The 11 historic fountains of Solothurn Fountains, in which women used to wash their clothes, can be found in every place. However, it is hardly impossible to find a place where the fountains are as grandly built as they are in Solothurn. They reflect the wealth that the French ambassadors brought into the city. “Solothurn allegedly attempted to increase the number of its fountains to 11. As a result, it became, in proportion to its size, the city with the most fountains in Switzerland”, writes Fritz Wyss in his book “Die Stadt Solothurn”. Most of the fountains were built in the 16th century. By the way: Bern, too, has 11 monumental fountains in the old city. In Solothurn water flows in many other fountains, too. In “Brunnen der Stadt Solothurn”, Adele Tatarinoff lists about fifty of them. To name but a few: the Kollegiumsbrunnen (college fountain) of 1676, the Franziskanerbrunnen (Franciscan fountain) situated south of the Franciscan church and dating from around 1759, the Pisonibrünnlein (little Pisoni fountain) (1774) next to the St. Urs tower, the Schmiedengassebrunnen (blacksmith’s alley fountain) of 1796, the Landhausbrünnlein (little Landhaus fountain) (1888) or the fountain outside of the Basel gate (1781, it was moved to its present site in 1972). The city also created fountain systems in today’s time such as the one at the vocational school (1955), the Kosciuszko fountain (1967) by the artist Schang Hutter at the Soba bank or the Heilbronn fountain (1982) at the Städtische Werke. However, the above mentioned fountains do not have the monumental size of the other 11 ones. -

Welcome to Frontiers Page 1 of 10 Science Education and Our Future Yervant Terzian ACCORDING TO CURRENT theory, matter was created from energy at the time of the Big Bang, at the beginning of cosmic history. As the hot, early universe expanded and cooled, it separated into pieces that later formed the hundreds of millions of galaxies we now see. One such galaxy was the Milky Way, which in turn spawned some 200 billion stars, of which the sun is one. Around the sun, a small planet was formed on which biological evolution has progressed during the last few billion years. You and I are part of the result and share this cosmic history. Now here we are, atoms from the Big Bang, an intelligent and technological civilization of about 6 billion, fast multiplying, and largely unhappy human beings. This long evolution has now given us the wisdom to ask what is it that we want. We all want survival, of course, but survival on our own terms, for ourselves and generations to come. 1, and probably you, would want those terms to be comfortable, happy, and democratic. If our most fundamental wish is a happy and democratic survival, this can be achieved only by an informed society. To be informed we must be educated, and in today's world no one ignorant of science and technology can be considered educated. Hence, science education appears fundamentally important to our happy future. During the past decades people have been asking me what was the value of science when during the Apollo mission inspired by President John E Kennedy, we spent $24 billion to visit the moon. -

More than just a name. Physicist. Genius. Science pop star. Philosopher and humanist. Thinker and guru. On a par with Copernicus, Galileo or Newton. And: Albert Einstein – from Ulm! The most famous scientist of our time was actually born on 14th March 1879 at Bahnhofstraße 20 in Ulm. Albert Einstein only lived in the city on the Danube for 15 months. His extended family – 18 of Einstein’s cousins lived in Ulm at one time or another – were a respected and deep-rooted part of the city’s society, however. This may explain Einstein’s enduring connection to the city of his birth, which he described as follows in a letter to the Ulmer Abend- post on 18th March 1929, shortly after his 50th birthday: “The birthplace is as much a unique part of your life as the ancestry of your biological mother. We owe part of our very being to our city of birth. So I look on Ulm with gratitude, as it combines noble artistic tradition with simple and healthy character.” 8 9 The “miracle year” 1905 – Einstein becomes the founder of the modern scientific world view Was Einstein a “physicist of the century”? There‘s no doubt of that. In his “miracle year” (annus mirabilis) of 1905 he pub- lished 4 groundbreaking works along- side his dissertation. Each of these was worthy of a Nobel Prize and turned him into a physicist of international standing: the theory of special relativity, the light quanta hypothesis (“photoelectric effect”), Thus, Albert Einstein became the found- for which he received the Nobel Prize in er of the modern scientific world view. -

Although the three essays do not directly build upon one another, we have nevertheless decided to present them in a single preprint for two reasons. First, they result from a project that grew out of an earlier cooperation inaugurated by the Berlin Working Group “Albert Einstein.“ This group was part of the research center “Development and Socialization“ under the direction of Wolfgang Edel- stein at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development and Education.1 The Berlin Working Group, directed by Peter Damerow and Jürgen Renn, was sponsored by the Senate of Berlin. Its aim was to pursue research on Einstein in Berlin with particular attention to the relation between his science and its context. The research activities of the Working Group are now being continued at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science partly, in cooperation with Michel Janssen, John Norton, and John Stachel. -

Appendix Einstein’s FBI file – reports on Albert Einstein’s Berlin period 322 Appendix German archives are not the only place where Einstein dossiers can be found. Leaving aside other countries, at least one personal dossier exists in the USA: the Einstein File of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).1036 This file holds 1,427 pages. In our context the numerous reports about Ein- stein’s “Berlin period” are of particular interest. Taking a closer look at them does not lead us beyond the scope of this book. On the contrary, these reports give a complex picture of Einstein’s political activities during his Berlin period – albeit from a very specific point of view: the view of the American CIC (Counter Intelligence Corps) and the FBI of the first half of the 1950s. The core of these reports is the allegation that Einstein had cooperated with the communists and that his address (or “office”) had been used from 1929 to 1932 as a relay point for messages by the CPG (Communist Party of Germany, KPD), the Communist International and the Soviet Secret Service. The ultimate aim of these investigations was, reportedly, to revoke Einstein’s United States citizenship and banish him. Space constraints prevent a complete review of the individual reports here. Sounderthegivencircumstancesasurveyofthecontentsofthetwomost im- portant reports will have to suffice for our purposes along with some additional information. These reports are dated 13 March 1950 and 25 January 1951. 13 March 1950 The first comprehensive report by the CIC (Hq. 66th CIC Detachment)1037 about Einstein’s complicity in activities by the CPG and the Soviet Secret Service be- tween 1929 and 1932 is dated 13 March 1950.1038 Army General Staff only submit- ted this letter to the FBI on 7 September 1950. -

Math, Physics, and Calabi–Yau Manifolds Shing-Tung Yau Harvard University October 2011 Introduction I’d like to talk about how mathematics and physics can come together to the benefit of both fields, particularly in the case of Calabi-Yau spaces and string theory. This happens to be the subject of the new book I coauthored, THE SHAPE OF INNER SPACE It also tells some of my own story and a bit of the history of geometry as well. 2 In that spirit, I’m going to back up and talk about my personal introduction to geometry and how I ended up spending much of my career working at the interface between math and physics. Along the way, I hope to give people a sense of how mathematicians think and approach the world. I also want people to realize that mathematics does not have to be a wholly abstract discipline, disconnected from everyday phenomena, but is instead crucial to our understanding of the physical world. 3 There are several major contributions of mathematicians to fundamental physics in 20th century: 1. Poincar´eand Minkowski contribution to special relativity. (The book of Pais on the biography of Einstein explained this clearly.) 2. Contributions of Grossmann and Hilbert to general relativity: Marcel Grossmann (1878-1936) was a classmate with Einstein from 1898 to 1900. he was professor of geometry at ETH, Switzerland at 1907. In 1912, Einstein came to ETH to be professor where they started to work together. Grossmann suggested tensor calculus, as was proposed by Elwin Bruno Christoffel in 1868 (Crelle journal) and developed by Gregorio Ricci-Curbastro and Tullio Levi-Civita (1901). -
