Soviet Communism and Informal Family Insurance Abstract We study the effect of exposure to communism (EC), a political-economic regime based on collectivist planning, on preferences for family supports, which we refer to as ‘informal family insurance’. We exploit both cross-country and cohort variation in EC in a large sample of Central and Eastern European countries (CEEC). Against the backdrop that ‘communism gives rise to the abolition of the family’, we find robust evidence that EC strengthens the preference for family insurance which coexists with a stronger preference for social insurance. We find a six per cent increase in preferences for care to older parents and a four per cent increase in preferences for support to pre-school children and financial support to adult children. These effects are explained by the erosion of both generalized trust and the lower confidence in public institutions, suggesting that (raising uncertainty and adversity during) communism increased the demand for all types of available insurance.

Memories of the Sinah Gun Site by Hazel Gould (née Plumbly) and an extract from Havant in the Second World War by Ralph Cousins Havant History Booklet No. 21 £6 Noel and Valerie Pycroft with a piece of the parachute worn by one of the aircrew who bailed out from the Wellington bomber that crashed near to Thorney Island on 28 December 1940. The airman landed near to Pilsey Island but unfortunately did not survive. Most of the parachute was shared out between their relations who turned it in to silk underwear. The Bomber Command War Diaries note for this date: France: 75 aircraft to factory at Bordeaux and 10 ports and airfields. 1 Blenheim and 1 Wellington lost; 4 aircraft crashed in England. It is most likely that this aircraft was one of the four. 2 These wartime memories are an extract from Hayling, An Island of Laughter and Tears by Noel Pycroft My love of the family home, church and people I have shared my life with has given me – instilled by my parents from childhood – a lasting interest in all things in this world, especially of Hayling Island, its history, development, work and worship. I have seen everything from early aircraft to supersonic monsters, horses and carts to lorries carrying 40 tons. From children poorly fed and clothed to our throw-away society – a far better if discontented world; progress goes on.

    Acta Poloniae Historica 114, 2016 PL ISSN 0001–6829 Olga Linkiewicz Tadeusz Manteuffel Institute of History, Polish Academy of Sciences SCIENTIFIC IDEALS AND POLITICAL ENGAGEMENT: POLISH ETHNOLOGY AND THE ‘ETHNIC QUESTION’ BETWEEN THE WARS* Abstract The article brings to light the relationship between politics and social sci- ences in interwar Poland in its local and transnational dimensions. It explores the beginnings of expertise in ethnology and the evolution of the discipline’s tools and methods as closely linked to the political goals of the interwar Polish state, and the post-coup Sanacja [Sanation] regime in particular. Ethnologists carried out fi eldwork focused on multiethnic territories, such as Eastern Galicia, which were subjected to international territorial disputes. The collaboration with politicians and the administration – developed mostly in the framework of research institutes – was a source of inspiration and, at the same time, stiff competition between scientifi c schools. To illustrate some consequences of this collaboration, the article traces an argument over scientifi c approaches to the ‘ethnic question’ which involved ethnologists and empirical sociologists, and the connection of this argument to the objectivity principle in science. These dif- ferent approaches refl ect international theoretical and epistemological divisions at the time as much as they show the direct and indirect exchange of ideas within the European scholarship. Given that direct restrictions on foreign investors would now be illegal under the EU treaties, the desire to preserve the status quo has resulted in limited access to land not only for foreign but also for some groups of domestic investors. In this paper, we analyze land market regulations adopted in Latvia, Poland, Romania, and Slovakia and we argue that these new regulations create particularized or non-inclusive institutions. Further, we argue that these new regulations will likely result in a reduced competition and thus impact land prices, sale transactions and access to land to farmers and foreigners. However, the market impacts are different across the four study countries due to the heterogeneity in the adopted new regulations.

Tadeusza Kościuszki") was one of 16 Polish squadrons in the Royal Air Force (RAF) during the Second World War. It was the highest scoring RAF squadron of the Battle of Britain.[1][2][3] The squadron was named after the Polish and American Revolution hero General Tadeusz Kościuszko, and the eponymous Polish 7th Air Escadrille founded by Merian C. Cooper, that served Poland in the 1919-1921 Polish-Soviet War. No. 303 was formed in Britain as part of an agreement between the Polish Government in Exile and the United Kingdom. It had a distinguished combat record and was disbanded in December 1946. No. 303 Polish Fighter Squadron 2 History No. 303 (Polish) Squadron was formed on 2 August 1940 at RAF Northolt, and became operational on 31 August. Its initial cadre was 13 Officer and 8 NCO pilots and 135 Polish ground staff.
