    Forum on Religion and Ecology Indigenous Traditions and Ecology Annotated Bibliography Abram, David. Becoming Animal: An Earthly Cosmology. New York and Canada: Vintage Books, 2011. As the climate veers toward catastrophe, the innumerable losses cascading through the biosphere make vividly evident the need for a metamorphosis in our relation to the living land. For too long we’ve ignored the wild intelligence of our bodies, taking our primary truths from technologies that hold the living world at a distance. Abram’s writing subverts this distance, drawing readers ever closer to their animal senses in order to explore, from within, the elemental kinship between the human body and the breathing Earth. The shape-shifting of ravens, the erotic nature of gravity, the eloquence of thunder, the pleasures of being edible: all have their place in this book. --------. The Spell of the Sensuous: Perception and Language in a More-than-Human World. New York: Vintage, 1997. Abram argues that “we are human only in contact, and conviviality, with what is not human” (p. ix). He supports this premise with empirical information, sensorial experience, philosophical reflection, and the theoretical discipline of phenomenology and draws on Merleau-Ponty’s philosophy of perception as reciprocal exchange in order to illuminate the sensuous nature of language. Additionally, he explores how Western civilization has lost this perception and provides examples of cultures in which the “landscape of language” has not been forgotten. The environmental crisis is central to Abram’s purpose and despite his critique of the consequences of a written culture, he maintains the importance of literacy and encourages the release of its true potency.

    JOHN MAUNU Digital Resources for Teaching the Environment, Sustainability, and Ecology in World History ncient cave art showed that humans did not regard themselves as the center of the Anatural world. Lascaux cave art showed how animals and the environment were the center of human life. The Neolithic Revolution saw a change over time as to the relationship between humans and the environment. Early Vedic shamans wrote poems on the power of forests and nature; Taoists and the Buddha shared a deep respect for the environment and nature. However, with the Neolithic Revolution, humans began moving from the Lascaux perspective of humans in a secondary role in the environment to viewing nature and the environment as real estate, “territory,” and property to be dominated and exploited; since then most historians wrote about the environment from this human-centered perspective. However, by the mid twentieth century, there evolved among many environmentalists in the United States a model for understanding global environmental history in terms of the interaction between humankind and the environment, which was soon adopted by most world historians. The following digital resources reflect these shifts—these “changes over time”—in the historiography of the global environmental history. This database is divided into sec- tions: Environmental Racism/Justice, Ecofeminism; Queer Ecology; Far Right Environ- mentalism; Global Sustainability and Environment Resources; Teaching Sustainability and Environmental History, with a sub-heading, Teaching the Environment and Collapse of Civilization Resources; Eco-Fiction/Climate Fiction; Environment/Nature in Art and Architecture; Religion and Environment; Digital Resources arranged by global regions, such as the Artic, with sources arranged within regions chronologically using common world historian periodization; and, finally, Environment Journals/Websites.

Kimmerer Plenary Speaker Sunday, June, 25th 7:30 pm Location TBA Robin Wall Kimmerer is Professor of Environmental and Forest Biology at the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY-ESF). She is the author of numerous scientific articles, and the books Gathering Moss: A Natural and Cultural History of Mosses (2003), and Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge and the Teachings of Plants (2013). She is an enrolled member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation, and combines her heritage with her scientific and environmental passions. Early life and education Robin Wall Kimmerer was born in 1953 in the open country of upstate New York to Robert and Patricia Wall. She grew up play- ing in the surrounding countryside. This time outdoors, playing, living, and observing nature rooted a deep appreciation for the natural environment in Kimmerer. Her enthusiasm for the environment was encouraged by her parents and Kimmerer began envisioning a life studying botany. Kimmerer remained near home for college, attending SUNY-ESF and receiving a bachelor’s degree in botany in 1975. She got a job working for Bausch & Lomb as a microbiologist. Two years working in a corporate lab convinced Kimmerer to explore other options and she returned to school. She moved to Wisconsin to attend the University of Wisconsin, Madison. She earned her master’s degree in botany there in 1979, followed by her PhD in plant ecology in 1983. Career From Wisconsin, Kimmerer moved to Kentucky, where she found a teaching position at Transylvania University in Lexington.

The study is divided into two parts. First, the Creation Story is explored as it transmits the origin of the Three Sisters, a cropping system of inter-planted corn, beans and squash. The teachings of the Three Sisters highlights the importance of polyculture and sustainability. Conversely, a Westerners’ scientific account of how the Three Sisters came to be farmed together is studied. The independent pathways of the corn, beans and squash is examined as they arrived in New York State from the Mexico highlands. Recent findings show the Three Sisters were adopted independently in eastern North America beginning around A.D.

That may sound worn and trite, but it is heartfelt! I have first and foremost to thank outgoing President Edward Kennelly for his strong leadership and guidance this year. IHe and the executive team have done an excellent job of moving the Society forward. Even as Vice President, I have been grateful for the support received from our Business manager, Ms. Laura Stoll, and know she will be a valuable partner again this year! My goals for the year are to advance the Society by focusing on a revamp of the ASP website and by promoting diversity of our Society and of our planet. Updating our website will create a more powerful resource for members and a potential draw for others interested in pharmacognosy. This was one of the rec- ommendations from a study conducted by the Virginia Commonwealth University Brandcenter two years ago. This was a stated goal of President Kennelly, but un- fortunately the existing website was hacked during his term and prevented him from making any progress. This hack was certainly an unintended learning expe- rience for all of us, but I believe the site is now on a more secure platform and we will be able to make a number of improvements this year. We are still seeking formal proposals for website redesign, so please let me or our webmaster, Dr.
