Noord Brabant & Limburg © Lonely Planet 267 Noord Brabant & Limburg The Dutch southeast belies most clichés about the Netherlands: tulips, windmills and dykes are scarce. Although there’s still plenty of beer. However the Belgian and German influences are felt. Even the French have influence, especially in the wider array of culinary treats on offer. Noord Brabant is primarily a land of agriculture and industry peppered with a few pleas- ant towns, such as Den Bosch. It’s also home to the Netherlands’ most popular domestic tourist draw, the Efteling theme park, and the biggest street fair in Benelux, the Tilburgse Kermis. It’s striped by rivers which make for curvaceous – and bodacious – cycling along their banks. Meanwhile, Limburg is home to beautiful Maastricht, contender for the title of Finest Dutch City, as well as – drum roll – hills. The one outstanding attraction in these two provinces, NOORD BRABANT & NOORD BRABANT & Maastricht, is as diametrically different from Amsterdam as it is geographically distant from it except in one key area: its people are just as irreverent and just as interested in fun. LIMBURG Neither province has its roots in the asceticism of the north, a fact made obvious during carnaval, when the streets fill with bands and impromptu parties, with fireworks overhead. And both provinces’ proximity to Belgium and all those indulgent Catholic monasteries – most of which double as excellent microbreweries – mean there are many chances to imbibe. In fact, the Dutch call the southeastern lifestyle bourgondisch: like the epicurean inhabitants of Burgundy in France, people in these parts love to eat and drink heartily.   • 1 Abstract: the Ratification of the Maastricht Treaty Caused Significant
    Abstract: The ratification of the Maastricht Treaty caused significant ratification problems for a series of national governments. The product of a new intergovernmental conference, namely the Amsterdam Treaty, has caused fewer problems, as the successful national ratifications have demonstrated. Employing the two-level concept of international bargains, we provide a thorough analysis of these successful ratifications. Drawing on datasets covering the positions of the negotiating national governments and the national political parties we highlight the differences in the Amsterdam ratification procedures in all fifteen European Union members states. This analysis allows us to characterize the varying ratification difficulties in each state from a comparative perspective. Moreover, the empirical analysis shows that member states excluded half of the Amsterdam bargaining issues to secure a smooth ratification. Ook steden in Limburg kampen met hoge percentages laaggeletterden. Sommige steden zelfs met percentages boven de 16%. Cubiss deed onderzoek naar laaggeletterdheid per wijk en kern binnen gemeentes en publiceerde een confronterend resultaat. “Meer dan één op de tien Limburgers heeft moeite met het lezen of schrijven van Nederlands”, zegt Ilse Lodewijks, Projectleider Participatie en zelfredzaamheid bij Cubiss. Cubiss Limburg adviseert en ondersteunt bibliotheken bij hun activiteiten ter voorkoming en vermindering van laaggeletterdheid. De organisatie deed in alle Limburgse gemeentes de ‘Ken uw doelgroep’-analyse, die een beeld geeft van de spreiding van laaggeletterden binnen wijken en kernen. Ilse: “Het landelijk gemiddelde voor laaggeletterdheid is 11,9%. Limburg scoort dus relatief hoog met bijna 13%.     OVERLOON: THE FORGOTTEN BATTLE DATE: SEPTEMBER 40 – OCOTOBER 18 1944 Belligerents United Kingdom Germany United States The Battle of Overloon was a battle fought between Allied forces and the German Army which took place in and around the village of Overloon in the south-east of the Netherlands between 30 September and 18 October 1944. The battle, which resulted in an Allied victory, ensued after the Allies launched Operation Aintree. The Allies went on to liberate the town of Venray. In September 1944, the Allies had launched Operation Market Garden, a major offensive from the Dutch-Belgian border across the south of the Netherlands through Eindhoven and Nijmegen toward the Rhine bridge at Arnhem, with the goal of crossing the Rhine and bypassing the Siegfried Line in preparation for the final drive toward Berlin. Allied airborne troops were defeated at the Rhine bridge in Arnhem and the advance stopped south of the Lower Rhine, resulting in a narrow salient that ran from the north of Belgium across the south-east of the Netherlands. German forces attacked this salient from a bridgehead west of the bend in the river Meuse (known as Maas in Dutch and German) near the city of Venlo. The bridgehead was established by retreating German forces who were reinforced with troops arriving from nearby Germany by crossing the Meuse in Venlo. The western edge of this bridgehead ran through the Peel, a region with bogs and several canals blocking an Allied advance. The Allies decided to attack the bridgehead from the north, and this meant they had to capture Overloon and Venray, which were on the road toward Venlo.

    ‘Binnenspel’, een driejarige (2010-2012) publiekscampagne van het Huis voor de Zorg, gericht op het bevorderen van de sociale cohesie in Limburg, met een speciaal accent op wonen, welzijn en zorg. • 5 mei 2011 Stichting Kunst Werk Plaats 64 Venray in ‘Binnenspel’ van 9 mei Maar bovenal maakt de KWP – niet in de laatste plaats door haar specifieke bedrijfsvoering en cultuur – het leven van een kwetsbare groep medeburgers aanzienlijk aangenamer. In de ‘Binnenspel’-aflevering van 9 mei staat de Stichting De KWP gaat uit van mogelijkheden Kunst Werk Plaats Venray (KWP) centraal. Ontstaan vanuit van mensen, niet van beperkingen een burgerinitiatief, is deze organisatie sinds een tiental jaren of onmogelijkheden. Volwaardigheid actief voor mensen met een achtergrond in de geestelijke en gelijkwaardigheid zijn daarbij kernbegrippen. Het coachen van de gezondheidzorg. De insteek lijkt waarbinnen momenteel meer dan 90 personen geregeld actief in principe vanzelfsprekend, maar blijkt in de praktijk onorthodox zijn.

Inleiding Binnen de gemeente Peel en Maas wordt werk gemaakt om de regenwaterproblematiek op te lossen. Vanuit het veranderende klimaat en de hoeveelheid verharding is het noodzakelijk dat regenwater “gebufferd” kan worden, waarna het gedoseerd zijn weg kan vervolgen. Binnen de gemeente Peel en Maas is samen met Waterschap Limburg het gebied “De Baenjd” benoemd als buffergebied. De gemeente heeft een structuur opgezet met werkgroepen en voor dit onderdeel wil men graag een plan, dat vroegtijdig besproken is met de omgeving. Daarom heeft IKL, Ron Janssen, inzet gepleegd vanuit de kaders Waterschap Limburg en de gemeente Peel en Maas om samen met de streek een voorstel uit te werken. Onderstaand de opzet van het voorstel, dat op 27 november besproken wordt in de Werkgroep. 2. Uitgangspunten en randvoorwaarden Vanuit de opdracht heeft IKL uitgangspunten meegekregen die duidelijk aangeven dat de buffer voor waterretentie functioneel moet zijn en te allen tijde zijn functie kan volbrengen. Vandaar heeft Antea berekend wat de inhoud van de retentiebuffer dient te zijn. Gemeente heeft de beoogde locatie aangegeven.
