Abstract Physical maps of the ribosomal RNA gene 28S of species belonging to the genera Paratelmatobius and Scythrophrys were constructed, using five restriction endonucleases. The restriction sites for Bam HI, Bgl II, Bst EII, and Eco RI had similar positions in all species, although there were interspecific differences in the size of the restriction fragments obtained. An additional Pvu II site was found in Scythrophrys specimens from Piraquara (State of Paraná, Brazil) and from São Bento do Sul (State of Santa Catarina, Brazil), but not in the Scythrophrys specimens from Rancho Queimado (State of Santa Catarina, Brazil). This finding is in agreement with the hypothesis regarding the existence of two species in the genus Scythrophrys. On the other hand, the extra Bst EII site considered in the literature to be a synapomorphy for the subfamilies Leptodactylinae and Telmatobiinae was not observed in the genera Paratelmatobius and Scythrophrys, which brings new questions about some taxonomic classifications that include Paratelmatobius in Leptodactylinae and Scythrophrys in Telmatobiinae. Interspecific variation was observed in the size of the restriction fragments analyzed and, in the case of group I Scythrophrys, there was also a variation between the individuals of the two populations. -

The karyotypes of both species showed a diploid number of 24 chromosomes and shared some similarity in the morphology of some pairs. On the other hand, pairs 4 and 6 widely differed between these complements. These karyotypes also differed in their NOR number and location. Size heteromorphism was seen in all NOR-bearing chromosomes of the two karyotypes. In addition, both karyotypes showed small centromeric C-bands and a conspicuous heterochromatic band in the short arm of chromosome 1, although with a different size in each species. The P. curdosoi complement also showed other strongly stained non-centromeric C-bands, with no counterparts in the P. curdosoi karyotype. Chromosome staining with fluorochromes revealed heterogeneity in the base composition of two of the non-centromeric C-bands of P. -
Natural History of Holoaden Luederwaldti (Amphibia: Strabomantidae: Holoadeninae) in Southeastern of Brazil

This study reports the rediscovery of Holoaden luederwaldti Miranda-Ribeiro, 1920 and provides information on the distribution, sexual dimorphism, reproduction and vocalization of a population of this species in Campos do Jordão, São Paulo (southeastern Brazil). Sampling was carried out in the Parque Estadual de Campos do Jordão (PECJ) from October 2005 through December 2008. Collecting was conducted using pitfall traps with a drift-fence on different altitudinal gradients (1,540 m, 1,780 m and 2,000 m a.s.l.). Fifty-two specimens of H. luederwaldti were collected in the PECJ. The mean snout-vent length (SVL) was 36.17 mm for males and 42.61 mm for females, indicating sexual dimor- phism in body size. Holoaden luederwaldti occurred during the warm-rainy months. The population was distributed between 1500 and 2000 m, and the greater abundance was registered in well preserved forest areas. Mature females contained from 36 to 41 oocytes and the mean of oocyte diameter was 3.72 mm. The advertisement call of H. luederwaldti consists of simple notes composed of three harmonics. The record of the population of H. luederwaldti in the PECJ has reinforced the importance of investigating different areas of the forest when conducting faunal surveys. KEY WORDS. CEP: SE 405 30 E-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT Amphibians are the most threatened vertebrate group in the world, with about 32% of species under some category of threat. Conservation strategies depend on basic data, such as species distribution and natural history, which are largely lacking for endemic species inhabiting mosaics of highland grasslands and forest patches of Southern and Southeastern Brazil. Highland grassland fields occur in the Serra do Mar ecoregion and harbor an endemic anuran fauna associated to rocky outcrops and open fields interspersed among Araucaria, Rain and Cloud Forests. Here, we assembled occurrence records of anurans from mosaics of highland grasslands and forest patches in Brazil from the literature. We also compiled the conservation status of those species, including the spatial distribution of richness and endemism. We found that 75 species occur in this environment, of which about 46% are endemic. Highland grassland areas in and around Protected Areas in the Serra do Mar and Serra da Mantiqueira are under strong pressure, including criminal fire, forestry, and mining. -

The new species is characterized by its large body size, large head, moderately bulging dorsal glands, limbs long and slender, a deeply dark dorsal coloration, and dark ventral surface with a light abdominal blotch of variable size. The new species expands the range of the genus 200 km eastward in Brazil. POMBAL JR. 3, 4 ABSTRACT: The genus Paratelmatobius currently comprises five species of small frogs endemic to the Atlantic Forest of Southeastern Brazil. Paratelmatobius gaigeae was known only by two syntypes collected in 1931. Recently, we re-discovered this species in Serra da Bocaina, near the type locality, in an altitude above 1000m. A re-description is presented. The re-discovery of P. gaigeae illustrates how deficiently sampled the amphibian fauna of Atlantic Forest is. The success in finding presumably missing or rare terrestrial frog species is due to the use of intensive sampling procedures such as pit-fall traps. A preliminary list of anurans collected at the same locality is provided. Key words: Anura. Telmatobiinae. Paratelmatobius gaigeae. Atlantic forest. Taxonomy. RESUMO: Redescoberta de Paratelmatobius gaigeae (Cochran, 1938) (Amphibia, Anura, Leptodactylidae). O gênero Paratelmatobius atualmente é composto por cinco espécies de anuros de pequeno porte endêmicos da Floresta Atlântica do sudeste do Brasil. Paratelmatobius gaigeae era conhecido apenas dos dois síntipos coletados em 1931. Recentemente, esta espécie foi redescoberta na Serra da Bocaina, próximo à localidade- tipo, em altitude superior a 1000m. A redescoberta de Paratelmatobius gaigeae ilustra a deficiência de amostragem de anfíbios da Floresta Atlântica. O sucesso no encontro de espécies terrestres de anuros aparentemente desaparecidas ou raras é devido a utilização de armadilha de interceptação e queda como procedimento de amostragem. -

ANFÍBIOS Anfíbios Uma Análise da Lista Brasileira de Anfíbios Ameaçados de Extinção Célio F. B. Haddad 1 A classe Amphibia (anfíbios) corresponde ao grupo que engloba os animais conhecidos como Gymnophiona ou Apoda (cobras-cegas), Caudata ou Urodela (salamandras) e Anura (sapos, rãs e pererecas). No Mundo, são conhecidas cerca de 6.100 espécies de anfíbios (AmphibiaWeb, 2006; Frost, 2007), das quais cerca de 800 ocorrem no Brasil (SBH, 2005). O grupo dos sapos, rãs e pererecas é de longe o mais diversificado no mundo, o mesmo ocorrendo no Brasil. O grupo das cobras-cegas é relativamente diversificado no país, com cerca de 30 espécies, e o grupo das salamandras é representado por apenas uma espécie conhecida, que ocorre na bacia Ama- zônica. Os anfíbios são um grupo de grande importância ecológica, tanto por sua grande diversidade quanto pelo fato de corresponderem a um grupo de interface entre a água e a terra. Grande número de espécies de anfíbios apresenta ciclo de vida bifásico, com uma fase larval aquática – ex- clusiva de água doce – e outra fase terrestre, pós-metamórfica. Cada uma dessas fases tem ecologia parti- cular. Na fase larval, podemos encontrar dietas que variam de acordo com a espécie: as larvas podem ser comedoras de algas, detritívoras, filtradoras, onívoras ou carnívoras. Na fase pós-metamórfica, os anfíbios são predadores por excelência, capturando presas nos ambientes aquáticos e terrestres, principalmente in- vertebrados. Também servem de alimento a uma imensa gama de animais, desde invertebrados até peixes, répteis, aves, mamíferos e mesmo algumas espécies de anfíbios. Tendo em vista a pele permeável e exposta e a ocupação de habitats aquáticos e terrestres, os anfíbios são considerados como indicadores sensíveis a diversos fatores ambientais (Blaustein, 1994). -

In its decision X/2, paragraph 14, the Conference of the Parties decided that at its future meetings, it would review progress in the implementation of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020, and requested the Executive Secretary to prepare an analysis/synthesis of national, regional and other actions, including targets as appropriate, established in accordance with the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011- 2020 (para. 17(b)). 2. Further to decision XII/1, SBSTTA-19 was requested to identify further opportunities and additional key actions, including for those Aichi Biodiversity Targets for which there has been the least progress at the global level. A list of such targets was contained in an annex to the note by the Executive Secretary for that session (UNEP/CBD/SBSTTA/19/2) pursuant to the assessment of progress provided in the fourth edition of the Global Biodiversity Outlook. As outlined in the annex, a number of activities were under way to enhance progress towards their achievement. 3. The present information note provides an updated and detailed assessment of progress towards Aichi Biodiversity Target 12. Section I introduces the target.
