James Stewart, Lee Remick, Ben Gazzara, George C. Scott, Eve Arden. Directed by Otto Preminger. Unusual courtroom story as Stewart plays a country lawyer defending a soldier who killed a man who allegedly raped his wife. Scott, in his film debut, is the big-city lawyer helping the prosecution. Thursday, June 3-The Americanization of Emily (1964)-comedy/satire, 117 min. James Garner, Julie Andrews, Melvyn Douglas, James Coburn. Script by Paddy Chayefsky. In the days before D-Day, an admiral’s adjutant is assigned to lead a film crew to photograph the 1st sailor on Omaha Beach. Garner and Andrews have both cited this film as the favorite of their careers. Thursday, June 10-Bad Day at Black Rock (1955)-mystery, 81 min. Spencer Tracey, Robert Ryan, Anne Francis, Walter Brennan, Lee Marvin. Directed by John Sturges. After WWII, a one-armed former soldier travels to the desert town of Black Rock and runs into a dangerous mystery. Dynamite cast also includes Ernest Borgnine, Dean Jagger in classic suspenser. Black Soldiers in Liberal Hollywood
Katherine Kinney Cold Wars: Black Soldiers in Liberal Hollywood n 1982 Louis Gossett, Jr was awarded the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Gunnery Sergeant Foley in An Officer and a Gentleman, becoming theI first African American actor to win an Oscar since Sidney Poitier. In 1989, Denzel Washington became the second to win, again in a supporting role, for Glory. It is perhaps more than coincidental that both award winning roles were soldiers. At once assimilationist and militant, the black soldier apparently escapes the Hollywood history Donald Bogle has named, “Coons, Toms, Bucks, and Mammies” or the more recent litany of cops and criminals. From the liberal consensus of WWII, to the ideological ruptures of Vietnam, and the reconstruction of the image of the military in the Reagan-Bush era, the black soldier has assumed an increasingly prominent role, ironically maintaining Hollywood’s liberal credentials and its preeminence in producing a national mythos. This largely static evolution can be traced from landmark films of WWII and post-War liberal Hollywood: Bataan (1943) and Home of the Brave (1949), through the career of actor James Edwards in the 1950’s, and to the more politically contested Vietnam War films of the 1980’s. Since WWII, the black soldier has held a crucial, but little noted, position in the battles over Hollywood representations of African American men.1 The soldier’s role is conspicuous in the way it places African American men explicitly within a nationalist and a nationaliz- ing context: U.S. history and Hollywood’s narrative of assimilation, the combat film.

Even if its members look back and suffer anxious regret at their choice of How Green Was My Valley , that doesn ' t mean they were wrong. They can ' t be wrong . It ' s not everyone else ' s opinion that matters, but the Academy ' s. Mulling over the movies of 1941, the Acade my rejected Citizen Kane . Perhaps they resented Orson Welles ' s arrogant ways and unprecedented creative power. Maybe they thought the film too experimental. Maybe the vote was split between Citizen Kane and The Maltese Falcon , both pioneering in their F ilm Noir flavor. Or they may not have seen the film at all since it was granted such limited release as a result of newspaper baron William Randolph Hearst ' s threats to RKO. Nobody knows, and it doesn ' t matter. Academy members can ' t be forced to vote for the film they like best. Their biases and political calculations can ' t be dissected. To subject the Academy to such scrutiny would be impossible and unfair. It ' s the Academy ' s awards, not ours.

I’m a Sicilian American Dedicated to my parents Gaetano and Rosa Alessi Coniglio and my eldest brother Guy , who came to America in 1913 and 1914 from Serradifalco, SICILY . I’m a Sicilian American. I’m a Sicilian American. I’m the son of immigrants who left a land of history and beauty, of poets and dreamers, volcanoes and olive trees. A land that taught the world what a modern nation could be, before most modern nations existed. A land that formed the largest country, The Kingdom of the Two Sicilies , from Naples and Abruzzo to Messina and Palermo, that was subsumed into the new ‘Kingdom of Italy’ after the ‘unification’. My parents left because for all its lore and loveliness, and their fierce pride in it, Sicily was poor and demeaned, and could offer little hope for their family’s future. I’m a Sicilian American. My heritage includes mythical Persephone, Vulcan, and Icarus; Greek scholars Archimedes, Empedocles and Diodorus Siculus; composers Bellini and Scarlatti, and writers Verga and Sciascia. I’m a Sicilian American. I’m Antonio Crisafi. I came before there was a United States and in 1696 commanded the fort at Onondaga. I’m Padre Saverio Saetta, who died in 1695 while bringing Christianity to the New World.
