There are two sides to this investigation: first, the determination of the integrability conditions that ensure the existence of a local parallel metric in the neighbourhood of a given point and second, the characterization of the topological obstruction to a globally defined parallel metric. The local problem has been previously solved by means of constructing a derived flag. Herein we continue the inquiry to the global aspect, which is formulated in terms of the cohomology of the constant sheaf of sections in the general linear group. 1. Introduction A connection on a manifold is a type of differentiation that acts on vector fields, differential forms and tensor products of these objects. Its importance lies in the fact that given a piecewise continuous curve connecting two points on the manifold, the connection defines a linear isomorphism between the respective tangent spaces at these points. Another fundamental concept in the study of differential geometry is that of a metric, which provides a measure of distance on the manifold. It is well known that a metric uniquely determines a Levi-Civita connection: a symmetric connection for which the metric is parallel. Not all connections are derived from a metric and so it is natural to ask, for a symmetric connection, if there exists a parallel metric, that is, whether the connection is a Levi-Civita connection. More generally, a connection on a manifold M, symmetric or not, is said to be metric if there exists a parallel metric defined on M.

    APPENDIX A TENSORS AND DIFFERENTIAL FORMS ON VECTOR SPACES Since only so much of the vast and growing field of differential forms and differentiable manifolds will be actually used in this survey, we shall attempt to briefly review how the calculus of exterior differential forms on vector spaces can serve as a replacement for the more conventional vector calculus and then introduce only the most elementary notions regarding more topologically general differentiable manifolds, which will mostly be used as the basis for the discussion of Lie groups, in the following appendix. Since exterior differential forms are special kinds of tensor fields – namely, completely-antisymmetric covariant ones – and tensors are important to physics, in their own right, we shall first review the basic notions concerning tensors and multilinear algebra. Presumably, the reader is familiar with linear algebra as it is usually taught to physicists, but for the “basis-free” approach to linear and multilinear algebra (which we shall not always adhere to fanatically), it would also help to have some familiarity with the more “abstract-algebraic” approach to linear algebra, such as one might learn from Hoffman and Kunze [ 1], for instance. 1. Tensor algebra. – A tensor algebra is a type of algebra in which multiplication takes the form of the tensor product. a. Tensor product. – Although the tensor product of vector spaces can be given a rigorous definition in a more abstract-algebraic context (See Greub [ 2], for instance), for the purposes of actual calculations with tensors and tensor fields, it is usually sufficient to say that if V and W are vector spaces of dimensions n and m, respectively, then the tensor product V ⊗ W will be a vector space of dimension nm whose elements are finite linear combinations of elements of the form v ⊗ w, where v is a vector in V and w is a vector in W.

We outline Einstein’s Equations which describes the geometry of spacetime due to the influence of mass, and from there derive the Schwarzschild metric. The metric relies on the curvature of spacetime to provide a means of measuring invariant spacetime intervals around an isolated, static, and spherically symmetric mass M, which could represent a star or a black hole.     A GEOMETRIC TRAPPING APPROACH TO GLOBAL REGULARITY FOR 2D NAVIER-STOKES ON MANIFOLDS AYNUR BULUT AND KHANG MANH HUYNH Abstract. In this paper, we use frequency decomposition techniques to give a direct proof of global existence and regularity for the Navier-Stokes equations on two-dimensional Riemannian manifolds without boundary. Our techniques are inspired by an approach of Mattingly and Sinai [15] which was developed in the context of periodic boundary conditions on a flat background, and which is based on a maximum principle for Fourier coefficients. The extension to general manifolds requires several new ideas, connected to the less favorable spectral localization properties in our setting. Our argu- ments make use of frequency projection operators, multilinear estimates that originated in the study of the non-linear Schr¨odingerequation, and ideas from microlocal analysis. 1.     Geometrical tools for embedding fields, submanifolds, and foliations Antony J. Speranza∗ Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics, 31 Caroline St. N, Waterloo, ON N2L 2Y5, Canada Abstract Embedding fields provide a way of coupling a background structure to a theory while preserving diffeomorphism-invariance. Examples of such background structures include embedded submani- folds, such as branes; boundaries of local subregions, such as the Ryu-Takayanagi surface in holog- raphy; and foliations, which appear in fluid dynamics and force-free electrodynamics. This work presents a systematic framework for computing geometric properties of these background structures in the embedding field description. An overview of the local geometric quantities associated with a foliation is given, including a review of the Gauss, Codazzi, and Ricci-Voss equations, which relate the geometry of the foliation to the ambient curvature. Generalizations of these equations for cur- vature in the nonintegrable normal directions are derived. Particular care is given to the question of which objects are well-defined for single submanifolds, and which depend on the structure of the foliation away from a submanifold. Variational formulas are provided for the geometric quantities, which involve contributions both from the variation of the embedding map as well as variations of the ambient metric. As an application of these variational formulas, a derivation is given of the Jacobi equation, describing perturbations of extremal area surfaces of arbitrary codimension. The embedding field formalism is also applied to the problem of classifying boundary conditions for general relativity in a finite subregion that lead to integrable Hamiltonians.     Classical Physics: Spacetime and Fields Nikodem Poplawski Department of Mathematics and Physics, University of New Haven, CT, USA Preface We present a self-contained introduction to the classical theory of spacetime and fields. This expo- sition is based on the most general principles: the principle of general covariance (relativity) and the principle of least action. The order of the exposition is: 1. Spacetime (principle of general covariance and tensors, affine connection, curvature, metric, tetrad and spin connection, Lorentz group, spinors); 2. Fields (principle of least action, action for gravitational field, matter, symmetries and conservation laws, gravitational field equations, spinor fields, electromagnetic field, action for particles). In this order, a particle is a special case of a field existing in spacetime, and classical mechanics can be derived from field theory.
