VERDI FESTIVAL IN - 2020

Florence, Parma, – 13 days Departure: September 20, 2020 Return: October 2, 2020 Verdi's festival in the fabulous cultural of , Parma and Milan. Sunday, September 20. (D)* DEPART FOR FLORENCE Depart this evening aboard any airline of your choice to Florence, . Dinner and light breakfast served on the plane.

Monday, September 21. (B,D). FLORENCE Independent arrival at Florence Airport. Take a taxi to the centrally located HOTEL L’OROLOGIO where we stay three nights. We will reimburse you the taxi fare. Briefing and cocktails at the hotel. Gala Welcome dinner at a gourmet restaurant.

Tuesday, September 22. (B). FLORENCE Morning sightseeing of this dense with art and culture will include seeing the catherderal with the world’s largest dome built with bricks and mortar, by Brunelleshi. Across from it is the Baptistry with its famous bronze doors with relief sculptures. The east door is renowned as the Gates of Paradise. Afternoon free. This evening we will see an opera at the Teatro del Maggio Florentino.

FLORENCE is one of the world’s greatest artistic capitals and a testament to the Italian capacity for genius. The city was the cradle of the civilization which nurtured the humanistic movement and the Renaissance in the first half of the 15 C. In March of 1436, the architect- engineer genius Filippo Brunelleschi completed building the stupendous dome of the Cathedral out of a double layer of brickwork. Today the multi-colored Cathedral is breathtaking, next to the marble-clad Baptistry with its famous guilded bronze doors.

Wednesday, September 23. (B). FLORENCE This morning, our guide will take you to visit Museum with its fabulous collection of ancient fine art to see Boticelli’s Birth of Venus, Leonardo da Vinci’s Adoration of the Magi, ’s Venus of , ’s Madonna of the Goldfinch, Michelangelo’s Donatello, and Peter Paul Ruben’s paintings. Afternoon free to see any of the many art museums including Academia Gallery housing "" of Michelangelo, Plazzo Vecchio, Pitti Palace and Bobble Gardens.

Thrusday, September 24. (B). FLORENCE - PARMA Today we drive northwest to arrive in Parma where we stay five nights at the centrally located HOTEL STENDHAL. This evening we will see the opera I LOMBARDI ALLA PRIMA CROCIATA by Verdi at the .

PARMA has played a fundamental role in the history of music in Italy. Conductor was born here, and the city was the adopted home of celebrated violinist Niccolo Paganini. However, the city’s close association with influential Romantic composer propelled it onto the international scene. Verdi lived just 20 miles away in the town of Busetto. Parma’s Teatro Regio (Royal Theatre) celebrates his work annually by staging the Verdi Festival. Located in the heart of Parma, the Teatro Regio is one of the most prestigious lyric theaters in Italy, and its success is entwined with that of the city. Our superb guide will take you around the most important sights in Parma including a private visit to the home/museum of Arturo Toscanini.

Friday, September 25. (B). PARMA Today we will take a walking tour to see the highlights of Parma including the Duomo, the Baptistry and the amazing in the Pilotta Palace. Afternoon at leisure, This evening we will see the opera RIGOLETTO by Verdi at the charming, 300-seat in , a 45 minute drive from Parma.

Saturday, September 26. (B). PARMA Morning sightseeing of the Arturo Toscanini Museum to see exhibits of his early life in Parma, his conducting career in Italy, and many letters he received including one from Prof. Albert Einstein. In the afternoon we will have a private reception with “Club of the 27” - (Parma’s Verdi fan club). This evening we will see the opera MACBETH by Verdi at the Church Chiesa di San Fracesco del .

Sunday, September 27. (B). PARMA Today is free to visit the National Gallery of Parma with its fine arts collection. With paintings by Canaletto, Corregio, Leonardo da Vinci, , or see other palaces. Tonight we will see the opera ERNANI by Verdi at Teatro Regio.

Monday, September 28. (B,L,D). VERDI SITES - PARMA This morning we drive west to see Verdi sites, in Roncole where he was born, Busseto where he grew up and the Villa Saint’Agata where he built an elegant home with extensive ground planted with exotic trees. Light lunch will be served in Busseto. This evening we will have our dinner at a gourmet restaurant. Tuesday, September 29. (B). PARMA – MILAN Today we drive northwest (2 hours) to arrive in Milan where we will check into the the five star deluxe GRAND HOTEL et de MILAN.

Wednesday, September 30. (B). MILAN Morning sightseeing of this dynamic city. Among the sights to see is the beautiful Duomo, the world’s largest Gothic Cathedral and the third largest Catholic Church in the world – after the Vatican and the cathedral in Seville. We will walk through Galleria Vittorio Emanuelle II and visit La Scala Museum. Afternoon free to take in the Pinacoteca di Brera or any of the other museums in the city. This evening we will see the opera AGRIPPINA by Handel at La Scala . MILAN is just not very Italian. All the Milanese do is work to make money and they refuse to indulge in the myth of la-dolce-vita. The city has its origin from Celtic settlements, which were subdued by the Romans in 222 B.C. In 312 A.D., Emperor Constantine published the Edict of Milan making Christianity the official religion of the . On Christmas day, 800 AD, Pope Leo III crowned as the Holy Roman Emperor in the Cathedral of Milan. To the Milanese people, all that is just history.

Thursday October 1. (B,D). MILAN This morning we will tour Milan by bus. Amongst sights we will visit is the Sforza Castle, with the amazing collection of works by Da Vinci and Michelangelo and a private visit to Casa de Riposo, which Verdi funded and built for retired musicians and singers. Afternoon free. This evening we will have our Gala Farewell dinner at a gourmet restaurant. Friday October 2. (B). MILAN - BACK HOME We will provide transfer from the hotel to the Malpensa Airport, Milan for departure aboard your airline back home, arriving the same afternoon. Arrividerci.
