A general geometric construction of coordinates in a convex simplicial polytope ∗ Tao Ju a, Peter Liepa b Joe Warren c aWashington University, St. Louis, USA bAutodesk, Toronto, Canada cRice University, Houston, USA Abstract Barycentric coordinates are a fundamental concept in computer graphics and ge- ometric modeling. We extend the geometric construction of Floater’s mean value coordinates [8,11] to a general form that is capable of constructing a family of coor- dinates in a convex 2D polygon, 3D triangular polyhedron, or a higher-dimensional simplicial polytope. This family unifies previously known coordinates, including Wachspress coordinates, mean value coordinates and discrete harmonic coordinates, in a simple geometric framework. Using the construction, we are able to create a new set of coordinates in 3D and higher dimensions and study its relation with known coordinates. We show that our general construction is complete, that is, the resulting family includes all possible coordinates in any convex simplicial polytope. Math. 42 (2005), 243–256 THE ORIENTABILITY OF SMALL COVERS AND COLORING SIMPLE POLYTOPES HISASHI NAKAYAMA and YASUZO NISHIMURA (Received September 1, 2003) Abstract Small Cover is an -dimensional manifold endowed with a Z2 action whose or- bit space is a simple convex polytope . It is known that a small cover over is characterized by a coloring of which satisfies a certain condition. In this paper we shall investigate the topology of small covers by the coloring theory in com- binatorics. We shall first give an orientability condition for a small cover. In case = 3, an orientable small cover corresponds to a four colored polytope. The four color theorem implies the existence of orientable small cover over every simple con- vex 3-polytope. Moreover we shall show the existence of non-orientable small cover over every simple convex 3-polytope, except the 3-simplex. 0. Introduction “Small Cover” was introduced and studied by Davis and Januszkiewicz in [5]. It is a real version of “Quasitoric manifold,” i.e., an -dimensional manifold endowed with an action of the group Z2 whose orbit space is an -dimensional simple convex poly- tope. A typical example is provided by the natural action of Z2 on the real projec- tive space R whose orbit space is an -simplex. Let be an -dimensional simple convex polytope. Here is simple if the number of codimension-one faces (which are called “facets”) meeting at each vertex is , equivalently, the dual of its boundary complex ( ) is an ( 1)-dimensional simplicial sphere. -

Wilson We provide an efficient, uniform means to attach flag varieties, and coordinate rings of flag varieties, to numerous noncommutative settings. Introduction The central theme of this paper is the following result: any three-point genus zero Gromov-Witten invariant on a Grassmannian X is equal to a classical intersec- tion number on a homogeneous space Y of the same Lie type. We prove this when X is a type A Grassmannian, and, in types B, C,andD,whenX is the Lagrangian or orthogonal Grassmannian parametrizing maximal isotropic subspaces in a com- plex vector space equipped with a non-degenerate skew-symmetric or symmetric form. The space Y depends on X and the degree of the Gromov-Witten invariant considered. For a type A Grassmannian, Y is a two-step flag variety, and in the other cases, Y is a sub-maximal isotropic Grassmannian. Our key identity for Gromov-Witten invariants is based on an explicit bijection between the set of rational maps counted by a Gromov-Witten invariant and the set of points in the intersection of three Schubert varieties in the homogeneous space Y . The proof of this result uses no moduli spaces of maps and requires only basic algebraic geometry. It was observed in [Bu1] that the intersection and linear span of the subspaces corresponding to points on a curve in a Grassmannian, called the kernel and span of the curve, have dimensions which are bounded below and above, respectively. -

The group of symmetries of a regular m-gon in the plane, that is the convex hull in the complex plane of the mth roots of unity, is the dihedral group of order 2m, which is the simplest example of a reflection Dm group. -

We introduce a method to construct binary polyhedral groups as a subset of quaternions H via spin map of SO(3). In addition, we show that the binary icosahedral group in H is the set of vertices of a 600-cell by applying the Coxeter–Dynkin diagram of H4. Introduction The classification of finite subgroups in SLn(C) derives attention from various research areas in mathematics. Especially when n = 2, it is related to McKay correspondence and ADE singularity theory [1]. The list of finite subgroups of SL2(C) consists of cyclic groups (Zn), binary dihedral groups corresponded to the symmetry group of regular 2n-gons, and binary polyhedral groups related to regular polyhedra. These are related to the classification of regular polyhedrons known as Platonic solids. There are five platonic solids (tetrahedron, cubic, octahedron, dodecahedron, icosahedron), but, as a regular polyhedron and its dual polyhedron are associated with the same symmetry groups, there are only three binary polyhedral groups(binary tetrahedral group 2T, binary octahedral group 2O, binary icosahedral group 2I) related to regular polyhedrons. -
Computing Invariants of Hyperbolic Coxeter Groups

Guglielmetti Abstract CoxIter is a computer program designed to compute invariants of hyperbolic Coxeter groups. Given such a group, the program determines whether it is cocompact or of finite covolume, whether it is arithmetic in the non-cocompact case, and whether it provides the Euler characteristic and the combinatorial structure of the associated fundamental polyhedron. The aim of this paper is to present the theoretical background for the program. Introduction Let Hn be the hyperbolic n-space, and let Isom Hn be the group of isometries of Hn. For a given discrete hyperbolic Coxeter group Γ < Isom Hn and its associated fundamental polyhedron P ⊂ Hn, we are interested in geometrical and combinatorial properties of P . We want to know whether P is compact, has finite volume and, if the answer is yes, what its volume is. We also want to find the combinatorial structure of P , namely, the number of vertices, edges, 2-faces, and so on. Finally, it is interesting to find out whether Γ is arithmetic, that is, if Γ is commensurable to the reflection group of the automorphism group of a quadratic form of signature (n; 1). Most of these questions can be answered by studying finite and affine subgroups of Γ, but this involves a huge number of computations. -
Petrie Schemes

Petrie polygons, especially as they arise in the study of regular polytopes and Coxeter groups, have been studied by geometers and group theorists since the early part of the twentieth century. An open question is the determination of which polyhedra possess Petrie polygons that are simple closed curves. The current work explores combinatorial structures in abstract polytopes, called Petrie schemes, that generalize the notion of a Petrie polygon. It is established that all of the regular convex polytopes and honeycombs in Euclidean spaces, as well as all of the Grunbaum–Dress¨ polyhedra, pos- sess Petrie schemes that are not self-intersecting and thus have Petrie polygons that are simple closed curves. Partial results are obtained for several other classes of less symmetric polytopes. 1 Introduction Historically, polyhedra have been conceived of either as closed surfaces (usually topo- logical spheres) made up of planar polygons joined edge to edge or as solids enclosed by such a surface. In recent times, mathematicians have considered polyhedra to be convex polytopes, simplicial spheres, or combinatorial structures such as abstract polytopes or incidence complexes. A Petrie polygon of a polyhedron is a sequence of edges of the polyhedron where any two consecutive elements of the sequence have a vertex and face in common, but no three consecutive edges share a commonface. For the regular polyhedra, the Petrie polygons form the equatorial skew polygons. Petrie polygons may be defined analogously for polytopes as well. Petrie polygons have been very useful in the study of polyhedra and polytopes, especially regular polytopes. -

Branes and Polytopes Luca Romano email address: [email protected] ABSTRACT We investigate the hierarchies of half-supersymmetric branes in maximal supergravity theories. By studying the action of the Weyl group of the U-duality group of maximal supergravities we discover a set of universal algebraic rules describing the number of independent 1/2-BPS p-branes, rank by rank, in any dimension. We show that these relations describe the symmetries of certain families of uniform polytopes. This induces a correspondence between half-supersymmetric branes and vertices of opportune uniform polytopes. We show that half-supersymmetric 0-, 1- and 2-branes are in correspondence with the vertices of the k21, 2k1 and 1k2 families of uniform polytopes, respectively, while 3-branes correspond to the vertices of the rectified version of the 2k1 family. For 4-branes and higher rank solutions we find a general behavior. The interpretation of half- supersymmetric solutions as vertices of uniform polytopes reveals some intriguing aspects. The paper describes a method for generating combinatorial com- plexes of polyhedral type. Building blocks B are implanted into the maximal simplices of a simplicial complex C, on which a group operates as a combinato- rial reflection group. Of particular interest is the case where B is a polyhedral block and C the barycentric subdivision of a regular incidence-polytope K together with the action of the automorphism group of K. 1. Introduction. In this paper we discuss a method for generating certain types of combinatorial complexes. We generalize ideas which were recently applied in [23] for the construction of tilings of the Euclidean 3-space E3 by dodecahedra. The 120-cell {5,3,3} in the Euclidean 4-space E4 is a regular convex polytope whose facets and vertex-figures are dodecahedra and 3-simplices, respectively (cf. Coxeter [6], Fejes Toth [12]). When the 120-cell is centrally projected from some vertex onto the 3-simplex T spanned by the neighboured vertices, then a dissection of T into dodecahedra arises (an example of a central projection is shown in Figure 1). This dissection can be used as a building block for a tiling of E3 by dodecahedra. In fact, in the barycentric subdivision of the regular tessellation {4,3,4} of E3 by cubes each 3-simplex can serve as as a fundamental region for the symmetry group W of {4,3,4} (cf. Coxeter [6]). Therefore, mapping T affinely onto any of these 3-simplices and applying all symmetries in W turns the dissection of T into a tiling T of the whole space E3.
