The Seminar was part of the Montgomery Arts Guild, an organization which was active in promoting and sponsoring cultural events. Held during July, the Seminar hosted readings by notable poets, offered creative writing workshops, held creative writing contests, and featured musical performances. -

D. EHRHART HE KOREAN WAR is the least remembered and least acknowledged of all Tof America's wars. Even as it was being fought, ordinary Americans were aghast to find the country at war again so soon after World War II; they found it profoundly embarrassing to be put to rout twice in six months by what they perceived to be an Asian rabble in sneakers; and they did not understand a war in which total victory was not and could not be the goal. "America tolerated the Korean War while it was on," writes David Halberstam in The Fifties, "but could not wait to forget it once the war was over."2 And once it was over, the Korean War all but vanished from the American landscape. Just as the war has vanished, so too has its literature. -

Hudgins: "My Only Swerving": Sentimentality in Contemporary Poetry "My Only Swerving" Sentimentality in Contemporary Poetry Andrew Hudgins efore this century poets who chose to write about animals wrote B mainly about birds. There are some things basically poetic about birds: They are pretty, they sing, and they can fly . And if their ability to sing makes them easily emblematic of the poet himself, their ability to fly makes them immediate and compact symbols of man's ancient desire to transcend his earthbound nature. But one seldom feels of the romantic poets, say, that their birds are real birds. Instead they are points of poetic departure. Keats's nightingale serves to call him momentarily into pure "fancy," while Shelley is even more straight forward about his Neoplatonic skylark: ''Bird thou never wirt.'' But in contemporary American poetry there are suddenly a lot of poems about animals traditionally outside the reach of human sympathy, poems about reptiles, amphibians, rodents, game animals and predators, even insects. -

ABSTRACT In "The Reason for Poetry," thefirst of two lectures contained in this booklet, thepoet William Meredithargues for a more generous definition of poetry. Tomove away from the narrow appreciation of poetryas "what I like," Meredith suggests that readers must shift their focusfrom their .own expectationson reading a poem to en understanding of the poet'sintentions. He describes the three roles the poetcan assume as: eissident--trying tocreate a ritual for effecting change;apologist--possibly focusingon errors or imperfections in society and humannature, but implying an underlying acceptance of themodel; and solitary--establishing intense, though limited,agreement with the readeras individual to indiv:lual. Far from beingdefinitive, he argues, thesedescriptions merel, awaken the readerto the infinity of intentionsone can allow the poet. He concludes that itis in being generous with thepoet that the reader discoversone of the greatest powers of poetry--the power to astonish. In "The Reason for Criticism,"the second lecture in the booklet, Meredith advocates a similar generosity ofspirit among critics. Using his own poetry andvarious pieces of criticism, Moredith distinguishesbetween constructive and destructive criticism. Impressionistic andoblique praise, he suggests,can enlighten a subject criticallymore effectively than the most attentive destructive act. -

KIT: BUILDING A CORE POETRY COLLECTION 811: AMERICAN POETRY Created for the Library as Incubator Project by Erinn Batykefer with many thanks to Professor Jesse Lee Kercheval of the UW-Madison Creative Writing Department, whose “Poetry Life List,” was the inspiration for this Kit. Collecting poetry can be daunting because there are so few mainstream review outlets that cover the genre in any meaningful way. There are ways around this, though, and none require a crash course in every school of American Poetry in living memory—a good thing for time-crunched librarians! This kit includes a long list of important American Poets that anyone interested in the genre will want to be familiar with, plus some important titles for each—a core collection. It begins by noting some key techniques and resources that will help you to build on this core collection and grow a wonderful 811 section year by year. CORE MAGAZINES Two suggestions for craft-based magazines: • Poets and Writers • AWP Writer’s Chronicle If your patrons are interested in poetry journals (also known as little magazines), you might subscribe to a few that represent different regions of the country / schools. Be forewarned: yearly subscriptions to little mags are expensive and folks are very opinionated about which are ‘good’; however, they often review new titles, which is a bonus, and they often have robust webpages and online content (including more reviews). The Penguin Anthology of Contemporary Poetry !Additional required texts available on Moodle !Grading Quizzes (3): 30% Three times a semester you will be given a quiz that covers readings from over the past few weeks; it may take the form of essay, short answer, or multiple choice. Each requires you to demonstrate your engagement with concepts discussed in class and the readings themselves. If you are absent on the day of a quiz, you may come to my office hours to make it up, so long as !you do so within one week of your absence. Final Exam: 25% Your final exam will likely include a combination of multiple choice and short answer questions about readings throughout the semester, and an essay question in which you must demonstrate a synthesis of course concepts. I will briefly review exam preparation strategies beforehand, but there will be no comPrehensive review of the material. It covers material from the entire course, but focuses on the second half. The best strategy to succeed on the exams is to aend class, take !good notes, and keep up with readings. The question is not just rhe- torical, for it raises to consciousness the issue of a certain kind of imaginative identity that rarely, if ever, has been adequately explored.
