The reason is that I have other aspects of work on Buddhism and have been occupied with them. I recall having read about The Three Planes some ten years ago from a book entitled Stories in Phra Ruang’s Three Planes , by Sathirakoses [2]. I did not pay much attention to it then as I did not think it necessary for understanding the essence of Buddhism. It was after having been invited to give this lecture that I really read the original text for the first time. After accepting the invitation, I realized that I had made a terrible mistake. I was not at all ready to speak on the assigned topic, for it goes beyond the content of The Three Planes to every aspect of Thai society. A person talking on such a topic should be well versed in history. Moreover, the relevant history may be lying hidden in other fields, for instance, art and literature. It seems that various literary works, in particular, should be a useful source of information on the influence we are looking for. * From the lecture on “The Influence of Phra Ruang’s Three Planes on the Morality of Thai Society,” given at the seminar on “ Traibhumi Phra Ruang ,” at Vajiravudhanusorn Building, National Library, on Tuesday, May 1, 1983. To speak from this perspective, I therefore feel a little uneasy. However, to talk on the influence of The Three Planes on the morality of Thai society, we are bound to refer to the content of the treatise, that is, what The Three Planes says about morality. When we fully understand it, we will then be able to figure out how it influences Thai society. As I have just said, to understand the influence of The Three Planes on the morality of Thai society, we must, first of all, know its content on morality. " . 1 Developing Thai Society 3 Structure and summary of The Three Planes The term traibhumi , as we all know, refers to the “three planes of existence.” However, I need to stress at this point that there are in actual fact four planes, but the author wants to deal especially with the three planes which are in the mundane sphere of consciousness. These three planes are major ones and can be divided into thirty-one sub-planes or domains altogether. It is therefore necessary to know how the three major ones are to be divided into thirty-one. In The Three Planes , the author has taken the content of the three planes, which are divided into thirty-one sub-planes, and presented them in eleven episodes or chapters. To put it most briefly, the three planes are as follows: 1. Kāma-bh ūmi [3], or Kāmāvacara-bh ūmi in full, “the Sense Plane,” but it might just as well be simply called Kama-bh ūmi 2. Rūpa-bh ūmi , or Rūpāvacara-bh ūmi , “the Form Plane” 3. Ar ūpa-bh ūmi , or Ar ūpāvacara-bh ūmi , “the Formless Plane” To be technically exhaustive, however, there are four planes and the fourth one is called lokuttara-bh ūmi “the supramundane plane.” The first three share the common characteristic of being a lokiya-bh ūmi “mundane plane.” The author points out the problem of these planes and tells people to mend their ways so that they can get out of them and enter the supramundane instead. He therefore calls his work The Three Planes to indicate the basis of discussion and treats the lokuttara-bh ūmi separately. (The book has eventually covered all the four planes.) The first plane, K āma-bh ūmi or K āmāvacara-bh ūmi, is divided into eleven domains.

By the end of the nineteenth century monks were banned from performing Phra Malai recitations. As a result, former monks who had left the Sangha often delivered the popular performances, dressed up as monks for the occasion, unconstrained by the rules of proper behavior for the real monks.

    PART 1 THE POPULAR TRADITION ll too often a textbook picture of Theravada Buddhism bears little Aresemblance to the actual practice of Buddhism in Southeast Asia. The lived traditions of Myanmar,1 Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Sri Lanka seem to distort and sometimes subvert the cardinal teachings of nibbana, the Four Noble Truths, or the Noble Eightfold Path familiar to the Western student of Buddhism.2 The observer enters a Theravada Buddhist culture to discover that ordination into the monastic order (sangha) may be motivated more by cultural convention or a young man’s sense of social obligation to his parents rather than the pursuit of transforming wisdom; that the peace and quiet sought by a meditating monk may be overwhelmed by the amplified rock music of a temple festival; that somewhat unkempt village temples outnum- ber tidy, well-organized monasteries; and that the Buddha, austerely imaged in the posture of meditation (hVbVY]^) or dispelling Mara’s powerful army (bVgVk^_VnV) is venerated more in the hope of gaining privilege and prestige, material gain, and protection on journeys than in the hope of nibbana. The apparent contradiction between the highest ideals and goals of Theravada Buddhism and the actual lived tradition in Southeast Asia has long perplexed Western scholars. CONNECTIVITY, CONFLICT AND CONUNDRUMS OF THAI STUDIES 15-18 JULY 2017, CHIANG MAI, THAILAND Those Strange-Looking Monks in Phra Malai Manuscript Paintings: Voices of The Text Brereton, Bonnie Pacala Center for Research on Plurality in the Mekong Region Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences Khon Kaen University Thailand -------------------------------------------- Abstract One of the most popular texts written and illustrated on accordion-folded paper manuscripts (samut khoi) is Phra Malai Klon Suat (PMKS), the vernacular version of the story of the magical monk who travelled to hell and heaven. The miniature paintings in these manuscripts depict key scenes from the story as well as pairs of seated monks sometimes with legs crossed and a talabat in their hands, and others in very unusual postures with strange facial expressions. Several Western various scholars have offered interpretations of these monk figures based on a number of factors: art historical analysis of the paintings, the opinions of other Western scholars, and their own guesses and assumptions. This paper offers a different interpretation of the monks – one that draws on the writings of Thai scholars, interviews with monks, personal communications with people who have sponsored recitations for their deceased relatives, and my experiences of listening to the text being chanted. In addition, other factors include the historical context of the klon suat genre, specific features of the text, the text’s function and usage, and the role of the monks and lay chanters. Certain visions experienced by advanced meditators are, it is claimed, instances of avijñapti-rūpa, and this view on the nature of these visions is presented as contrasting with the position of at least some other doctrinal schools. It is undeniable that avijñapti-rūpa plays several important roles within the overarching framework of the Sarvāstivādin doctrinal system. We may wonder, however, whether the role of avijñapti-rūpa in meditation was something that had any particular significance within Sarvāstivādin-influenced meditative traditions themselves. As a step towards answering this question, in this paper I will explore a number of 5th-century meditation treatises preserved in Chinese that are either translations of texts associated with the Sarvāstivādin-influenced yogācāra meditators of North-west India, or which are Chinese developments of the practices associated with these groups.     Social Science Asia, Volume 3 Number 4, p : 111‐120 Envisioning the Buddhist Cosmos through Paintings: The Traiphum in Central Thailand and Phra Malai in Isan Dr. Bonnie Pacala Brereton Lecturer, College of Local Administration, Khon Kaen University, Thailand Researcher, Research Group on Local Affairs Administration Abstract Thai Buddhists derive their understanding of the Buddhist cosmos from images they see in paintings and/or hear described in recitations or sermons based primarily on one of two texts: the Phra Malai Sutta and the Traiphum (Three Worlds). Both texts are non-canonical and both exist in multiple versions or “tellings” (Ramanujan: 1991). The former is a narrative about the arahat-monk, Phra Malai, and his visits to hell and heaven, while the latter is an encyclopedic collection of treatises that describes in great detail the various realms of the Buddhist universe and the beings inhabiting them. This article examines visual depictions of Phra Malai and the Traiphum, each a selected “telling,” in strikingly different socio-historical and cultural contexts: Phra Malai in early 20th century Isan village scrolls and murals the Traiphum in post-Ayutthaya murals in and near Bangkok. It will demonstrate the impact on visual conceptions of the Buddhist cosmos by the social, political and historic circumstances in which they were created.     1 The Vessantara Jātaka as a Performative Text The 9HVVDQWDUD -ăWDND in Thailand is quintessentially a performative text. The story’s historical popularity and its impact on Thai political culture and social organization derive from the fact that the story was, from very early times, designed to be communicated in oral form in the vernacular to an audience. Were it not for the fact that the 9HVVDQWDUD -ăWDND was disseminated in this way the story would QHYHU KDYH DFKLHYHG WKH SRSXODULW\ RU LQÁXHQFH LW KDV DQG ZRXOG most likely have remained a little-known subject of erudite monastic scholarship. Thet Maha Chat literally means “recitation of the Great Life.” The “Great Life” refers to the life of Prince Vessantara, the penulti- mate incarnation (chat, from the Pali MăWL) of the ERGKLVDWWD before his rebirth as the Buddha. Thet (or thetsana) can be translated variously as “recitation,” “sermon,” “preaching,” or more fully, “exposition of the dhamma,” that is, the religious doctrine contained in the Buddha’s teachings. In trying to account for the 9HVVDQWDUD-ăWDND·V popularity most scholarship tends to examine the story itself, separate from the medium by which the story was communicated. If we are to under- stand the way the story was received by audiences in premodern times it is essential to look at the story’s meaning in the context of the Thet Maha Chat, the ceremonial recitation through which the story became known to people. The performance of this ceremony imparted to the 9HVVDQWDUD -ăWDND an aura of sanctity and authority that is entirely missing in, for example, modern paperback editions 23 © 2016 State University of New York Press, Albany 24 Thailand’s Theory of Monarchy of the story, which contribute to the common interpretation of the 9HVVDQWDUD-ăWDND today as a kind of folktale.
