianist ever to win the top prize at the World Piano Competition in 1997. He appeared in the ‘Rising Stars’ series at the 2001 Ravinia Festival and his promise has been further acknowledged by the BBC, who selected him to be a New Generations Artist over two seasons. Ashley Wass studied at Chethams Music School and won a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music to study with Christopher Elton and Hamish Milne. He was made an Associate of the Piano Sonatas Nos. 3 and 4 Royal Academy in 2002. In 2000/1 he was a participant at the Marlboro Music Festival, playing chamber music with musicians such as Mitsuko Uchida, Richard Goode and David Soyer. He has given recitals at most of the major British concert halls including the Wigmore Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall, Purcell Room, Bridgewater Hall and St Water Music • Winter Waters David’s Hall. His concerto performances have included Beethoven and Brahms with the Philharmonia, Mendelssohn with the Orchestre National de Lille and Mozart with the Vienna Chamber Orchestra at the Vienna Konzerthaus and the Brucknerhaus in Linz. He has also worked with Sir Simon Rattle and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, the London Mozart Players, the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and the BBC Ashley Wass Philharmonic.

A methodology that employs the nonatonic collection (set class 9-12) facilitates new insights into the harmonic language of symphonies by these two composers. The nonatonic collection has received only limited attention in studies of neo-Riemannian operations and transformational theory. This study seeks to go further in exploring the nonatonic‟s potential in forming transformational networks, especially those involving familiar types of seventh chords. An analysis of the entirety of Vaughan Williams‟s Fourth Symphony serves as the exemplar for these theories, and reveals that the nonatonic collection acts as a connecting thread between seemingly disparate pitch elements throughout the work. Nonatonicism is also revealed to be a significant structuring element in passages from Vaughan Williams‟s Sixth Symphony and his Sinfonia Antartica. A review of the historical context of the symphony in Great Britain shows that the need to craft a work of intellectual depth, simultaneously original and traditional, weighed heavily on the minds of British symphonists in the early twentieth century.

    FORGOTTEN SPLENDOUR A Chronology of the North Shore Music Festival 1909 to 1939 by Andrew Cottonaro Beginning in 1909 and lasting until 1939, the North Shore Music Festival of Northwestern University was a significant musical and social event in the Chicago area. For a few days each Spring, the campus hosted a diverse body of performers in a series of grand concerts. Naturally, some of that era’s most eminent singers could be heard there. Their presence certainly helped to sell tickets and their artistry helped to sustain the festival as a popular and critical success. Now, sixty years later, the festival hardly even counts as a faded memory. To date, two books (in part), offer a general outline of the festival’s history, but both lack any detailed analysis of who appeared and what was actually sung. This is the first attempt to present a chronology of the vocal offerings (quite distinct from the orchestral offerings) at the festival. Northwestern University, the official sponsor of the festival, is located in Evanston, Illinois (USA). The town is a suburb of Chicago, directly north of the city and on the banks of Lake Michigan. Because of this geographic position, Evanston and the other cities of the area are called the North Shore, hence the origin of the festival’s name. Northwestern University was incorporated in 1850 and gradually won recognition for its academic excellence. The establishment of musical studies, however, was a tangled web of many failed efforts. In a final and desperate attempt to salvage musical education, the university’s board of trustees in 1891 appointed Peter Christian Lutkin (1858-1931) to direct musical studies, a post that he held until his death.

Prior to the twentieth century, numerous composers are known to have played the viola, and some even preferred it, but none possessed the drive or saw the necessity to establish it as an equal solo counterpart to the violin or cello. Likewise, no performer before Tertis had established themselves as a renowned exponent of the viola. Tertis made it his life’s work to bring the viola to the fore, and his musical prowess and technical ability on the instrument gave him the tools to succeed. Tertis was primarily a performer, thus collaboration with composers also comprised a necessary element of his viola crusade. He commissioned works from several British composers, including one of the first and most prolific composers for the viola, York Bowen (1884-1961).

    Representing a Christian Nation: Sacred and Providential Discourses in Opera in the United States, 1911–1917 AARON ZIEGEL Abstract As the genre of American opera was coming of age during the 1910s, composers and librettists began to incorporate the materials of sacred music into the operatic context with surprising frequency. This often took the form of prayer arias, sacred choruses, hymnody, or choral apotheoses, examples of which appear in Frederick Converse’s The Sacrifice (1911), Victor Herbert’s Natoma (1911), Mary Carr Moore’s Narcissa (1912), and Henry Hadley’s Azora (1917). These composers modeled their efforts after familiar European precedents, including Wagner’s Lohengrin, Gounod’s Faust, and Meyerbeer’s Les Huguenots, among other works. Close examination of the music, however, reveals a distinctively American approach in which sacred materials function to reinforce statements of patriotic nationalism. By situating these long-overlooked American operas alongside contemporaneous commentary on the United States’ sense of its sacred purpose, this article illustrates how the composers and librettists sought to participate in the discourses of providentialism, the “Christian nation” concept, manifest destiny, and “True Americanism” in order to craft a characteristically national style. The inclusion of sacred musical ingredients thus helped redefine the genre for US listeners, as the operas’ characters give voice to their Americanness through the sacred music they sing. A woman prays to God seeking strength and perseverance through troubled times. A recent convert narrates a dream-vision in which the coming of Christ is revealed. A congregation sings hymns of praise. A choir performs an anthem based upon a liturgical text.
