Juhl Independent researcher, 1-4-1 Rokko Heights, 906 Shinkawa, Chuo-ku, Tokyo 104-0033, Japan ABSTRACT We use the occurrence of unusual or out-of-season dust storms and dissolved ion data as proxies for dust to propose a calendar-year chronology for a portion of the Greenland Ice Sheet Project 2 (GISP2) ice core during the early sixth century A.D. Our new time scale moves a small sulfate peak to early 537 A.D., which is more con- sistent with recent fi ndings of a 6 mo to 18 mo time lag between volcanic eruptions and atmospheric fallout of their sulfate aerosols. Our new time scale is consistent with a small volcanic input to the A.D. 536–537 climate downturn. We use the time range of Ni-rich fragments and cosmic spherules to provide an independent test of the chronology. The time range of Ni-rich fragments and cosmic spherules matches historical observations of “dancing stars” starting in the summer of A.D. 533 and lasting until A.D. 539 or 540. These dancing stars have been previously attributed to cosmogenic dust loading of Earth’s atmosphere. The time scale cannot be shifted to be either younger or older by 1 yr without destroying the match to historical accounts of dancing stars. -

Professor Fang won his doctorate in Beijing Normal University in 1990, and he continued his studies of comparative literature and comparative civilizations, having published 34 books. As he wrote in the epilogue, he had been working on the book, A Study of Comparative Civilizations, since he was still reading for his doctor’s degree and finally completed it when he was invited to be a full-time research fellow in Peking University. -

Thanks to the work of scholars like Ellen Widmer, Dorothy Ko, Susan Mann and Kang-i Sun Chang, to mention only a few, reference to a woman in China’s imperial past conjures up the image of a strong and sophisticated woman holding a book rather than a picture of the bound foot.1 No student of China’s late imperial period (roughly between 1500 and 1900) could justifiably claim unfamiliarity with the Chinese woman writer. -
The Imperial Tomb Tablet of the Great Ming
The Imperial Tomb Tablet of the Great Ming 大明皇陵之碑 With translation into English, annotations and commentary by Laurie Dennis October 2017 The town of Fengyang 凤阳, to the north of Anhui Province in the heart of China, may seem at first glance to be an ordinary, and rather unremarkable, provincial outpost. But carefully preserved in a park southwest of the town lies a key site for the Ming Dynasty, which ruled the Middle Kingdom from 1368 until 1644. Fengyang is where the eventual dynastic founder lost most of his family to the plague demons. This founder, Zhu Yuanzhang 朱元璋, was a grieving and impoverished peasant youth when he buried his parents and brother and nephew on a remote hillside near the town that he later expanded, renamed, and tried (unsuccessfully) to make his dynastic capital. Though Zhu had to leave his home to survive in the aftermath of the burial, he was a filial son, and regretted not being able to tend his family graves. Soon after becoming emperor, he transformed his family’s unmarked plots into a grand imperial cemetery for the House of Zhu, flanked by imposing statues (see the photo above, taken in 2006). He ordered that a stone tablet be placed before the graves, and carved with the words he wanted his descendants to read and ponder for generation after generation. The focus of this monograph is my translation of this remarkable text. The stele inscribed with the words of Zhu Yuanzhang, known as the Imperial Tomb Tablet of the Great Ming 大明皇陵之碑, or the Huangling Bei, stands over 7 meters high and is borne on the back of a stone turtle. -

Tourism is the demand for people's needs to develop to an advanced stage. With the continuous improvement of the living standards of our people, the contradiction between the demand for tourism experience and the lack of tourism infrastructure has become increasingly prominent. Smart tourism has effectively alleviated this contradiction as a means of integrating information resources to improve the quality and level of tourism services. Based on the positive role of smart tourism in promoting the development of China's tourism industry, this paper analyzes Huangshan tourism as an example, and hopes to provide suggestions and reflections on the improvement of China's tourism public service system. KEYWORDS: Smart tourism, Public service system, Huangshan 1. Introduction With the development of tourism industry, the needs of Chinese people for tourism public services are more intense. Improving the public information tourism service mechanism can promote the further development of China's tourism industry. From the current tourism industry, there are some problems in the development of tourism public information services, which restricts the development prospects of tourism public information services, and the birth of smart tourism has made up for the shortage of tourism public services in China. Tourism public services can greatly satisfy the tourist needs of tourists and effectively promote the development of tourism in China. -

Nostalgia and Resistance: Gender and the Poetry of Chen Yinke Wai-yee Li 李惠儀 Harvard University On June 2, 1927, the great scholar and poet Wang Guowei 王國維 (1877- 1927) drowned himself at Lake Kunming in the Imperial Summer Palace in Beijing. There was widespread perception at the time that Wang had committed suicide as a martyr for the fallen Qing dynasty, whose young deposed emperor had been Wang’s student. However, Chen Yinke 陳寅恪 (1890-1969), Wang’s friend and colleague at the Qinghua Research Institute of National Learning, offered a different interpretation in the preface to his “Elegy on Wang Guowei” 王觀堂先生輓詞并序: For today’s China is facing calamities and crises without precedents in its several thousand years of history. With these calamities and crises reaching ever more dire extremes, how can those whose very being represents a condensation and realization of the spirit of Chinese culture fail to identify with its fate and perish along with it? This was why Wang Guowei could not but die.1 Two years later, Chen elaborated upon the meaning of Wang’s death in a memorial stele: He died to make manifest his will to independence and freedom. This was neither about personal indebtedness and grudges, nor about the rise or fall of one ruling house… His writings may sink into oblivion; his teachings may yet be debated. But this spirit of independence and freedom of thought…will last for eternity with heaven and earth.2 Between these assertions from 1927 and 1929 is a rhetorical elision of potentially different positions.
