Maureen Brain wasn’t expecting to be strapped to a backboard when she visited the Te Awamutu St John station earlier this week. But the Rosetown Lions president proved to be a good sport and found out first hand the value of the equipment her service group was funding. Mrs Brain and fellow Rosetown Lion Janet Officer were at the station earlier this week to present a cheque for payment of a new ‘Combi Carrier’. While there they also received a practical demonstration of how easy the board is to use. Paramedic Doug Ryan says they use a number of backboards in the process of doing their job, LANDCRUISER 70 CAB/CHASSIS but this one has a number of advantages. $63,000* ‘‘This type of board is easy to use, strong, yet ACCESSORIES lightweight, and has a locking mechanism which NOT INCLUDED PRADO VX DIESEL/AUTOMATIC is much better than the older boards we currently $79,990* have. ‘‘The board can be easily separated and HILUX 4WD eliminates unnecessary movement of a patient, SR5 D/CAB DIESEL, MANUAL making it ideal for anyone with suspected hip, $49,995* pelvic or spinal injuries.’’ The $2297 required for the backboard was raised through a raffle and Rosetown Lions were keen for the funds to go to a worthwhile cause in the community. LAND CRUISER ‘‘Rather than split it up into smaller 200VX WAGON donations, we felt we would like it to go to just one $116,500* HIACE ZL DIESEL MANUAL place, so we contacted St John to see how we $41,990* could help.’’ The donation comes just prior to St John Week (June 11-17), the major fundraising event on the organisation’s calendar. While the flashing lights of ambulances are a familiar sign of help at medical emergencies and community events, St John is a charity and needs public support to provide its wide range of services. One of the local events being staged to support St John is a ValRay country music concert at the Te Awamutu Bible Chapel on June 16 (7.30pm). TC240512CA03 29 Kihikihi Road, Te Awamutu. Stewart Alexander Golf Club’s men’s champion- ship pennant team stumbled at the final hurdle losing 5-4 to Tahuna. After leading the foursomes 2-1 at Raglan on Sunday, they only managed to win two of their six singles matches. Peter Way reports that it was a bitter pill for Mel Brown and his team to swallow, losing such a close, nail-biting encounter on the last day after leading their division all year. On a brighter note, there was a great turn-out for Sunday’s Tony Cook’s Ground Spreader Ltd sponsored tournament. Numbers were swelled by some Te Awamutu Golf Club members taking advantage of the reciprocal rights arrangement to pay a visit.
