The vasculature in the receptacle of Caulopnjilum, Leontice and G]mnospermiitm is similar, but that of Bongardia differs in the very thick xylem of the receptacular stele and in the independent origin ef the traces to the sepals, petals and stamens from the stele. A tendency is recognized in that the outer floral elements receive traces ofa sing]e nature in origin from the stele while the inner elements receive traces ofa double nature. The traces to the inner e}ements are often clerived from common bundles in Caulop/tyllttm, Leontice and G"mnospermittm. A similar tendency is observed in the trace pattern in the other genera of Epimedieae, but the adnation of the traces is not as distinct as in the genera treated in this study.

This study describes the reproductive system of Stachytarpheta maximiliani (Verbenaceae), including its floral biology, nectar and pollen availability and insect foraging patterns, identifying whose species act as pollinators. It was carried out in a Brazilian Atlantic rain forest site. Observations on the pollination biology of the Verbenaceae S. maximiliani indicate that their flowering period extends from September through May. Anthesis occurs from 5:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and nectar and pollen are available during all the anthesis. Many species of beetles, hemipterans, flies, wasps, bees and butterflies visit their flowers, but bees and butterflies are the most frequent visitors. The flowers are generally small, gathered in dense showy inflorescences. A complex of floral characteristcs, such as violet-blue color of flowers, long floral tubes, without scents, nectar not exposed, high concentration of sugar in nectar (about 32%), allowed identification of floral syndromes (melittophily and psicophily) and function for each visitor.

The plant is considered as emmenagogue, purgative and stimulant, abotificient and also used in bronchitis, asthma and malarial fever, leaves used as antipyretic, antimicrobial. Flower also shows antioxidant and antiviral activity. The present study deals with the macroscopical and microscopical studies of Caesalpinia pulcherrima leaf. Macroscopically, the Caesalpinia pulcherrima is compound leaf, ovate shape, entire margin and glabrous surface, asymmetrical base, small petiole. The microscopic study showed presence of collenchyma, vascular bundle, spongy parenchyma, palisade cells, stomata. Some distinct characters were observed while studying the transverse sections. Physiochemical studies revealed total ash, acid insoluble ash, water insoluble ash, loss on drying, alcohol soluble extractive, water soluble extractive and preliminary phytochemical studies of the leaves were also carried out. Signed: 2 ABSTRACT This thesis is primarily a cultural history of abortion in the early medieval West. It is a historical study of perceptions, rather than the practice, of abortion. The span covered ranges from the sixth century, when certain localised ecclesiastical initiatives in the form of councils and sermons addressed abortion, through to the ninth century, when some of these initiatives were integrated into pastoral texts produced in altogether different locales. The thesis uses a range of predominantly ecclesiastical texts – canonical collections, penitentials, sermons, hagiography, scriptural commentaries, but also law- codes – to bring to light the multiple ways in which abortion was construed, experienced and responded to as a moral and social problem. Although there is a concerted focus upon the ecclesiastical tradition on abortion, a focus which ultimately questions how such a tradition ought to be understood, the thesis also explores the broader cultural significance of abortion. Early medieval churchmen, rulers, and jurists saw multiple things in abortion and there were multiple perspectives upon abortion. The thesis illuminates the manifold and, occasionally, surprising ways in which abortion was perceived in relation to gender, sexuality, politics, theology and the church. The history of early medieval abortion has been largely underwritten. Moreover, it has been inadequately historicised.

Marrubium vulgare L. White horehound Family: Lamiaceae Range: Nearly all states, including all western states, except perhaps North Dakota. Found almost worldwide. Habitat: Pastures, fields, roadsides, rangeland, disturbed natural areas, waste places, ditches, and other disturbed places. Most often in dry places. White horehound is especially common in overgrazed areas. Origin: Native to Eurasia. White horehound was once cultivated as a medicinal herb and for flavoring candy. Impacts: Expands range during drought conditions, especially under heavy grazing. Once established, it can outcompete native vegetation and form dense stands in annual grasslands. Livestock avoid consuming the bitter-tasting foliage, and the plant thrives in the absence of competition with other vegetation. California Invasive Plant Council (Cal-IPC) Inventory: Limited Invasiveness White horehound is a cool-season perennial to 2 ft tall, often looking like a low shrub. It has densely hairy white-woolly stems, thick and square in cross-section, which mostly branch near the base of the plant. Its leaves are aromatic, opposite on the stems, ovate to nearly round, 0.5 to 2.5 inches long, with round-toothed margins.
