In the early 20th century husbands migrated, leaving wives behind. As economies of the United States and Canada have become more service-oriented, wives migrate leaving husbands behind. The experiences of Jamaican immigrant women are documented in Caribbean migration studies, but the marriages of Jamaican legally-married immigrant wives and their husbands left behind in Jamaica are so far unstudied. The main research question of this study is what maintains these transnational marriages over time, sometimes for decades, when spouses see each other sometimes only once or twice a year. Data for the study come from: in-depth interviews conducted between 2005 and 2007; conversations held over the past fifteen years with participants in these marriages in the United States and in Jamaica; and participant observation of U.S. and Jamaican societies. The findings reveal that daily companionship in marriage is not as essential a Jamaican cultural value as migration, but that the institution of marriage, although not the dominant form of coupling in Jamaica, is important enough to last. Moreover, divorce still bears a stigma in Jamaican culture. Outcomes of these marriages vary but may not be unpredictable, depending on their pre-migration state and the nature of the living-apart experience. By focusing on these Jamaican transnational marriages, this study hopes to cast another light on Jamaican migration, as well as to encourage further discussion and research of legal marriage in Jamaica and in the Afro-Caribbean. iv ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Gratitude is here expressed first to God, who planted the idea and saw it through. The place too impersonal” –A left-Behind Husband describes the United States “She like America – me no bother pay it no mind” –Another left-Behind Husband describes his Wife Introduction This study explores the migration phenomenon in which Jamaican legally-married1 couples live transnationally–wives in the United States, husbands in Jamaica–sometimes for as long as twenty or thirty years without either party seeking a divorce. Either the wife emigrates alone because her husband is unable, or unwilling, to obtain an immigrant visa to accompany her or to join her later; or both spouses emigrate together but the husband soon returns home to Jamaica. The quotations that preface this chapter show the divergence of opinions some Jamaican wives and husbands hold regarding life in the United States: one wife respondent reported that her husband did not even procure a passport, he “didn’t even try.” Jamaican couples report that they jointly decide for the wife to emigrate for the economic improvement of the family. This is not unusual, since Afro-Caribbean2 women are socialized, and culturally expected, to contribute to the maintenance of their families (Senior 1991; D’Amico 1993; Momsen 1993; Safa 1995; Smith 1996). Brothers Current research on intimate relationships of older adults in the U.S. is predominantly focused on marriage. Furthermore, gender relations in later life relationships have historically been studied within long-term marital relationships, which show patterns of high gender conformance earlier in family life, especially with young children, and less so later in life. Demographic and socio- cultural changes are transforming the ways in which people partner across the life course, including later life. Women’s increasing education and workforce participation has helped alter family and household composition, giving rise to different partnership forms including cohabitation, divorce, remarriage, and living apart together (LAT), an intimate relationship in which the couple maintains separate residences. Very little is known about this type of relationship in the U.S. Using a life course framework I examine how gender is manifested in the formation and maintenance of LAT relationships in later life using social constructivism and the theory of gender as social structure. A grounded theory qualitative study with 13 women and 7 men age 59 to 89 reveals patterns of “doing” gender as well as “doing” family earlier in life.

INTERMARRIED COUPLES 2 Abstract Despite an increase in interracial or mixed marriages (intermarriages) globally, the experiences of couples in such marriages are generally under-researched, particularly within psychology. Using a cultural psychological framework and qualitative methods, this paper studies the psychosocial experiences of couples in intermarriages. It focuses on four South Asians in ethnically intermarriages in two settings: two Indian-origin men married to native Danish women in Denmark, and two Indian-origin women married to Euro-American men in Canada. Data from in-depth interviews were subjected to a thematic analysis yielding an array of themes, of which this paper presents the two most dominant themes across the two contexts: ‘transnationalism’ and ‘racialized experiences in social situations’.

    Hoyoung “Jodie” Moon Reed College Marrying into South Korea: Female Marriage Migrants and Gendered Modes of National Belonging In recent South Korean public discourses on the growth of diversity within the country, the female marriage migrant emerges as a key figure. Remarkably, one out of ten marriages in South Korea today are transnational; in three quarters of these marriages, the foreign spouse is a woman (MoGEF 2012:19).1 Introducing national, cultural, and often ethnic/racial others into the intimate spheres of Korean society, the increasing commonality of such conjugal unions has prompted citizens' reevaluation of longstanding nationalist fantasies of a homogeneous nation-state. Nevertheless, the influx of foreign women marrying into South Korea requires an account more complex than the narrative of globalization leading to a cosmopolitan nation. State-generated media representations of exemplary foreign wives tout them as contributors to a more “multicultural” Korea but invariably portray them as having “become Korean”; the state’s continued focus on the family as the basic unit for its “multicultural” policies discloses its interests in the reproduction of the patriarchal family. Providing a glimpse into the array of government media depictions of and policies addressing the growing population of marriage migrant women, I argue that the “multicultural family” rhetoric and policies of the South Korean state impose well-worn modes of female national belonging: they are premised upon the imperative of turning foreign women into Korean wives, daughters-in-law, and most importantly, mothers of Korean children. Hence, marriage migrant women come to occupy a complex position in a structure of stratified reproduction (Ginsburg and Rapp 1995:3) in South Korea.

    5 Transnational Marriage Migration and the East Asian Family-Based Welfare Model: Social Reproduction in Vietnam, Taiwan, and South Korea Duong Bach Le1, Thanh-Dam Truong2, and Thu Hong Khuat3 Abstract Since the late 1990s there has been a rising trend of Vietnamese women migrating to neighbouring countries (Taiwan, South Korea, Singapore, and China) for marriage. Previous studies of such cross-border marriages have emphasized either issues of choice and agency for women, or their poverty and victimhood. This chapter anal- yses this trend along the lines of the debate on the East Asian model of welfare and family policy, with case studies in Taiwan and South Korea. It views commercially arranged transnational marriages (CATM) as an institution that connects changing gendered regimes of social reproduction at the sending and receiving ends. Mediated by a combination of asymmetrical relations – gender, class, age, ethnicity, and national belonging— this institution operates in a transnational space through which material and symbolic resources are circulated. These in turn construct subjectivities and identities for participating actors. There is a dimension of trans-mas- culinity embodied in the practices of CATM and this requires further exploration regarding informed consent and the rights of its users. Beyond this, CATM should be further analysed in the context of changing family welfare and intergenerational care as gendered regimes, and such an analysis should also address how house- holds adapt and devise new strategies to sustain and reproduce themselves economically, socially, and culturally. Such an understanding can help open the research agenda on social policy and rights and provide a regional perspective.

Blair Richard Gebhardt ii © 2008 Ann-Gee Lee All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Sue Carter Wood, Advisor Nüshu is a Chinese women's script believed to have been invented and used before the Cultural Revolution. For about a couple centuries, Nüshu was used by uneducated rural women in Jiangyong County, Hunan Province, in China to communicate and correspond with one another, cope with their hardships, and promote creativity. Its complexity lies in the fact that it may come in different forms: written on paper fans or silk-bound books; embroidered on clothing and accessories; or sung while a woman or group of women were doing their domestic work. Although Nüshu is an old and somewhat secret female language which has been used for over 100 years, it has only been an academic field of study for about 25 years. Further, in the field of rhetoric and composition, despite the enormous interest in women's rhetorics and material culture, sources on Nüshu in relation to the two fields are scarce. In relation to Nüshu, through examinations of American domestic arts, such as quilts, scrapbooking, and so on, material rhetoric is slowly becoming a significant field of study. Elaine Hedges explains, “Recent research has focused on ‘ordinary women' whose household work comprised, defined, and often circumscribed their lives: the work of cooking, cleaning, and sewing that women traditionally and perpetually performed and has gone unheralded until now” (294).
