2 1. Check In & Out

1.1. Receiving Your Chromebook 1.1.1. To receive your Chromebook you will need to complete the following training and submit the following forms: 1.1.1.1. Students must successfully complete two training sessions 1.1.1.1.1. Chromebook 101 - 1 hour 1.1.1.1.2. 101 - 2 hours 1.1.1.2. Bogan Computer Technical High School parents/guardians must attend a Chromebook orientation and sign the Student & Parent Chromebook Agreement 1.1.1.3. Bogan Computer Technical High School students must sign the Bogan Digital Citizen Contract 1.1.1.4. Secure Chromebook Protection Plan. A third party insurance agency has been contacted to provide additional coverage. Open enrollment begins July 22 - September 15 at

The Student is responsible for all damages to the Chromebook, case, and charger. At any point of the school year there is a loss or theft of a Chromebook, it should be reported to the Digital Learning Coordinator

2. Chromebook Care & Repair 2.1. General Info 2.1.1. Students are responsible for the general care of the Chromebook that they have been issued by Bogan Computer Technical High School. Chromebooks that are broken or fail to work properly must be taken to Bogan Computer Technical High School Tech Crew for an evaluation at the ‘Chrome Zone. 2.1.2. Chromebooks should never be taken to an outside computer service for

any type of repairs or maintenance. Initial Here 2.1.3. Refrain from having food, drinks, or pets next to the Chromebook. 2.1.4. Carefully insert cords, cables, and removable storage devices. 2.1.5. Chromebooks must remain free of any writing, drawing, stickers, and labels. 2.1.6. Do not stack books or other heavy objects on top of the Chromebook. 2.1.7. Chromebooks are sensitive to extreme heat and cold, therefore leaving the device in a car may expose it to these potentially harmful conditions. 2.2. Covers 2.2.1. Each Chromebook will be issued with a protective cover. The cover provides sufficient protection to protect the Chromebook from normal wear and tear and provide a suitable means for carrying the device. The Chromebook should remain in the protective cover at ALL times. 2.2.2. Students may decorate their cover, but a fee will be charged at Check In.

Initial Here 2.3. Carrying Chromebooks 2.3.1. Refrain from lifting the Chromebook by the screen. 2.3.2. Refrain from carrying the Chromebook with the screen open. 2.4. Screen Care 2.4.1. The Chromebook screens can be damaged if subjected to rough treatment. The screens are particularly sensitive to damage from excessive pressure on the screen. 2.4.2. Do not put pressure on the top of a Chromebook when it is closed. 2.4.3. Do not store a Chromebook with the screen open. 2.4.4. Do not put anything else in the protective cover with the Chromebook. 2.4.5. Do not close the cover with any objects on the keyboard (e.g. pens, pencils, paper) 2.4.6. ONLY clean the screen with a soft, dry microfiber or anti-static cloth. 2.4.7. Do not “bump” the Chromebook against lockers, walls, car doors, floors, etc., as it may break the screen. 2.5. Asset Tags 2.5.1. All Chromebooks will be labeled with a CPS Asset tag. 2.5.2. Asset Tags may not be modified, removed, or tampered with in any way. 2.5.3. Students will be charged the full replacement cost of a Chromebook

7 ($300) for tampering with a CPS Asset Tag or turning in a Chromebook

After the issue has been diagnosed by the Tech Crew, repairs that are NOT due to misuse or damage will be covered without cost. All other accidental or intentional damage to the Chromebook will incur a cost. 2.6.2. Any technical issues with the Chromebook should be taken to the Chrome Zone for service. 3. Your Chromebook at School

3.1. Chromebooks are being provided for use at school each day. Students are required to bring their Chromebook to school every day and to every class, fully

8 charged. 3.2. Logging into a Chromebook 3.2.1. Use your CPS credentials ( Username & password) to log into your Chromebook. 3.2.2. Never share your passwords with others 3.3. Chromebooks Left at Home 3.3.1. Students arriving to school without their Chromebook may report to the Chrome Zone to check out a loaner for the day. 3.3.2. A student borrowing a loaner must sign a loaner agreement and will be responsible for any damage to or loss of the Chromebook. 3.3.3. A record will be kept of the number of times a loaner has been issued to each student. 3.3.4. Loaners must be returned to the Chrome Zone, by 3:50. Failure to do so

If a student fails to bring their Chromebook to school for two consecutive days they must comply with a mandatory inspection of their Chromebook. 3.3.6. If a student repeatedly leaves their Chromebook at home (three times), they will become a Check Out User. Students will log-in to a computer at the printing station to print, and access their work that is stored in a cloud. 3.7.4. The Chromebook may be set up to print with your personal printer at home. Bogan Computer Technical High School makes no guarantee that their network will be available 100% of the time. In the rare case that the

10 network is down, CPS/Bogan will not be responsible for lost or missing data. 3.8.2. Students will not be penalized if the network is down and a completed assignment can not be accessed for class. 3.9. Storing Your Chromebook 3.9.1. When not in use lock your Chromebook in your locker.

3.9.2. Take your Chromebook home DAILY. Initial Here 3.9.3. Never leave your Chromebook unsupervised (locker room, cafeteria, library, unlocked classroom, hallway, sport dressing rooms) 3.9.4. Chromebooks left in unsupervised areas will be taken to the Chrome Zone and disciplinary actions may be taken. 3.9.5. Be mindful when using public transportation or working in a public place.

4. Managing Your Files

4.1. Managing & Saving Digital Work 4.1.1. Student work will be stored in Google Cloud based application and can be accessed from any computer with internet connectivity and most mobile devices. 4.1.2. The Chromebook comes with 16GB of internal storage space where you may store files. 4.1.3. With Google Drive built in all your files are backed up online, safely and securely. 4.1.4. CPS and Bogan Computer Technical High School are not responsible for the loss of any student work. 4.1.5. Students are encouraged to maintain a backup of their important work on a USB storage device or another internet storage solutions (Digital Drop Box). 4.1.6. Students may be directed by school personnel to remove apps, music, and videos if the storage of instructional materials is compromised. 4.1.7. The Chromebook will NOT be backed up by CPS in cases of resetting or re-imaging. 4.1.8. Chromebook malfunctions are not acceptable excuse for not submitting your work on time.

5. Using Your Chromebook Outside of School

5.1. General - Students are bound by the CPS Acceptable Use Agreement as well as Bogan Digital Citizenship Agreement, and all other guidelines in this document whenever or wherever they use their Chromebooks. 5.2. Internet Access

11 5.2.1. Students may set up their Chromebooks to access their home wireless network. 5.2.2. Students may set up their Chromebooks to access Free WiFi wireless points in public places. 5.2.3. Parents/Guardians may provide content filtering by contacting your wireless internet provider (Comcast, At&T, NetZero, etc...). 5.3. Connecting to WiFi

5.3.1. Click the network icon in the lower-right corner of your screen. 5.3.2. Select your network status from the menu that appears. 5.3.3. Make sure Wi-Fi usage is enabled, which will allow your Chromebook to

detect nearby networks. In the menu that appears, click . If you see

, that means Wi-Fi is already enabled. 5.3.4. Detected networks automatically show up in the menu. To connect to a network, simply select its name.

5.3.5. When you see the icon in the lower-right corner of your screen, that means your Chromebook is connected to the network. 5.4. Printing 5.4.1. Bogan Computer Technical High School is going paperless. When possible documents will be published digitally and shared through Google Drive. 5.4.2. Storing Your Chromebook 5.5.1. Each night charge your Chromebook in a secure location to avoid damage. 5.5.2. When your Chromebook is not in use, it should be stored in a safe location to avoid damage. 5.5.3. When traveling to and from school, do not leave your backpack unsupervised. 5.5.4. Be mindful when working in a public places that provide free Wi-Fi. 5.5.5. Away Sporting Events - Chromebooks will be left here at school locked in your PE locker.

6. Chrome OS - Operating System

6.1. General: The Chromebook comes with the Chrome operating system. No other operating system may be installed other than the version of Chrome OS that is supported and managed by CPS.

12 6.2. Updates 6.2.1. Chrome OS, the operating system, will update itself automatically. 6.2.2. If your Chromebook detects that updates are available while you’re

signed in, this update icon appears in the status area. 6.2.2.1. Click the status area in the lower-right corner, where your account picture appears. 6.2.2.2. Select Restart to update. 6.2.2.3. Your Chromebook will shut down and automatically restart, with the update applied. 6.3. Virus Protection 6.3.1. Chromebooks have multiple layers of security to keep you safe from viruses and malware without needing any additional security software. 6.3.2. There is no need for additional virus protection.

7. Content Filter 7.1. In School 7.1.1. As required by law, Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA), CPS uses filtering technology to screen internet sites for offensive material and prohibit access, to the extent possible, to objectionable, offensive or unsuitable content found on the internet. 7.1.2. In addition to the use of filtering technology, ITS mays also block access to certain websites when required by law, when their use may interfere with the optimal functioning, or when among other things, the website may compromise the security of the CPS Network or Computer Resources. 7.1.3. All Chromebooks will have all internet activity protected and monitored by CPS. 7.1.4. If an educational valuable site is blocked, contact the Digital Learning Coordinator. The DLC will determine the educational value and if deemed appropriate, submit a request to ITS. 7.1.5. All blocking and unblocking decisions will be made by ITS in compliance with applicable laws and the requirements of this policy. 7.2. Out of School

8. Apps and Extensions

8.1. Google Apps for Education

13 8.1.1. Google Apps has all the tools that schools need to be productive, including email, calendar, documents, and more. 8.1.2. Google Apps are free to schools and are built for the web so everyone can work together across any device, anytime. 8.1.3. Your Chromebook seamlessly integrates with the Google Apps for Education suite of productivity and collaboration tools. 8.1.4. All work is stored in the cloud. 8.1.5. Original Apps added by Bogan Computer Technical High School must remain on the Chromebook in usable condition and can easily be accessible at all times. 8.2. Chrome Web Apps & Extensions 8.2.1. Students may add Apps and Extensions to their Chromebook from the . 8.2.2. Students are responsible for the Apps or Extensions added to their Chromebook. 8.2.3. Inappropriate material will be removed and disciplinary actions will be taken. 8.2.4. Apps and Extensions may appear after an update as Apps will be added from time to time for use in a particular class. 8.3. Offline Apps 8.3.1. For times when you aren't connected to the web, there are a variety of tasks you can still do with your Chromebook: 8.3.1.1. Gmail Offline 8.3.1.2. - Read only view 8.3.1.3. Google Drive 8.3.1.4. View Edit Photos 8.3.1.5. Read Offline Web Pages 8.3.1.6. Web Store has more Apps that integrate with Chrome OS and work offline

9. Chromebook Identification

9.1. Records 9.1.1. CPS will maintain an inventory of all Chromebooks that includes the serial number, asset tag, student name, and student ID#. 9.1.2. Students may request a label with their name to place on their Chromebook. 9.2. Users 9.2.1. Students will be assigned the same Chromebook for the duration of his/her time at Bogan Computer Technical High School.

10. Repair or Replace

10.1. Chrome Zone 10.1.1. Chromebooks will be repaired by Smart Technologies. 10.1.2. Outside repair facilities are prohibited as it will void the warranty. Initial Here

10.1.3. Self repairs are prohibited as it will void the warranty. 10.1.4. All Chromebooks in need of a repair must be taken to the ‘Chrome Zone’; During the day students must have a pass from their teacher. Initial Here

10.2. Chromebooks Being Repaired 10.2.1. Loaner Chromebooks will be issued to students whose Chromebooks are undergoing repair. 10.2.2. Loaner Chromebooks may be taken home during the repair period. 10.2.3. A student borrowing a loaner must sign a loaner agreement and will be responsible for any damage to or loss of Loaner Chromebook. 10.2.4. Students will receive an Email from a Tech Crew member when their Chromebook is repaired and available to be picked up. Students will have two days to return the loaner and pick up their school issued Chromebook. 10.2.5. If there is a fee for the repairs, they must be paid at the time of pick up or the fee will be added to your student account. 10.3. Vendor Warranty 10.3.1. The Chromebooks are under a 1 year warranty for the 2014 - 2015 school year. 10.3.2. Protects against normal use, mechanical breakdown, and faulty construction. 10.3.3. Warranty will not cover damage caused by misuse, abuse, or accidents. 10.3.4. Chromebooks sent out for warranty work will be replaced with a loaner until the Chromebook is repaired. 10.4. 11. Expectation of Privacy

11.1. General: Students have no expectation of confidentiality or privacy with respect to any usage of a Chromebook, regardless of whether that use is for district- related or personal purposes, other than as specifically provided by law. CPS may, without prior notice or consent, log, supervise, access, view, monitor, and record use of student Chromebooks at any time for any reason related to the operation of the District. By using a Chromebook, students agree to such access,

12. Acceptable Use Policy & Digital Citizenship

12.1. AUP: CPS has adopted a Student Acceptable Use policy for the CPS Network and Computer Resources. School issued Chromebooks are to be used for educational purposes only. Students are to adhere to the CPS Acceptable Use Policy, Bogan Digital Citizen, and Bogan’s Chromebook 1:1 Policy and Guidelines set forth in this document. 12.2. Bogan Digital Citizen Contract Bogan Computer Technical High School is a district leader in blending technologies into the learning process. Students have the opportunity to engage each other, their teachers and the world each day during class. Our teachers and students continuously use of Chromebooks, iPads, computers and the CPS Network throughout the learning process.

Digital Rights

16 At Bogan Computer Technical High School we work hard to ensure the following digital rights for all our students.

1. Each student shall have access to current, updated, and fully functioning technologies to be used in the learning process 2. Each student shall be given access to his or her CPS username and password at the start of his or her academic career at Bogan Computer Technical High School 3. Each student shall be taught how to access his or her CPS Student Portal and Google@CPS Gmail and Google Drive accounts 4. Each student shall attend classes led by teachers who continuously blend technology into learning and assessment activities 5. Each student shall have spaces in the building that support individual technology use before, during, and after the school day 6. Each student shall be supported as he or she learns how to productively incorporate personal technology into the learning process 7. Each student shall be offered ongoing workshops and educational opportunities to learn how to better blend technology into the learning process 8. Each student shall have the opportunity to use social media on other online collaborative tools in the learning process 9. Each student shall enjoy educational experience that is free from any form of cyber bullying, harassment or threats

Student Code of Conduct Responsibilities

Bogan Computer Technical High School students are expected to fully abide by the policies found in the CPS Student Code of Conduct. It is the responsibility of each student to follow the expectations established by the Board of Education. Inappropriate behaviors while using technology inhibit teaching and learning. CPS has identified the following inappropriate behaviors as those that affect technology.

13. Disciplinary Actions

13.1. All students are expected to use the Chromebook as a school-issued tool to enhance their educational experience and learning. If students choose to misuse

19 their Chromebooks, there will be consequences - the Student Code of Conduct addresses these issues. Additionally, if students continue to violate the Student Code of Conduct, their privileges of maintaining an individual Chromebook can be revoked, and the student will be required to check in and check out their Chromebook for the school day. 13.2. Please refer to the Digital Citizenship guidelines for guidance on student expectations. These guidelines are available in this handbook as well as on our website, BoganHS.org. 13.3. This Chromebook is part of the 1:1 Initiative and is being provided to support the educational programs at Bogan Computer Technical High School and is the property of CPS; it is the property of William J. Bogan High School. All district-owned Chromebooks will be logged onto the CPS Network in school. The District has already set up site restrictions and aggressively monitors web activity - ANY activity completed on a District Chromebook is subject to monitoring even if connected to your home network. Failure to comply with CPS’ discipline policy, Internet Acceptable Use Policy, or the guidelines stated in this document for care and use of the Chromebook will result in the loss of privilege to take the Chromebook home.

If the Chromebook is damaged, lost, or stolen, you are responsible for the cost of repair or replacement value on the date of loss unless you purchase the insurance. You should report damaged, lost, or stolen Chromebooks to the Digital Learning Coordinator (DLC) In the case of loss or theft of the Chromebook you will be required to file a report with the Chicago Police Department. Your failure to return the Chromebook back to school will result in a report being filed with the Chicago Police Department for stolen property. The cost of a lost Chromebook is $300.
